The Oakland A's were my team I followed because of their former AAA affiliate and my hometown Tacoma Tigers as a teenager in the 1980's!!! Oakland was a well oiled machine with the Bash Brothers of Canseco and McGwire, Terry Steinbach, Walt Weiss and a great pitching staff. Thanks for this video on KZbin!!!

This game to me marked the end point of what I would consider to be the real "golden age" of televised network baseball. 1989 of course, was the final year that both ABC and NBC got to cover baseball before the contract moved over to CBS for the next four years. It began with the epic sixth game of the 1975 World Series (that marked the moment in which you could safely argue when TV really started to "understand" baseball) and Carlton Fisk's iconic home run. It really came of age in 1983 for NBC when they poached Vin Scully from CBS and made him the #1 baseball announcer (forming a team with Joe Garagiola and in 1989, Tom Seaver) and teamed Bob Costas up with Tony Kubek to be the #2 team. For ABC, it was in 1985, when they dropped Howard Cosell for good and promoted Tim McCarver to the "A-team" with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer for that year's World Series.

@@mattosullivan9687 This was also the very last time that ABC would get to broadcast a clinching game in the World Series. They of course would again cover the World Series in 1995. But they only covered Games 1, 4-5 while NBC covered the others. Had there been a seventh game in 1995, then ABC would've covered it. But as it stands, Game 5 of the 1995 World Series marks the last time that ABC broadcast a Major League Baseball game. And with the way that ABC Sports has been downsized by Disney and ESPN in the past decade and a half, ABC may never, ever come close to obtaining a proper baseball TV contract again (or at least, in my lifetime).
@bernieudo43992 жыл бұрын
@@TMC1982Part2 Disney went with the numbers & trend towards the NBA. Who can blame them? Games took longer & that's the kiss of death. People just switch channels if they're bored. ABC didn't want to miss that. It's sad. MNB was just as big as MNF in the '70s & '80s.
@guyincognito3202 жыл бұрын
The 75 Series is the first one that looks modern and interesting on TV. Before that televised baseball was complete garbage, both technically and aesthetically. They had way too much of the tight back angle where you can't see the ball's trajectory off the bat or judge the pitch's path to the plate. I've noticed that they took decades to get rid of that angle, and now you almost never see it. Growing up I always hated when a guy would hit a home run while the telecast was stuck on that tight back angle. Before the mid 70s there was also no human interest at all, no close ups, no cameras pointed at fans. After the Fisk home run they showed you the slow mo of him gesturing the ball fair. It wasn't a special game or series except for the apparent breakthrough in TV aesthetics. Add the fact that in the old days before cable and no interleague play, you never saw many other teams play. They existed only in box scores. So it's hard to understand how baseball captivated America.

This warning to everybody who is a sports fan...Enjoy your teams championships when they happen! You never know when or if it will come again... This is the last time any of my teams have won a professional championship in any sport. Being a Northern California sports fan for me has been a nightmare for many many years... This is the last time any of my teams have won a championship of any kind. My teams...Oakland A's, Raiders, San Jose Sharks and Sacramento Kings have not won a thing since 1989...Including all four sports, my teams have 109 consecutive seasons without winning a championship...that's 1 year longer than the Chicago Cubs endured. I've seen my teams lose possible championships on weird hops, tuck rules, Derek Jeter being at the wrong place at the right time, and Jeremy Giambi not sliding; rigged officating in game 6 of the 2002 WCF, blowing 3-0 series leads to the eventual NHL Champion, trading away the head coach only to lose to him in the Superbowl; Chris Webber shredding his knee; and losing in the American League Division Series in game 5 at home four out of five times. The last time one my teams won a championship, I was 25 years old. Now I'm 54. Still haven't seen another one. Enjoy any championships while you can! They sometimes don't come again, unless you are a New England Patriots fan. One last team I like. The Cal Bears. They have never won any championship in Football or Basketball in my lifetime.

- This is actually Game 4( you probably figured that out by now ;) )where the A's complete the sweep. The Giants, as good a team they had with Will The Thrill, NL MVP Kevin Mitchell, Matt Williams, Brett Butler, were NO match for the powerhouse A's. Some say the Blue Jays, whom the A's beat in the ALCS, were a better opponent for the A's & that series was much closer than the World Series vs San Fran. But the A's were simply baseball's best at that time. Fortunately for the Blue Jays, they atoned for their loss in the '89 ALCS by beating the A's three years later in 1992.... :)
@TMC1982Part27 жыл бұрын
I sometimes wonder how things would've turned out for the Giants had the earthquake not happened. The earthquake layoff allowed the A's to send back eventual Series MVP Dave Stewart again in Game 3 (Bob Welch was supposed to start for Oakland on October 17). I do feel that in a way, the earthquake pretty much delayed the inevitable. The 1989 World Series has to be one the most lopsided ones ever. I just think that the A's were so laser focused and determined to redeem their loss to the Dodgers (despite being the best team in all of baseball during the regular year and pretty much steamrolling the Red Sox in the ALCS), that the Giants were pretty much, just a minor obstacle. Not to mention of course, that in '88, the A's didn't have Rickey Henderson in their proverbial back-pockets.

The announcers defended the pitcher saying 2 inside pitches the second dangerously at Cansecos head they and the fans got all over canseco saying no way was he throwing at his head and vilified Canseco is bull sh#t. It could have done serious damage maybe ending his career or even worse. Everyone always put the A's down. The fans in Oakland was cheered for both teams not in Frisco though. In tired of the negativity towards Oakland. They did everything first including the first 4 World champions. And 3 came in 5th 6th and 7th years they were there. I think that it's a fair argument to suggest that the 1989 World Series was the absolute worst World Series of all time. Or at least the worst since expansion started in 1961. Ignoring the earthquake, statistically speaking, the A's outscored the Giants 32-14. During that series, the Giants never held a lead during the four games. And only once did they even manage to tie the score, when it was 1-1 in the third inning of Game 2. Simply put, the Giants got their asses handed to them in quite possibly, the most lopsided World Series ever.
@kramalerav Жыл бұрын
The Loma Prieto Earthquake is all this Series will be remembered for. As far as the action on the field, yeah it was a lame Fall Classic-although this Game 4 was rather watchable. I was fourteen years old, and while I’d have to look back and read over the season’s recap, it seems to me the National League overall was pretty weak that year. There was nobody on that Giants pitching staff that scared anyone, so it’s no surprise they walked into a buzzsaw with that loaded A’s roster. When I think of Just-Happy-Be-There teams playing in a championship, these ‘89 San Francisco Giants and the 2007 Colorado Rockies are what pops in my mind.
@TMC1982Part2 Жыл бұрын
@@kramalerav I suppose that you can also argue that the two San Diego Padres teams that went to the World Series (1984 and 1998) also fit into the description of "Just-Happy-To-Be-There" teams. A lot of it likely has to do with the feeling that it was all but foregone conclusions that they had little to no shot at beating the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees respectively, who both far and a way, had the best overall records in baseball for those years. At least in my lifetime, the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies may also fit that "Just-Happy-To-Be-There" team. They were a team that really nobody expected to be any good, given that they lost 92 games the year before and they hadn't finished with a winning record since 1986. But in '93, they some how, manage to win 97 games and against all odds, beat a very good Atlanta Braves team (who won 104 games that year and were the two time defending National League champions) in the NLCS. And had certain things turned out differently in Games 4 and 6, who knows how the World Series could've turned out against Toronto.
