I'm a squrebody nerd and LOVE this truck! FYI this generation of GM truck is commonly referred to as the "squarebody" by truck nerds. This is one CLEAN K5. I could do w/out the sunroofs or the exhaust tips, and the 4WD def needs to work, but other than that his thing is SWEEEEEET. My dad had a 78 K5 when I was a little kid, and that thing was a tank. It was also a rotted out PO at that time (thanks New England!) but I remember him offroading it or crashing through huge snow piles. I always wanted one. Came close when I was in high school, I bought a beater 73K10 and fixed it up. Wish I had kept it :( They were a dime a dozen when I was in high school (90's kid), it wasn't till later the value started shooting up. I think they're worth the money though, as these trucks will literally last longer than their owners, providing one can keep the body rot at bay. As far as the transmissions, he doesn't specify if these are pro rebuilds, or junkyard transmissions. If they're from the JY, they can be picked up for a few hundred bucks. If they're pro rebuilds, he needs a new tranny guy. These don't have steering racks; the steering box turns a pitman arm which acts on a drag link which turns the drivers wheel, and the passenger wheel is connected to the driver's wheel via a long tie rod. If the ball joints in that long tie rod get worn, the wheels start to move in slightly different directions and the damn thing can be nearly uncontrollable. It happened to my K10. Crossover steering is a very popular mod on these. The rear axle is 1.5" narrower per side than the front. My truck came with wider wheels on the rear to even it out. Some mud truck guys used to say the different tracks were helpful in the mud, as the rear tires followed in slightly narrower ruts and got more "bite". I dunno, to me it looks goofy. Swap in a 3/4 or 1ton rear axle from the same generation van, the rear axle is wider than the pickups and will match the front track. To see a NASTY K5, check out BJ Balwin's. Though, there's not much K5 left other than the body and a section of the original chassis.

This review really hit home. I've got an '88 with 200,000 miles. It's on its second engine and transmission because the original owners weren't kind to it. I used to daily it, but that wore out it's welcome pretty quick. This truck is a lot more fun offroad than on. Case in point; mine is bone stock, and I've taken it through the woods as the crow flies, crawling over fallen trees (so long as they weren't too big) like they were nothing as I followed lifted XJ Cherokees. Came close to busting the transfer case open a few times, but it was incredible fun and the only reason I keep it around. I spend more time working on the damn thing than driving it. When I do drive it, I get hounded by what I like to call "Squarebody Bros." I get questions and comments from them like this; "Are ya gonna restore it?" "You shouldn't be driving it in the winter, you're ruining a classic." "How much you want for it?" "Don't turn it into a mud rig, you're ruining a classic." It's the Squarebody Bros that tell me I'm ruining my K5 that get to me and is another reason why I don't daily it anymore. I might just turn it into a dedicated mud rig though, much to their dismay.

An '89 model hit my '85 Escort, from a standing stop, while I was passing in front of it at a two-way stop, on the left rear quarter-panel, spun the car about 200 degrees, the right rear wheel rim hit the concrete curb, popped it over that after chipping the concrete and bending the rim, leaving the car almost completely off the street. I was amazed then, and now, that the car didn't flip. Did absolutely nothing to the K5's bumper. I still remember that guy's name, and I've hated Blazers ever since.

Mine was originally bought and used to tow a fifth wheel. For the first 14, come to find out, the dealership hadn't actually connected up the heavy duty cooler that was installed so they were all warranty repairs within the first 50k miles. Then the 15th was my doing after I bought it at 65k, did the transmission service with the wrong filter and blew it up on a long highway pull.
@Lazarus70005 жыл бұрын
This generation of Chevy trucks is, without question, my favorite. Coincidentally it's also the precise cross-section of the availability of luxury features like power windows/locks/seats, air con with the last bastion of traditional features like butterfly windows, manual transmission availability even in the utility bodies (allegedly foreign markets and fleet sales could defy this) fully metal construction, etc. A 1970s platform updated to the 1990s. The pickups had already taken the newer, modernized form by the late 80s, but the Blazer, Suburban, and Heavy-Duty pickups stayed with this body style until '91, delicious anachronisms of 70s zeitgeist in the era of the Taurus and the design imperative that everything had to start looking like it was excreted from some terrible orifice. Seeing a car like this on the road is like getting back small-portrait notes in your change. "Ah" you think, "real money." Before the change that set everything on its ear. Before "they" ruined it.
@cpufreak1015 жыл бұрын
