When was the last time the Redskins won in Cincy? How 'bout the ONLY time the ‘Skins won in Cincy?!?
The ’91 Super-Skins got it done at old Riverfront Stadium, the only Washington win in Cincinnati to date, withstanding a fierce Bengals comeback to improve their record to 4-0. With fiery head coach Sam Wyche storming up and down the sidelines (love it!), the Bengals nearly rallied for the upset. But, after a late touchdown by Gerald Riggs (his third of the day), the Bengals were left - as Tony Kornheiser put it - “the best 0-4 team in football”. Riggs’ hattrick carried the day but was Brian Mitchell’s 2nd quarter punt-return touchdown that stole the show.
The Redskins played in Cincinnati just four times in team history, not counting the 2016 London game that technically counted as a Bengals home game played to a 27-27 tie (ugh). As of this posting, Washington holds a 5-5-1 record vs Cincy, 4-1 at home and just this one win in “The Jungle”.
Remastered from VHS to 1080p(ish) digital using at least 25% post-consumer recycled plastics - because every day is Earth Day, people!

I only caught the last 5 minutes of the game as a 7 year old. My parents took me and my brother TV shopping and saw bits and pieces especially at Circuit City.

Another great game, the Bangles fought hard but the Redskins were pretty much unstoppable that year.

So glad I found your channel. This is awesome. Being able to watch old Redskins games, priceless. This era of the Skins was unreal. They were such a great team. One of the best ever in the league, the 1991 team.

Playing the Redskins must have brought back some good memories for Sam Wyche - he went to Superbowl 7 as a backup QB for the Redskins in 1972

Sam Wyche and Joe Gibbs coached against each other 3 times in their careers and no matter what the records were for their teams all 3 games were nailbiters. 1985: The final time John Riggins was active for a Redskins game at RFK though he didn't play in that game. Both teams came into the game needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt. Wyche watched his Bengals take a 24-7 lead in the 2nd quarter and the ultimately the lead evaporated with the Redskins coming back and taking the lead 27-24 in the 4th quarter. The Bengals had a chance to send the game into overtime in the closing seconds of the game, but Jim Breech's 50 yard field goal attempt sailed wide right as time expired. Ultimately both teams wound up missing the playoffs that year. 1988: In the regular season finale, Wyche and the Bengals needed a win to win the AFC Central and lock up home field advantage in the playoffs and have the inside track to the Super Bowl while Gibbs and the Redskins were defending world champions but were having a rare bad year and were already out of the playoffs and were just trying to avoid the first losing season in Gibbs first tenure. The Bengals trailed most of the day but tied up the game late in the 4th quarter 17-17 on a long Boomer Esiason to Eddie Brown touchdown pass. The Redskins had a chance to win it on the last play of regulation but Chip Lohmiller's field goal attempt bounced off the upright and was no good. The Bengals went on to win it in overtime and clinch the AFC Central and homefield advantage in the playoffs. 1991: This time Gibbs and the Redskins were undefeated and the hottest team in the NFL while the Bengals were winless and in the basement as they had this week 4 matchup. Most people figured the undefeated Redskins would blow the winless Bengals out of the stadium. But a 27-10 Redskins lead in the 3rd quarter evaporated as the Bengals staged a furious rally to tie the game in the 4th quarter. But the Redskins put together a long drive and scored the winning TD with just a few minutes left in the game.

We’ll see their ‘85 matchup someday on this channel. The tape is a little rougher than others, will see what can be made of it.

The 91 Bengals despite their record played hard vs the NFC East: this aforementioned Washington game, beat the Giants, almost won at Philly, and led Dallas after 3 quarters

It's amazing how the Bengals just dropped off the face of the earth and became the Bungals until they won the division in 2006. They were 9-7 the year before and won a wildcard game. How did they suck so bad in just one season?

They were more talented than their record in 91. They were a playoff team the previous 3 seasons before this

Sam Wyche always matched up well against NFC East teams for some reason, even when his teams record was awful. He went 4-0 against the NFC East in 1988. In 1985 he beat both the playoff bound Cowboys and Giants and led the whole game against the Redskins until the 4th quarter. When he went to Tampa he swept the Cardinals in 92 and then swept the Redskins in 94 and went 2-0 against the NFC East in 95 beating both the Eagles and Redskins.

The good old days. Real football. This is why I have a hard time getting fired up pulling for the commanders. It seems our team has sank into oblivion
