I think its fair to say the development done in this 4x4 saff went straight into the escort cossie only a few years later,hence why it was so competitive out the box in rallying.

Ford said as much in their promo material of the Escort rally car. They took a long time to develop it though - according to Stuart Turner they rolled out the first prototype "hack" of the future Escort Cosworth in 1988.
