Probably you've already seen the on board video I was able to get of the MEC Auto Racing' Jaguar XJR-14 last June. Now I put together all the video I have of this beautiful group C race car from the outside.

0:37 is probably one of the best shots of any racecar ever: The black asphalt winding over the slight crest, grass, fences and trees close on either side; the birds sining increasingly overshadowed by the arousing scream of a racecar; A racecar which finally speeds into the picture, past the viewer. My friend and i watched it come through Turn 12 at Road Atlanta that year ('91), and looked at each other in disbelief ...and i'm an old formula car driver...amazing grip. Turn 12 is where i felt the most g-force in a car...anywhere...skin being pulled to the left side of your face...big time g-loading in that corner...with a fast approaching solid clay bank on the outside.

Little Fact: This engine (3500 Ford-Cosworth HB V8) is the same engine used by the Benetton F1 team car in the early 90s. (The one with the Camel livery)

In various specs (due to development over time and factory vs customer specs) it was used by: 1989 to 1993 - Benetton as official factory team.1991 - Jordan.1992 - Lotus, Fondmetal.1993 - McLaren, Lotus, Minardi.1994 - Minardi, Larrousse, Simtek, Footwork (Arrows).

Btw: In my original comment about the HB engine I shamefully forgot to mention McLaren in 1993! Senna claimed his last five victories with this engine: his home win in Brazil, his famous rain show at Donington, Monaco, Japan and then his last win at Adelaide...how could I forget!?

A LOT of the car is actually the 1990 Benetton F1 car in terms of philosophy, suspension dynamics, weight distribution, engine and gearbox etc…

Keith Duckworth commented that using a DFV in cars like these was unsuitable In effect a F1 engine is just that. Perhaps he had been persuaded with this one as it certainly went. Did Ross Braun design the car?

Group C was just fantastic, watching these monster cars racing through the night at Le Mans.

The XJR-14 should have been raced at Le Mans in 1991 but TWR decided not to because of reliability concerns of the Ford Cosworth HB V8 which at the time was the same engine that the Benetton team was racing with in F1 as they were the official Ford factory team. For Le Mans that year, Jaguar took the XJR-12 out of mothballs due to better reliability. The XJR-14 was used for the shorter races for the FIA World Sportscar Championship to battle the Peugeot and the Mercedes which was driven at one time by some guy named Michael Schumacher

Probably one of the fastest Normally Aspirated Group C cars ever, and it wasn't raced at LeMans in '91 cause Jag didn't know if the Ford Cosworth HB V-8 could do the entire 24 hours so they saved it for the shorter races that year

They took part in qualifying at 91 Le Mans (I was there) but Andy Wallace buzzed the gearbox and qualified second so Tom Walkinshaw withdrew the 3 cars. I saw them race at Silverstone 1000 kms and they were utterly gorgeous in every way.

Hands down, thing's got the sexiest profile among all group C cars. Many others have a bulky and elongated back where the engine sits, which makes the car look somewhat less attractive as you see on the Lancia and the Porsche (check out your UP NEXT playlist on the right!). But of course the best livery award goes to Martini.

I get the overall point, but you can't undo technological know-how. Or if you do that, you end up with a right-turning version of Nascar. Should this car from 1991 have also used technology from the 1960s?

No, but it's not about technological know how, it's about racing. Nascar is undeniably one of the most popular sports in the US and possibly worldwide (don't quote me on that). It's because of what it is. I love sportscar racing, but what I really want is a 600-900 HP, fire-spitting, screaming, and close racing experience. Even from a drivers perspective, it's just not as much an experience in a car that doesn't rumble with the least possible refinement, or a car that isn't screaming so loud that it sounds as if it's trying to contact Mars. Think late 90's and early 2000's GT1, think F1 just a few years ago, think the Formula V8 series, and yes, think Nascar. It's all racing, and more to the point, it's what racing has always been (well ok, maybe not Formula 1 but, they had multiple opportunities to fix that I think). Never in history, was there a quiet race car, or a refined race car, or a "safe" race car, and by safe I don't mean it has to kill you every time you go off, because then nobody would do it, but I mean it doesn't need to feel that way, if you know what I mean. I think it's sad that people, even car people, think that technology can really replace the heart and sole of humanity. I can't make music without a computer trying to show me up, or draw, or drive. It's kind of sad really.

Maybe my post turned out a bit wrong. Racing has lost some of the "danger and fire-spitting" appeal and e.g. Formula E has little appeal to me car-wise, there's too much "road relevancy" marketing bullcrap (but that's really the only reason manufacturer teams exist), but LMP1 isn't a spec class like Nascar is, so you simply can't restrict the technology to certain level from a decade or two ago. Regulations can direct things, but this is what the manufacturers want because they have to make fuel efficient cars and thus via racing market fuel efficient cars. I'm now mostly talking about LMP1 because this Jaguar basically was one. If you want more danger, rather complain about the modern neutered car park circuits... Whether the cars have ERS in addition to combustion engines have little to do with spitting fire, they wouldn't spit any more fire than they do even if they weren't hybrids because that's just how the technology advances. And if you then force them to spit more fire "for show", then it kind of becomes like an anti-race car because it is not making the car faster and better. _Even from a drivers perspective ..._ In WEC the drivers praise the current LMP1 cars as exciting and especially cars that allow them to drive hard, instead of conserving. The combined power figures (combustion + ERS) even exceed 1000 bhp, and only one of the three LMP1s is a silent diesel. Take it or leave it...

+Turbo Busa Both very loud. But I'd say this one a bit louder especially when you hear it coming toward you. For example when you hear the first fly by you can hear the audio a bit saturated at 0:46 (same thing happened to my hears)
