I think it's fascinating some of the things you see, like the warping of the subframe being demonstrated, or how that component behaves in a crash test. While crumple zones are a thing, It's almost like it serves as a pivot point in that collision and almost deflects the passenger compartment to the side of the collision, rather than keeping the body aligned with it. It's interesting to think how many components are designed with multiple purposes (other than what they were mainly designed for) for a vehicle, and how difficult it must be to design those abilities in. Or to array them in such a way that they serve an alternative purpose outside of expected application. I'm an amateur mechanic so I think it's just plain neat the things I've been learning about our 3 Toyotas for example, a 1993 T100, a 2004 Corolla, and a 2007 FJ Cruiser, and seeing changes from decade-to-decade as well as different structure types like body-on-frame vs unibody, and how differently they were put together as the decades progressed. The other neat things were physically checking up on the behavior of the suspension and the tires, and especially the testing of the ergonomics of the cabin; seeing how reaching for different regions of the dash and center console seemed to work out and whether or not they would need adjustment prior to fabrication. Now it's all just minimalism and shitty touch screens, and unless you're removing the driver from the equation ENTIRELY it just doesn't work. And they're finally learning that far too after the fact I'm afraid. Nobody working on the car seems to know what the hell they are doing any more, regardless of government regulations. It really makes you wonder how much or how little work like this they put into automotive design now... the way cars are now, they're an unfunny joke.

I was playing with the Gameboy (the original 1st one) from my sister in the backseat. Suddenly we stop for no reason. My dad steps out and starts talking with someone. I turn around, and there was a totally smashed Trabant (east german car) standing there. I step out of the car and a women comes to me and asks me if im fine. I answered yes.. She said "u must be so afraid after that crash" - so we crashed into that car because he didnt saw us driving by. I didnt notice a thing. i heard nothing, i felt nothing. And the Mercedes had only a couple scratches, broken front light and a couple dents. I then acted like i was shocked to get sweets from her haha. - it worked This thing was built like a tank.

Buttons with good resistance and good engine reliability. Only got 40k miles on it and only issues were a few sensors that have just failed with time. Otherwise it’s apparently in very good condition, probably since it was mostly in the garage. I purchased the same model in 2011 from a local Arab in the UAE. It was in impeccable condition, right down to every bolt and screw. While driving down a road, I encountered a small tunnel. Upon exiting, I had to ascend a slight incline before the road straightened suddenly. As I emerged, traffic came to an abrupt halt. I had to brake hard because I was going a bit too fast. After braking, the car jolted slightly, though initially, I thought it was just in my head. Suddenly, there was a knock on my car window. A gentleman asked if I was alright. I assured him that I was fine and inquired about the reason for his concern. He then informed me that he had collided with my car. Upon inspection, I noticed that his brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer, purchased just a few months prior, was completely wrecked, whereas my W140 rear bumper only had a few scratches. maybe its cos im a 90s kid, maybe its just nostalgia, but seeing one on the road nowadays always brings a warm delight. to me this is the best looker from the sonderklasse family. an edifice of a world that i grew up in that no longer exists.

Cars definitely peaked in the 90s, it’s the perfect merging of modern comforts, good looks, and even lots of bells and whistles that today’s cars don’t have.

I think about how for gasoline engines, EFI finally meant the possibility of a reliable California smog engine. Well, some EFI smog engines existed in the 80s, but in the 1990s, everything had it.
