I am almost positive it was this year 1990 that Kumu Hula Alicia Smith came and thought the students of Royal Elementary , each grade preformed a different hula for the May day fest able . I was in the 4th grade and one haole from the main land Springfield ,Missouri of all places . It couldn't have been a more cloture shock for me at the time , unfortunately I was a brat and probably deserved one false crack i got scolded bigtime and it was explained to me that it was a great honor the Kumu Hula Alicia Smith was the one instructing us ,I eventually fell in line and took it more for the almost family like coming together it really was like Ohana everyone do what they can to prepare for May Day. After school I stayed and learned how to process Tea leaves into green skirts , also how the dried ones I wore where made .Living on the highest road on Punch Bowl on the Honolulu side I could just go clime the mountain and harvest most of the flowers and plant leaves that where asked for .Kumu Hula Alicia Smith forever imprinted part of Hawaiian history on me in the way the story was meant to be told and when I played this video and heard her voice again it brought me to tears , today is my (yesterday I have been typing past midnight ) 44th birthday and I can not think of a better memory to revisit and share with others . Mahalo nui loa! and Aloha ..
