This race is a microcosm of Robby Gordon's career. Crazy fast and aggressive. This was years before drifting was added to the Grand Prix of Long Beach schedule, Can't drive a 1 hour race like that.

The archaic iron-block SOHC Ford in the Whistler Mustang was a beast. The Roush engine guys said that with boost turned up it was good for an estimated 950 horsepower.

In a Dorsey Scroeder interview, he said 1300hp for qualif, when he was driving prior to that in the cougar (before becoming that mustang)

These cars were beasts. And the drivers were beasts too. Im not sure if any of today's modern drivers could drive these cars.

Love this type of automobile racing..TransAm!!👍

This is the IMSA GTO/GTU series, not Trans-Am. However, the cars do look practically identical to the ones used in Trans-Am at the time.

i don’t think the halsmer/gordon spin was intentional as halsmer implied (which all but confirmed that his ramming of gordon was intentional), it looked like robby just left the crossover a bit too late as he was trying to do it at the last moment before pete committed to his braking line, but he misjudged it and pete started to brake before robby had completely cleared his rear bumper. robby’s desperate defending with a damaged car was painful to watch. you can’t just drive people into the wall if they dare to get alongside you - that’s not racing. (incidentally, it’s pretty much what the slower car did to robby earlier in the race, and robby was less kind than the two nissan drivers were to him, left his nose in, and spun the slower car.)

not "more downforce"; shift of weight distribution
@doylerudolph796510 күн бұрын
i mean, weight is the most rudimentary form of downforce.
