Fun fact: I was the guy who bought this Subaru in Oregon and drove it back to Wisconsin. I did the snorkel and dual range trans swap(edit: hey you even mentioned the previous owner doing the swap! That’s a me!). Also did the roof rack and the roof visor is an OBS Silverado visor that I cut 6” out of each side(between the mounting flanges). So 12” narrower 😂. I basically eyeballed it and riveted the cut out pieces underneath. Chase must have bondo’ed and painted it since then. Further edit: the lift kit is 1988 accord front springs installed in the rear, stock rear struts(you can use 3rd gen 4runner front struts for heavy duty upgrade) and 1992 ford tempo front springs cut 1 coil off to fit easier in the stock struts.

Its really just the toasted bushings that cause it to grind into 5th. If you double clutch its fine. And all the other gears if you hear a noise, its actually the button in the shift knob making a clicking like sound. Its my car! I just use my middle school youthbe still.

My parents bought one when I was a little kid and it was their first new car purchase since I was born. The day they pulled out of the dealer lot, they got T boned and the car was close to being totaled.

Impressive to see one of these still moving under its own power. Early Subarus are a rare sight because they weren't very reliable or rust-proof. I like the mods. This is a car you can beat up off-road and not feel bad about it. A 4x4 sedan or wagon was a weird thing in the 90s, even more so if it was dual range. This car's only real competitor and predecessor was the AMC Eagle.
@j_mars_cars10 ай бұрын
Ok so rust definitely kills the old loyale’s but reliability is incredible. Many many of these ea82’s are still clocking over 200-300k miles. They’re slow, and they leak oil, but they never die. This exact car being reviewed went off road basically stock aside from 1” taller tires and I went through water over the headlights for a brief second. It still runs great 😂
@bldontmatter531910 ай бұрын
@@j_mars_carsthe major issue is the head gaskets blowing, which subies struggled with until the 2010s if I recall
@j_mars_cars10 ай бұрын
@@bldontmatter5319you are literally dead wrong. The ea82 is NOT known for head gaskets. Do some research! The ej25 from 1997-2008 was known for it due to the type of material used and being a single layer gasket. The ea82 makes so little power and has lower compression, meaning it doesn’t blow anything ever. It just slowly leaks oil forever.

My Dad had an estate/wagon version in the UK when I was a child... it was called a Subaru DL and HL in the UK... it needed an engine rebuild at 150k miles but lived on in a farm for over 10years... most reliable car I've ever known and as my Dad like to go fishing the 4WD got him out of trouble a few times
