1991 Holiday Bowl Iowa vs. BYU

Iowa's attempt to become the winningest team in Hawkeye history came up just short at the hands of Ty Detmer and BYU. The 1990 Heisman Trophy winner passed for 350 yards in rallying the Cougars back from a 13-0 deficit. Iowa built its lead on two touchdown runs by Mike Saunders. Saunders joined Iowa's exclusive 1,000-yard in a season club. He had 103 yards on 19 carries to give him 1,022 yards for the season and 1,476 career rushing yards. Iowa QB Matt Rogers completed 19 of 28 passes for 221 yards. Jon Filloon caught a career-high seven passes for 107 yards in his final game as a Hawkeye. All-American defensive end Leroy Smith was injured in the first half and never returned to the Iowa lineup. BYU had a chance to win the game with 30 seconds to play. The Cougars had a first down on the Iowa 18-yard line with the score tied. However, Detmer's final pass was intercepted by Carlos James at the goal line. Teddy Jo Faley led Iowa's defenders with 14 tackles, including 13 solo stops. The Hawkeyes finished the season ranked 10th in both the AP and CNN/USA Today polls with a 10-1-1 record.

This was a painful end to a fantastic season. The first full season of CFB I ever watched and my hook into this great sport. This Hawkeyes squad was sensational and, up to this point, had enjoyed a magical reign in San Diego at the Holiday Bowl.

Shouldve never tied BYU that year. Iowa had a great team. Went 10-1. Only loss was to Michigan. One of Iowa's greatest teams ever. Shouldve won this one. If i remember right Leroy Smith got hurt in the first half. He was a game wrecker.

BYU should've won. Yes Iowa had a really good team and they were favored But the Cougars domiinated the last quarters of the game. Detmer isn't going for a TD late( INT in end zone to allow it to remain a tie) instead of a FG if our kicking game wasnt so atrocious that night.
