Racer Guy well tell Tony George did that and a major reason the split took place. However he didn’t help Indycar at all and Tony Stewart and other USAC dirt and midget greats went over to the big money NASCAR.

Anthony Kernich it’s a shame that his mother Mari Hulman George let her son open the floodgates with the family Fortune to establish the IRL and nearly bankrupt the whole family by the end of the 2000s. Indycar was better as one than with two when the best drivers were in the CART series than the IRL but Tony George and his PR team at IMS productions and IMS were able to spin it like they were better than NASCAR and F1 drivers as well. If you were a Cart driver or owner you had to use Tony’s equipment. At least chip and Roger dominated when they came back after a 5 year break and won. Now after she died Tony sold the track to Roger Penske. So maybe she was truly behind the split and he just made the IRL to keep his mother happy because she really didn’t like CART or just wanted to have the final say for what the sport was. It all goes back to 1979 since they were still at war with CART at Indy with all of CART there from 1979-1995.

For what it's worth Jackie Stewart called Jeff at his home to talk about the possibility of running F3000 at the time. He declined for several reasons and that seat became de Ferrian (RIP) Lots of revisionist history on the Internet and it is true Jeff's "being overlooked" was a major linchpin in the formation of the Idiot Racing League. The sport has never recovered. The entire thing is sickening to me and thousands of ticket buying race fans moved on. We are left with an Indy 500 which could be run over a weekend and spec cars. Thanks Tony. Miss my buddy DO and Robin as well as we come up on the anniversary of "R's" passing.

@@3338MAN CART owners missed out on a great opportunity, but on the other hand, if Tony George was serious about helping drivers with Jeff's pedigree, why didn't he start a race team to develop them into IndyCar drivers?

@@NotSteveCook There`s a clip of Gordon from 1989 where he says he would really like going stock car racing, and that his ambition is to make a career in the cup series. The thing about Jeff Gordon originally wanted to race Indycars is more of a myth than reality.

@@patrickanderson9023 There's definitely substance to it. That's why he so valued winning the Brickyard 400; not just because he cut his racing teeth in Indiana, but because his dream was to be in the Indy 500. His stepdad John Bickford tried to find him an Indy Lights ride, and was effectively told "show us the money, and we'll show you a seat".
