1989: Washington Redskins vs Dallas Cowboys Remastered NFL Highlights

The Redskins shook off the funk of two heart-breaking home divisional loses to start the ’89 season, rebounding for their first win with this smothering 30-7 victory over Jimmie Johnson and the start-from-scratch Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins defense nabbed four interceptions, shutting down - and out - the Cowboys offense led by rookie Troy Aikman (say, whatever happened to that guy…?). So inept was the Dallas offense on this day that forays past midfield were rare and, were it not for a 77-yard fumble return off Mark Rypien in the first quarter, a goose egg for Dallas was all but certain.
Meanwhile, Rypien and the Redskins offense was efficient if not spectacular, opting for a back-to-basics approach that focused on ball control over big plays - Washington held the ball for almost 40 minutes, outgaining Dallas 165 yards to 34 on the ground, and held the Cowboys offense to Zero (with a capital Z) scoring opportunities (not even a meager field goal attempt). Art Monk had a banner day with 6 catches for 114 yards while diminutive running back Jamie Morris notched a rare memorable showing with 100 yards on 26 carries in place of fumble-fingers Gerald Riggs (we forgive you, Gerald).
The victory was the third straight for Washington in Dallas, part of a 6-3 run for Gibbs and company in Big D from ‘83 to ‘91. Don’t see that anymore, do we?… Sigh.
This was a rare Redskins-Cowboys match-up during the Gibbs 1.0 era not covered by Madden/Summerall or Monday Night Football. So instead, it's our old friend Dick Stockton, accompanied by the serviceable Dan Fouts, on the call from Texas Stadium.
