So far - I am yet to see validation of why local shops have the audacity to charge $900 for this service. It is far from rocket science. I guarantee they are not using a friction measurement device either and just adjusting "by feel"

Im having a problem with a 95 129 pulling to the right. Ruled out suspension, alignment, tires, brakes, etc. The steering wanters to the right and i am leading towards a bad gearbox. The car only has 76k on it but im at a loss. Would the gearbox cause pressure to leak from one side and pull sterring toward the other? It does have a leak externally. I have one degree of caster difference between fronts..positive on the right wheel and it still pulls right...but slightly less

I don’t think I have the patience to do this for a daily driver. I have stiff steering both left and right, equal amounts. With an entirely rebuilt front end, I am left to figure out whether I have enough power steering pressure or if my box is bad. It’s hard to tell whether I have play because the steering is stiff. It returns to Center on most occasions but mostly I have to help it get there. I’m not sure where to start but I have to wait until USA summer.

Daren Stahl if its the spool valve jammed or its springs broken its not allowed to be repaired anyway. This is a complete box replacement job. I’d find a good used box and replace it. With fresh fluid and a filter, if still no go the pump is next I guess.

Daren Stahl i also noticed the passageways are very small so its a good idea to keep the ps system clean with clean fluid and regular filter changes. There was a buildup of black sludge inside this box.

MMWA yes, I have read that draining the system from the box (car off) and moving steering wheel stop to stop several times may reveal sludge exiting the box. The first time I did a fluid/filter change, I only flushed from the PS pump following careful directions so as not to run the pump dry at any moment. No change. Upon startup, the car does emit a power steering type “groan” ( aside for the smog pump which functions properly) , but it goes away quickly. I need to get the right tools/fittings to test PS pump pressure. PS Just to see the inside of your pump is immensely helpful. Especially learning about which parts are non-serviceable.

Daren Stahl it may well be cheaper to just get a second hand pump and throw a seal it at it before install. They are pretty easy to come by.
