Jose, thanks for posting this. I'm playing in the Parris Island Band, and was a young LCpl at the time. I don't have any of these videos since they were VCR tapes at the time. Thank you very much. Semper Fi.

Ooh rah. This video was shot when I was at PI as a Series Cdr and later receiving barracks. At 14:14, the Battalion Cdr shaking hands with the DI's is "Tony" Pesavento who was also on staff at the U.S. Naval Academy when I was mid just a few years previously. He was a fine Marine leader who I greatly admired. That's Col Trainor who starts speaking at 25:15. It's just too bad the sound is no good for most of his speech. He, too, was fine leader of Marines who kept the main thing the main thing and minimized the bullsh*t. The DI's and the Recruit Training Regiment company staffs make all this look easy, but there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes in training recruits. On a side note, this graduation was one of the first, if not the first, at which all the grads were issued and wore dress blues, I think in all of 20th century Marine Corps history. This was somewhat controversial at the time since traditionally only the platoon honor men in the company got to wear them for graduation. It was a recruiting selling point, but it was expensive to issue Dress Blues to all the enlisted so it didn't last all that long. Officer and NCO's paid out of pocket for ours. Since then, the trend goes in an out depending on budget. In any case, the DI's and company staffs are up before the recruits and don't turn in until after they do. Then, they're back it again the next morning day after day until the next cycle, which can start as early as the next day after graduation of the company they just trained, though that doesn't always happen--and there is never a complaint about it. As Series Commander, it was standard operating procedure to run all the obstacles on the confidence course before the recruits did to make sure they weren't wet and unsafe, so that would include the big intimidators like the Slide-for-Life, the A-frame, the Stairway to Heaven, the triple-platform tower, the Weaver, etc. If they were wet, we had to dry them off or de-ice them. You dried off the Slide For Life, and pretty much all the rest of them, by running it a few times until your clothes sopped up all the moisture. You didn't have a corpsman or anyone else with you if you fell off and broke your neck. So, you made sure you didn't. Just another day on the drill field.

In 1994 I went through MCRD San Diego and we graduated in our Charlies. I was never issued the Dress Blues and never bought them during my 4 year enlistment. I can only think of two occasions I would've worn them if I had them but my Alphas were just fine. So in my book I didn't waste money on a blouse I would've worn only 2 times. Semper Fi :)
