1990 Ambush (Concealment Specialist) G.I. Joe review

This is a review of the GI Joe Concealment Specialist, Ambush. First available in 1990 and re-released in 1991 by Hasbro. In 1993, riding the "dinosaur" bandwagon started by Jurassic Park, a second version of Ambush (with orange highlights) was released. This was a Toys R Us exclusive box set called Dino-Hunters and also came with a Low-Light (with neon highlights) and a green Desert Fox vehicle. Although his accessories are very fragile, making an original figure hard to find complete, there is an alternative. In 2000 (for The Real American Hero Collection series) the Ambush mold was used for a new character: Side Track. While the figure and accessories are in a different color, it is an easy way to pick up the fragile pieces.

In Europe and more specifically in Greece where I come from this figure included the helmet, the backpack, a rifle and a sping action missile launcher (with a red missile). Also many other figures from the 90's series had their original accessories replaced by rocket launcers. I wish I could have the chance to own the original one with the tent and the bodyfabric.

Thanks for reminding me of these variations! In 1991 the US/Canada releases started to come with spring-loaded missiles or rubberband-powered launchers and became trendy. Since the UK and European series were 1-2 years behind, they inserted those features into 1990 figures. I think the 1990 figures (released in 1991 or 1992 in UK/Europe) were initially released without the change, but they would be rare.

Interesting figure . I'd never seen this figure till now . I had some 90's JOEs , but my collecting had started to dwindle by then . The Range Viper was an early 90's favorite of mine .

Of course he doesn't stand out. He's a concealment specialist, lol. I got lucky and found 2 of these, complete and at a cheap price. This review was informative, thank you!

He reminds me a lot of Captain Price from his appearance in the first Modern Warfare game. During the Pripyat missions, he and his mentor were in Ghillie Suits. So either the guys at Call of Duty just liked this figure a lot, or its coincidence. (I vote on the later option.)

You know, Ambush and Captain Price look a LOT a like. Makes you wonder if one of the Call of Duty creators were inspired by Ambush.

Hi Kevin, Thank you very much for your always prompt replies. Regarding the videos you uploaded both in KZbin and Blip TV, all the Blip TV versions had ending action scenes which, as you well know, are the most of the viewers' favorite moment of you already great reviews. Since, sadly, Blip TV was closed, all those ending action scenes of a big bunch of figures, very unfortunately, disappeared on-line, haven't they? I am sure many viewers would love to have the possibility to enjoy them again. Do you plan to released them again? Thank you.

I'm pretty sure the place where you put the sticks, one of those broke off the backpack pretty early when I got him back in 1990. I always liked the figure more than his weapons though. Seemed too large or something to me.

Just looking at the rifle and looks like it could be also the EM-2 (a precursor to the SA-80 (just to be helpful .. )

He looks like Lemmy (the lead singer of Motorhead) but with shorter hair. LOL. Anyway, he's one of the better figures released during the early 90's. I like Ambush. I also like the DIC series. Not as good as the original cartoon, but the DIC series had some good episodes. I collected the original G.I Joe line from 1984 till the end (1994). Most of it was great. The only things I didn't like were Cobra-La and 80% of the Star Brigade figures that came out during 1993 and especially the horrid 1994 Star Brigade figures (especially the three, horrible ALIEN mercenary figures they released. Who the hell thought that was a good idea??). Granted, I liked the 1994 Star Brigade Cobra Commander, but ONLY because you got to see more of his face underneath the removable helmet, otherwise the costume looked really crappy. I'm glad 1994 was the final year for the original line because in 1995, they were planning on releasing the G.I Joe REPLICATORS. Long story short, ALIENS would have taken over the bodies of G.I Joe and Cobra and figures like Duke and Cobra Commander and others would have had ALIENS coming out of their chests as the symbiotic aliens controlled the bodies of their hosts. Seriously, they were planning this (Google G.I joe Replicators). Luckily the line ended before that happened and they never released the G.I Joe Replicators. I could only imagine the arguements Larry Hama would have had with Hasbro if the Replicators thing would had become reality and they wanted it in the comic. LOL.

hey kevin have you heard about the rumors of Hasbro doing the gi joe in six inch scale? like the black star wars wars figures. I hope this is true, because I would love to see the original figures in six inch scale. I try and watch your videos on blip, but they only play for about 5 in a half minutes then stop, would you know why?

I hope Hasbro does GI Joes in 6-inch scale too. I think that would be more popular (and cheaper) than Gentle Giant doing re-casts in 12-inch scale. Have you tried switching the quality setting on the Blip videos? I've heard of viewers not being able to start videos, but I've never heard of a video running then stopping later. It couldn't be a problem with ads since they're only at the start of the video. I'll report it to the Blip support and see if they have any tips.

SEASON 2 MUCH BETTER DUKE, SNAKE EYES VERSION 4, DESTRO AND COBRA COMMANDER'S MODIFIED VERSION ONE UNIFORMS. AND CESSPOOL LOVE THAT CHARECTER. WHO WAS CESSPOOLS MINIONS? HIS ARMY?
