Bar Hungary 1989 - this was probably the best weekend of Patrese’s career. Took a brilliant pole position in a car set up for Mansell with only a few minutes left in the session, and did his job very solidly on race day. He deserved that win, even if Mansell was unlucky.

Was it? Patrese won by 20 seconds (from pole). Alesi was further 33 seconds back from Senna in second... F1 at the moment is the best it has been in a long time. 2025 should be even better with the car specs staying roughly the same.

The M191 was a decent car in Martini’s hands. He had 2x 4th places that season and was robbed of a 5th place in Japan with gearbox issues. Amazing to see Gugelmin qualify 7th - he was often criticised by James Hunt as being a “soldier-arounder” rather than a real racer, but he was very competent.

@@nathanwilliams2152 Gugelmin was a decent driver. He definitely showed how good he was with more equitable equipment in IndyCar. Not a championship contender, but more than capable of mixing it up at the front winning the odd race. Too bad he and Stefano Modena didn't join Jordan in 1991 instead of 1992. They would have made some big noise giant killing in the Jordan 191.

This was a fantastic era of F1...just listen to those cars. The drivers were proper characters, even the commentators were excellent. This sanitised boring modern F1 could learn a lot by going back to the future.

How did Mansell go from outside Senna to inside Berger by the exit of turn 1? Sadly there was a muscular move here that we never saw.
@AbCat4Ай бұрын
You can see most of it from 2:44. Mansell holds his own around the outside of Senna, and then cuts him off (again!) and slips inside Berger who'd gone too far wide. Mansell was a massively underrated driver, to the point where if he'd been 30lbs lighter there would never have been a Senna-Prost rivalry.
@fiarandompenaltygeneratorm5044Ай бұрын
@@AbCat4 I've heard the thing about Mansell's size being a hinderance, and if he were just a little smaller, he would have been untouchable. He was the first driver I rooted for in F1...in this very season, 1991. I still rate Mansell quite highly. Easily could have been a 4 time world champion.
