For those fans out there that DID NOT get to see this era of cowboy football, and you did not experience it in real time, the only word I could use to describe this era is MACHINE. this team from the Oline to the backs and receivers to the QB, they all worked in unison like a machine.. if you didn't witness it, then you really don't know.. they were THAT good..

It is crazy that Novacek wasn't remembered by everyone as I remembered him. I love that you made this video. The Cowboys were never as dominate after they lost him because he converted too many 3rd downs that extended drives, that lead to TDs, that over the course of a season added up to multiple game wins. No one ever made those up. One of the very best things in this video, is that it has so many great plays that aren't on highlight reels that really punctuate how dominate The Cowboys were during this period.

Novachek was also a really good run blocker for being so skinny. I was always astounded how well he could use his leverage to seal off DE's and LB's with his gangly self. He didn't get a lot of pancake blocks, but still managed to always get in the way of larger defenders

Remember so many games during this era, when the score at halftime would be 3 to 4 points, seemingly a close game. Cowboys get ball in second half, go down and score, then force a 3 and out, and go right back down and score again. What was a close game at halftime, was suddenly a 3 score lead midway through the third. Gawds, it was beautiful.

This was Ernie Zampese second season as OC, he took over play calling for a SB team and got more out of a less talented team. Harper was gone to Tampa and they just plugged in Dion and Williams and never missed a beat. Seeing him in the booth with a cigarette in one hand and five pencils in the other always gave me confidence. If he were still here he would probably tell you this was his best work because he finally had all the tools he needed, that team was an OC's dream.

Jay Novacek and Doug Cosbie were guys that made big plays that weren't always touchdowns. I can't keep count of the number of times I saw those guys make a big catch that got a first down. A crucial first down that continued a drive that ended up with a touchdown.

What's most amazing about this team is they were able to win a Super Bowl without a head coach. If Jones could have worked things out with Jimmy they probably would have won five in a row. Switzer had the title of head coach and that is about all you can say for him.

I knew as a sixth grader in 96 that we were in trouble when Novacek retired because of his back after the Super Bowl. He could get those underneath passes and beat any linebacker to the ball. I knew that with Irvin suspended for the first part of the season that Kevin Williams was never a number two receiver. It would have been Jimmy Smith if he had not been cut medically after having his appendix rupture before the 1993 season. Jimmy Smith would have won that 3rd receiver spot, but Kevin Williams couldn't produce as reciever and was off the team after that year in 96 in free agency. It's a crime that Novacek has never been considered in the hall of fame discussion. Got pro bowls from 91 to 95 and 3 Super Bowl rings and 2 Super Bowl touchdowns. This guy produced when it came playoff time.

That ‘95 team was great, that said I’ve always felt that with Alvin Harper’s departure in free agency the offense just wasn’t near as explosive as it had been in prior seasons. No matter how hard they tried, Dallas just couldn’t replace his deep threat, potential to score from anywhere, ability until it was too late. He just really gave a different dynamic and some juice to the offense. He’d be quiet all game, and then BOOM!, he’d catch a 40 yard TD from Aikman and break the back of a defense. One other note, that block by Emmitt Smith at 6:43, that’s a microcosm of why the Cowboys were so dominant during that era. I remember Emmitt doing that on a regular basis during his career. His blocking was simply incredible. Which is all the more remarkable when you consider that Emmitt wasn’t the biggest guy and was probably giving up 50 lbs and 4 or 5 inches on blitzing linebackers. When your perennial All-Pro RB is laying it on line like that, that’s what you call team football. One last comment. To me Novacek is a prime example of how many times in order to have a successful NFL career you really have to be in the right situation. Before he came to Dallas he was just a guy for the Cardinals. For Dallas, in that offense, with that coaching, with Aikman throwing him the ball, he was an All-Pro. Makes you wonder sometimes, how many other guys could’ve had more success with their NFL careers if they’d been in the right place?
@thelogicalcowboy
@thelogicalcowboy Ай бұрын
I agree. They weren't as explosive without Harper. They were still the same in efficiency. But as you said that deep threat left with Harper. I thought Williams could have been that guy. People forget he ran one of the fastest 40 times ever. I guess his speed didn't transfer on to the field.

