How BIG were these Redskin/Bear games? Well....Pat Summerall and John Madden called them 5 straight seasons from 1987-1991.

This was the game that Mike Ditka said the Bears stink, and that they wouldn't win again. He was right

This game was a turn around for both of these teams. The Bears entered at 6-5 and despite a disapointing record hadn't played too terrible. 4 of those 5 losses were by less than a touchdown. The Redskins meanwhile came into this game in a horrible midseason slump. They got blown out in L.A. against the Raiders and then lost to the winless Cowboys at home and over the past 3 games they had scored a grand total of 23 points and were sitting at 5-6. As hard as it is to believe now, there was actually rumors going around that Jack Kent Cooke planned to fire Joe Gibbs if the Redskins lost this game against the Bears. Bears Coach Mike Ditka went into RFK thinking his Bears would get a much needed win given how bad the Redskins had looked the last month. Well they got a pretty rude awakening on this day and in the post season game interview Ditka said his team stunk and they wouldn't win another game. He was right and the Bears didn't win another game while the Redskins wouldn't lose another game though they wound up still missing the playoffs due to how good the NFC was that year.

The 1989 Bears are a forgotten and somewhat overlooked single season collapse. From 4-0 to 6-10 and their vaunted defense fell off a cliff

You gotta hand it to the guy though, not much of a quarterback, but definitely scrappy. He went right after Manley in 88th and Davis in this game after they did him pretty dirty.

@1:26:25 Ditka erupts on Landry over the play calling. Ditka calls the next play, which of course flops, too. Ditka was the right guy at the right time to lead the 85 Bears. After that the approach of “you’re nothing-prove to me you’re something, got really old with players and he lost them. Not sure whjat it did to coaches but Ed Hughes was moved out of his role this season when mcMahon was sent to SD, and I think he retired after the season. Maybe I have a poor memory, but I don’t recall Ditka staffing the coaches with any really young, really ambitious, and really smart assistants?

Maybe not But Vince Tobin was em effective very respectable defensive coach/ coordinator during Ditka's tenure

When you think of many teams, you think first of a quarterback, like the Vikings and Tarkenton, the Eagles and McNabb, packers and Starr and Favre. The Bears have never really had a quarterback like that in modern times. That’s as much of a reason for their inconsistency in the standings as anything.

It is crazy to think that Joe Gibbs won two Super Bowls with mediocre QB's like Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.

Do you want to talk about underrated? How about Jeff Bostic? I never see that guy miss a block or an assignment, and he was the center through all the glory years. He never seems to get any recognition for being as good as he was.

Agreed, very underrated. Although he did struggle in 2 key losses. Vs Reggie Kinlaw in SB 18 and vs Jim Burt in an NFC Championship game following the 1986 season. But Rock solid most of the time

It just goes to show you how balanced the NFL used to be. One of the dominant teams with a few key injuries falls to mediocrity. This Redskins team and Green Bay both went 10-6 and misses the playoffs. The very next season they extended the playoff format to 6 teams from 5.
