Joe Gibbs proved that you could win 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QB's. I believe he's still the only NFL coach to have done it. Gibbs was a master at building great teams on offense, defense & special teams. He never had a super star Montana / Marino level QB but the 3 he did have were all good enough to get it done.

I think Bobby Beathard had more than just a little to do with that, as well. Gibbs was a great coach, no question, but Beathard got the talent.
@GTX1123
@GTX1123 2 жыл бұрын
@@jpwjr1199For sure. He couldn't a' done it without Bobby. He got Joe the talent he needed. But Joe was who got John Riggins to come back. That story is so amazing. Riggo was "put a fork in me I'm done" after having his heart broken in that 1979 season but Joe got him to come back.

@@davec1294 Bears would have won 3 SB's under Gibbs. You can make the case that the Bears teams in the 80s were better than Gibbs' Redskins. Big difference was that Gibbs was a superior coach than Ditka.
@Mr.sock28
@Mr.sock28 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joseph-lz5er yes, which was proven by Gibbs definitively when he went into Chicago twice in the playoffs ('86 and '87) as an underdog and beat Ditka. That '86 Bears team was 14-2 and looked like a lock to repeat in the Super Bowl. The Bears and Ditka were cocky. The local headline was "Bears Ready If Redskins Even Show Up" - the Redskins showed up and dropped 27 points on their vaunted defense. And they beat them again the following year with Darrell Green's punt return and McMahon's turnovers. You might say Gibbs and the Redskins singlehandedly prevented a Bears dynasty in the mid 1980s.

Dominant, dominant team. From an outsider's perspective the only negative is that their playoff run lacked a signature opponent. Atlanta/Detroit/Buffalo just doesn't have the same feel as a game with Dallas/Giants/Philadelphia/San Francisco. Of course this wasn't Washington's fault.

At the end of the game you can see the character of Jerry Glanville running off the field and not shaking hands with Joe Gibbs. Joe just kept looking for him to shake hands and eventually realized he just left. Glandville showed no class or sportsmanship. Joe Gibbs would never do that, that’s why he is respected not only for being a great football coach but also for being a great man who represented class, humility, and respect for the game. One of the all time greatest coaches ever! HTTR!

The Redskins were in control the entire game. The Falcons defense somehow kept the score to 24 even though Chip Lohmiller missed 3 field goals and the Falcons were still in it 14-7 by halftime. That's the crazy thing. Even after all those turnovers the Falcons were still in this game, but the Redskins were just too good and too talented to lose this game.

I think Glanville got everything out of those Falcon teams he could. They came into Washington so fired up and the Skins simply swatted them away. Although it was a 7 point game at halftime..it felt like 20. 1991 also didn't have the super friendly offensive rules that we do now...where a 24 point can vanish before you can finish a beer.

Jerry Glanville is such an a-hole. In an interview in 2021 he said he was still bitter about Joe Gibbs allegedly asking the grounds crew to leave the field uncovered leading up to this game so that it would be water-logged and slow down Glanville's "faster" team. He conveniently forgot to mention, nor did the interviewer bring it up, that Glanville's Falcons had lost to the Redskins earlier in the season on a dry RFK by 39 points (56-17)! Rypien threw SIX TD passes in that game. Glanville was lucky the field was wet for this playoff game. It was the only thing that kept the Redskins from putting up another 50 spot and allow his overmatched Falcons to stay in this game for as long as they did!!

Lots of talk in Atlanta how Washington coaches got the grounds crew to water the field down even more adding to the heavy rain.

While Washington got to play on the dry field next door....? Is that the point?
@chrisbridges655
@chrisbridges655 Жыл бұрын
No the point is Washington was built for a game in bad weather and bad playing conditions. The Falcons relied on speed and needed a dry surface to do well. Rain is rain but when they water it down even more on purpose that is stretching the rules to say the least. @@Hexon66

I was there - there was no need to water it down. It had rained for days and it just poured the entire game. That's how I got there - Mom and Dad had bought season tickets from someone in the diplomatic corps (as I recall) and, while Mom love going to the games, the rain was too much for her - she told me the day before that I could go - she didn't want to sit in the cold rain. I'm a lifelong Raider fan - we used to hear the same complaints from opposing teams - the truth was the Oak-Al Co. stadium was built below sea level and close to the bay - it was always soggy there. But it didn't slow Warren Wells and Cliff Branch.

Late in the game Washington had a very substantial lead. One of the hotshot, loudmouth, showboating, blowhard, egomaniac Falcons jumped up and started dancing and "actin a fool" after they had a good play. It was pathetic. Russ Grimm (I think) ran over and grabbed the guy and then pointed at the scoreboard. The fans went nuts.

Gibbs was looking for Glanville to shake hands after the game. That loser Glanville ran straight to the locker room. Gibbs was all class all the time. Greatest Head Coach in NFL History.

If only the Falcons didn't win on that stupid hail mary pass against SF. 49ers against the Redskins would have been a better game. Especially since the 49ers got hot down the stretch.