Hey Logical Cowboy (LC for short), I am in tears remembering this magical season. Thank you for the trip back in time to when the Cowboys were the feared and respected team they were in the 95 season. The offense was certainly still unstoppable. Novacek was truly the the 4th, the quadruplet of the offense, and I could say Moose was the 5th, but he was mainly a solid blocker. I still have VCR tapes of the games from this season, and was able to record them. It was also the year we got a 3rd Superbowl victory in a 4 year span, a first at the time. As HOF worthy as the offense was, the defense from that whole era of the 90's is one of the key ingredients for that success as well. I guess you could call it Doomsday III. I would like to see a video from you with the stats and accomplishments of their defense from that era. Haley, Lett, Tolbert, Maryland, Edwards, Smith, Myles, Woodson, Brown, Bates, Marion. Right along with the success of the Offense, was the dominance of the Defense. Maybe not so much as the years past of Randy White, Too Tall, and Harvey Martin of Doomsday II, or Lilly, Pugh, Howley, Jordan, Green, Harris and Renfro from Doomsday I, but they were dominant in their own right as it had to be to make a Championship. I love all these names. I can see all their faces. I have watched many of these games. I am so happy that I can reach back in history and pull up actual video of the games I watched so many years ago. Technology is wonderful in that aspect. Keep the content coming LC, I'll watch it. Thank you for bringing the glory days back to mind.

One major correction. We did not secure home field advantage that season. The 49er's had home field, but they lost in the divisional round to the packers. That was a huge relief to us fans. We hadn't beaten the 49er's in the last 3 attempts up to that point, even with Dieon.

What's going on bro? Thanks for watching! 🙏 But if I can humbly correct you. In 95 Dallas had the best record in the NFC conference 12-4. The 49ers were 11-5. The 49ers ended up losing their last game to the Falcons on Christmas Eve. Dallas had to beat The Cardinals on Christmas day to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. If you want further confirmation here's what Wikipedia says... "Running back Emmitt Smith earned his fourth NFL rushing title and set a then-record 25 rushing touchdowns in a season against the Arizona Cardinals to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs." Again thanks for watching!

I’d forgotten just how similar Novacek and Doug Cosbie were. They even wore the same number. Cosbie had seasons better than Jay. Too bad he was one of the many injured in 1988. Mike Sherrard had a great rookie season after Dallas drafted him in the first round in 1986. Too bad he broke his leg 3 years in a row. He and Irvin would have been a GREAT combo. Others to miss time in 1988. Irvin, Tuinei, Ken Norton, Kelvin Edwards, Jeff Zimmerman, Timmy Newsome, Danny White, Victor Scott, Vince Albritton, and Bob White.

Question to the fans: Do any of you miss old Texas Stadium? I know the old stadium was a dump, but Jerry World is a shopping mall, movie theater, sports bar and art gallery where games are played. There are no ghosts of football past living at AT&T. Thoughts?

I've commented on the 1995 Dallas Cowboys before and my opinion is still that if they don't sign Deion Sanders to not only join the team but to take him away from the Winers more importantly. But if he's not signed my Cowboys don't win, partake or even reach the Super Bowl. I'm not a Sanders promoter at all but he gave them not only his defensive abilities but adds another weapon as a wide receiver. They were a fragile shell of that 1992 team that was picked apart over three years I've learned that had Jimmy stayed the plan was to move on from Haley, save money for Norton, and the other defensive players who slipped away. Johnson felt that Haley's presence wasn't warranted anymore since they adopted through Charles.

