This is legendary BIGFOOT driver Jim Kramer taking BIGFOOT #9 up and over the infamous "Gravelrama" hill climb in Cleves, OH. This hill is man made from pea gravel and is notoriously difficult to climb. It took Bob Chandler in BIGFOOT #1 years to make it up and over. Kramer and #9 made it up and over with virtual ease. Here is what Jim had to say about it:
"I never thought I’d make it up the hill. I had smooth tread tires, and this was the first year to start at the bottom of the hill with no run at it. I did a test burnout to throw sand and try to round out the bottom, and the truck acted like it wanted to climb. At that point, I thought I might make it. I re-positioned, got set and made it up the hill, then turned around and came back down, and shot up again. I think the crowd actually liked my trip down more than going up.
The truck was equipped with a 496 alcohol engine and 2 speed Lenco transmission with Crower clutch. The combination of light truck, smooth tread tires that didn’t dig in but actually stayed on top, and lots of wheel speed took me over the top." - Jim Kramer

I was there as well, I was just a kid, was amazing, he came back down and came right to the bottom center of the crowd and we all got to shake his hand, one of the best memories of my childhood, fast forward to 2022 while back in Ohio I went to put flowers on my grandfather’s grave for Memorial Day roughly 40 yards from the summit of that very same hill.

@beltfed4624
@beltfed4624 4 жыл бұрын
This particular truck was still running an old school style clutch, he wasn't geared down enough on the first try. He dropped it in bulldog and rammed the pedal through the floorboard; even these (and modern) monster truck engines just can't roll those massive wheels very well on uphill runs, plus those tires each weighed a few hundred pounds. The newer BKT tires are basically just high performance balloon tires, much lighter. Oh, the custom built transfer cases on most of these early 90's monster trucks ran incredibly slow, while the transmission was going off the charts, so even in its lowest gear there was a lot of struggle to climb hills. Lower gearing in the differentials helped, and moving the brakes inboard to the front of the diffs or at the front driveline base helped slow them back down, as normal hub brakes weren't much of an option, especially with planetary units on the end of each axle. Sorry so long, big 4x4 trucks are my thing.
