I had the same car. It handled the twisty roads on the Northern California coast better than anything else I'd driven. Very nimble and good brakes but you had to use the transmission and keep it in the powerband.

I'll never forget giving rides home from a House Party in my 1991 Escort Pony. Three of us in front; Five more in back. We were in college and I was at least 50 lbs. lighter at the time.

@@turbo4g63det No way, the white ones were the fastest. The manual transmission was a little rubbery, but otherwise it was such a great car.

I had a 93 GT - great power train with the 5 speed and overall car. The brakes - being Ford - ended up being a little wonky but otherwise no real issues. Mazda knows how to build a good engine/manual transmission. You could get the same power train in the top end LX-E (4 door).

The European Ford Escort Rs Turbo would have done well in the Americas. Why remodel a model for different markets? Why is this the case?

The Euro Ford Escort of this period was infamously terrible - this was a rare instance of NA getting the better product (because it was a Mazda). Even the best European Escort at that time, the Cossie, wasn't really an Escort - it was a Sierra underneath :D