Another fantastic video, LC. Y'know, I'm an old-time Sooner fan, so I admittedly have a soft spot for Switzer. I just think he gets a lot more hate than he deserves among Cowboys fans because he was the next man up after Jimmy left. You don't win 3 national championships by being a bad head coach. BTW, I'm still waiting for that all-time 53-man roster vid! 😉

My Favorite part of the 95 season was how they got their ass’s kicked in the Super Bowl but because of a 4th string WR who ran the same route wrong…not once but twice…handed them the only Super Bowl ever won by a team that didn’t have the leading receiver, rusher, or passer. The Big 3 got thumped… Luckiest win in Super Bowl history.
@thelogicalcowboy
@thelogicalcowboy 29 күн бұрын
What are you crying about? You didn't watch the game. Or you don't remember. Dallas lead the entire game even before the interceptions. Aikman had a way better game than O'Donnell. Yes, he had more yards but that was because the Steelers couldn't run due to them trailing for the entire game, and two O'Donnell almost 50 attempts. To Aikman's 23 attempts. Aikman had a better completion% Passing rate and QBR. In fact, if it wasn't for those interceptions he would have easily won MVP. Irvin had fewer yards than Hastings but that was because again less opportunities. They passed the ball an extreme amount of time compared to Dallas. Also, keep in mind after Larry Brown's interceptions the Steeler's defense still had the chance to keep Dallas out of the endzone but couldn't. So it wasn't handed to them on a platter as you hopelessly claim.
@GNXXRAY
@GNXXRAY 29 күн бұрын
@@thelogicalcowboy well since you don’t even know the QB’s name…I’ll not be too harsh. The Steelers Defense completely SHUT DOWN Dallas from the second Qtr on. Morris out rushed Emmitt no matter how you see it. The Steelers moved the ball way better and when they made the score 20-17… They were driving to win. Dallas was given two short fields from turnovers….PERIOD. They were not capable of driving the field against that Defense and went 3 and out more times in that game then they had all season. Like I said….without the turnovers…they would have gotten smacked and it was a 4th string WR that ran the route wrong twice that killed it. You act like Emmitt and Michael didn’t want anymore yards. Fact is…they couldn’t get any. I remember the game very clearly and even Paul McGuire said…this isn’t gonna be a blow out guys. Dallas cannot move the ball nor put points on the board against that D. Shit, even Dallas’ first touchdown was a pick play that the refs missed against Jerry O. Of they throw a flag on that play…they kick another FG instead of getting a TD.
@thelogicalcowboy
@thelogicalcowboy 29 күн бұрын
@GNXXRAY You said "The Steelers Defense completely SHUT DOWN Dallas from the second Qtr on." Stop exaggerating. They did not *shut down* Dallas's offense after the second quarter. Dallas had 5 drives for the entire second half. One was at the end when they were wasting time away. On 2 drives they scored 14 points and punted for the other 2. So the Steeler's Defense only made Dallas punt twice in the second half. They scored about the same amount of points in the second half than the first half lol. You said "Morris outrushed Emmitt no matter how you see it. " Stop moving the goalpost. I never said I "saw" anything with Emmitt. I didn't even bring him up in my post. My argument was between Aikman and O'Donnell. Again Aikman had a way better game than O'Donnell. You said The Steelers moved the ball *WAY* better... How? They never led once in the Super Bowl. Dallas at one point was winning 13-0 before the interceptions. Dallas scored on their first 3 possessions. The Steelers scored once in their first 4 possessions. Dallas had 9 meaningful drives throughout the entire game. They scored on five of their possessions. The Steelers had the same amount of drives and scored on 3 possessions. You said and when they made the score 20-17… They were driving to win. Again, stop exaggerating. That was not the winning drive. Lol. It was 4 minutes left on the clock. There were three more possessions after that interception. Dallas had 2 more possessions including the one after the TO. Pittsburgh also had a possession that gave them another chance of coming back but they failed to drive the field. You said Dallas was given two short fields from turnovers….PERIOD. But that's after they were up 13-0 and scored on 3 of their first possessions. Lol. You're acting like the Steelers Defense dominated lol. You said They were not capable of driving the field against that Defense and went 3 and out more times in that game than they had all season. Yet they scored on 5 of their 9 meaningful drives. That's 55.5% of their meaningful drives. 55.5%!!! Is high! To the Steelers 33.3%!!! Stop it, bro! Now was this the Cowboy's best performance? No. But the game wasn’t like you were implying. Dallas most likely still win without the turnovers.
