I ran into Russell Maryland at a Cowboys game. I reminded him about his three sack performance at the Cotton Bowl and he was surprised I remembered it. The guy was a gentle teddy bear!

Texas ran into a pissed off Miami team and then Texas tried to talk smack with the Hurricanes. That was a combination for disaster.

Like Lamar Thomas said if it wasn’t for all those penalties it would have been 90-3😆😆😆😆😆

Texas did themselves no favors with the trash talk during the week. Failure to adjust schemes offensively and defensively sealed the casket. Texas should have been using zone, nickel and dime stuff defensively. They thought man coverage would work like it did against Houston that year. But, it didn't. Miami's offensive line was the best in America that year. Offensively, going to shotgun would have been the thing to do instead of trying the play action based crap; it takes too long. Miami's D Line generated too much pressure. The shotgun would have taken some of the sting out of that upfield rush.

Russell Maryland, multiple National Championships at every level of football he has ever played in. Alot of great players from these Miami Hurricanes teams starting with Howard Schnellenberg. It's too bad that the University of Miami hasn't been the U for a very long time.

It's weird to see Miami wearing a Big East patch despite playing as an Independent for the 1990 season. Was that simply because the calendar turned to 1991 and they were "officially" Big East members at that point? As a Temple alum the move to the Big East turned a less than ideal situation into a dumpster fire. It's hard to believe Texas was #3 heading into the bowl season but to be fair they had a really good win over Penn State and their lone loss was a close one to #1/#2 Colorado. Had ND beaten Colorado it would have been interesting to see if Tech would have still had to split the title with either 2 loss ND or 2 loss Miami.

Texas actually wasn't a bad team. The talent differential really wasn't all the big between the two teams. However, the experience difference made the difference. Miami knew how to prepare and adjust for these games. Texas didn't. Why after the first couple of drives was the shotgun not used? Why defensively was a zone not used instead of man. Miami receivers are not Houston receivers Miami's offensive line was the best that year

I definately remember this game. I went to it with my dad. He had the tickets from work and I had spent the night prior at a high school buddies NYE party with just us seniors. I was brought home around 6am and was not feeling to great to say the least. Dad was insistant that we were going to the game. I remember that they ran out of coffee and hot chocolate sometime during the 2nd qtr and I was freezing. I'm pretty sure my dad wasn't having a great time but wanted me to suffer through the cold with my hangover. After the halftime when thecteams started coming back on the field my dad figured I'd learned my lesson or he couldn't stand the cold anymore but he decided we could call it a day and head home. Most miserable game I've ever been to. Great memories though

Miami didn't even want to be there. I remember reading in the newspaper how the Miami players were sullen, resentful. They felt passed over. So when they arrived in Dallas, they just told each other, "Let's just kick this team's ass, get on the plane and go home." Texas, meanwhile, was being rated by some as possibly No. 1 in the nation (which shows again what a cynical, subjective exercise this national rating system is). Texas had not beaten anybody nationally, they were playing in a very soft Southwest Conference, and Miami's attitude was, "Texas hasn't played anybody like us!" And they proceded to show Texas that they were not ready for prime time.

When you get 200 yards of penalties, and still win by 43 points, it's questionable if the other team showed up/ Texas should have yielded the field to their cheerleaders Shock the nation ...yep, the nation was shocked alright

Texas ran there mouths way too much before the game. Miami was trying to change there image but Texas kept pushing. When a team has alot of penalties, they lose. Miami kicked Texas all over the field and with the most penalties. Japan pushed the USA too much, how did that work out for Japan?

This was a ass kicking of massive proportions and it would’ve been worst if it wasn’t for the penalties they could’ve but up 50 points on Texas if you notice Miami celebrating and bragging you notice The Rock in the front of those hurricanes

Miami kicked the shit out of the Horns, and it was beautiful. It's funny how Miami was viewed at the time. All the celebrations just having fun led to so many rule changes. However, all the celebrations Miami did that day look damn near like what Tim Tebow did his entire career at UF. The Horns are use to getting their asses kicked in the Cotton Bowl, OU does it damn near every year.

Can't get past this music that CBS used instead of their regular 🐐 theme. Maybe it was a nod to end of their 82-90 run (only aired a handful of bowl games from 91-95). Sure the game ended up ass but for Miami and Texas in the Cotton Bowl, c'mon

Notre dame could have played Miami again but chose to play west Virginia, they said we want to play the highest ranked unbeaten team so that way they could avoid the hurricanes whom they best earlier in the year by one point, they didn't want any part of the hurricanes in a rematch

This is the crazy 1990 season. ND and Miami both had 2 losses. Miami had the shocking loss to BYU to start the '90 season then lost to ND in October. ND had a bad loss to Stanford and then lost to Penn State on a last second FG. Both losses occurred while ND was #1. Colorado and Georgia Tech ultimately shared the 1990 title. ND and Miami were just as good imo. Colorado had the 5th down against Mizzou and block in the back call against ND go their way. Georgia Tech was really well coached to go with darn good talent. The Yellow Jackets honestly probably deserved the title outright with a 11-0-1 record. The fact that Colorado was 1 vote away from an outright title remains crazy to me. You're thinking of the 1988 season. Notre Dame played an undefeated #3 West Virginia team in the Fiesta Bowl. ND didn't chicken out. They played the last undefeated team left, WVU, for the title. This is after beating undefeated #2 USC to close out the regular season. ND literally played the top 4 teams in 1988; #1 Miami, #2 USC, # 3 WVU and #4 Michigan. Not sure if that was ever done pre-playoff.

I remember asking myself while watching this game live, "How in the f&*% does a team as terrible as Texas get ranked as #3 in the country " For cryin' out loud ... Miami had a gazillion yards in penalties, and still scored 46 points. The average Division II team would have been more competitive.
