madpadi Yep they made great road cars if you lived in a harsh environment, not too bad on fuel, Interior was hard wearing and mechanically tough, apart from driveshafts

@@liamschannel6294 since 2012, sold an old 200bhp Escort RS Turbo for it, the cossie was standard at the time and it felt slower than the escort and i thought id made a mistake,now running 380bhp and stills gives me that buzz i crave lol.

The long Sierra Cosworth has always looked a little clumsy to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that it's a part of the rally history, but when you compare it even to the other saloon-bodied cars of the era -- i.e. to the Gallant and to the Legacy -- the Ford seemed heavier and noticeably less agile: even on tarmac suspension it seemed softer-sprung, more wobbly, less precise.

The Sierra, Legacy and Galant all had wheelbase between 2590mm and 2608mm...and overall lengths within a similar narrow range.. As for weight, the various works Group A cars were all at the min weight..1230 or 1250kg... As was my own 4x4 Sierra...which is now back RWD.. The road cars they came from Galant was at least 1500kg.., Legacy a bit less and Sierra lightest ...Sometimes what you see isn't what is real..

@@janvanv But, just as you mentioned, the weight of a works Group A rally-car would normally be at the regulation minimum, so it bears little relation to that of the base production car. I doubt that the Gr. A Sierra would be significantly lighter than the Galant or the Legacy. I agree with what you're saying, though, with regard to the visual impression being potentially misleading. Sierra had a decent dose of sporting success, so it must have been fast enough. I was just speaking of it's road presence -- it certainly didn't appear nimble or agile. I guess it's strengths may have lain in the engine and, perhaps, stability at higher speeds.

@@janvanv Group A cars back then was 1100kg minimum weight. The big advantage with the Legacy over the Sierra was a much better suspension and much more travel. The Sierra probably had 50bhp more than the Legacy which suffered with its chargecooler setup. From what i have heard and read the Galant was no where near the minimum weight limit as a GrA car. Four wheel steer wasnt an advantage either although i think it was removed on later cars.
