I’d argue for a 4th broad category of Taylor song, which is a fantasy. Like a head-canon, a personal fantasy, and Wildest Dreams is the textbook example. I don’t think it’s about heartbreak, but instead it’s a relationship that never existed. Maybe inspired by a real crush? I think so. You can feel real, intense feelings from a fantasy or daydream inside your own head (I just recently learned about limerance, which maybe we all have/do to some degree), so the feelings in these songs can be real but the story they tell is imagined/fictional. On Speak Now, we get Mine and Speak Now, and maybe Haunted(?), as songs that are imagined relationships/stories grown from a seed of something IRL that doesn’t actually resemble the story in the song. I think probably a majority of her early work fits this fantasy bucket anyway, but in later albums it’s harder to tell. I don’t think there’s one on Rep… only one on Lover is DBATC, but that’s a big MAYBE, because she claims it’s inspired by an existing work of fiction, which I include in this fantasy idea, but it could have easily been about a real goodbye in her life and there’s no story besides “heartbreak”. Folklore songs feel different, too many feel like songs initially about her real life that have been changed later to fit her characters line. Maybe Illicit Affairs. But on Evermore there seem to be several that feel more like they were originally written about fantasies or imagined scenarios/relationships from her headcanon. Maybe choosing to go with the “characters” in folklore inspired her to do several more based on other works of fiction for evermore, or on fantasies about other people she had had (‘tis the damn season: fantasizing about hooking up with your ex while you’re both in town, too relatable 😂).

Really enjoyed this video - thank you! I was fascinated by your comment that Taylor’s agreement with Max Martin might mean some Jack produced songs didn’t make it on the first album. Would never have thought of it but it makes sense, since she did gush with pride over the vault tracks in her announcement. She clearly thinks they can stand right along with the original songs. I’m interested in Is It Over Now and think it will be a sister song to Are We Out of the Woods. I relate strongly to OOTW, which reminds me of my feelings of confusion and disorientation as my first marriage took a left turn and started a fast downward trajectory. I remember the disbelief and unwillingness to believe it was over, so surreal, and am hoping IION reflects some of that. But I’m most intrigued by Suburban Legends. It could be good. I mean, it’s not the first song of hers with a HUH? title. I remember thinking WTF is Getaway Car about, are we Bonnie and Clyde now?!

I LOVE the way you divided up the record in categories! I've never thought about 1989 that way, but it makes so much sense. For me I feel like new romantics is more of a meta song. That song has always for me been about dating culture at that time at large. "Please leave me stranded. it's so romantic," and lyrics like "every day is a battle but every night with us is like a dream" and also "we need love but all we want is danger". I feel like this touched upon the badboy ideal, the toxic romance notions and what its like dating as a teenage girl in her early twenties.

I have a theory about the Tangerine edition: I initially thought that the 6th song which was called a 'bonus track' not a 'vault track' would either be a feature like 'Bad Blood' with Kendrick Lamar, or even who knows 'This Is What You Came For' Taylor's version (even though I think it'd belong on Rep, and would makes more sense in terms of timelines). But now I think it could actually be an entirely new track. In one of the puzzles, the hint was 'Track 6' and the answer was 'Floor Eighteen'. Track 6 on 1989 is 'Shake It Off' and there are no 'floor' or 'eighteen' references in the song, nor is there in bad blood or tiwycf. I am now thinking that we might actually get a 6th vault track named 'Floor Eighteen'.

I think "floor eighteen" is a reference to when she made an easter egg video for 1989. The original album was *announced* on August 18th -- the same day she had a Yahoo live stream where she released Shake it Off and played the video. Anyway, in the lead up to that, she posted a video to her Instagram in which she pressed the 18th floor elevator button 6 times! It was an easter egg for the announcement on the 18th, as well as the release of the first single (track six).

In my perfect world we would get a feat Harry Styles for Style, the remix of Bad Blood (but maybe also feat Katy Perry) and I think a Selena collab in the future would be cool too. All of these feats would be in addition to the tracks. Like extras tacked on at the end of the album.

Imo, for the whole collab thing, i would personally LOVE style ft. harry styles (taylor's version) BUT it would NEED to have style tv without him in addition to, so the one with harry would be more from the vault.
