This was the match that Bob Willis got his best bowling figures, 7 for 78 in Australia's first innings (until he surpassed it with 8 for 43 in that famous game four years later).

they seem to have forgotten Woolmer made 149 against the Aussies two years earlier, and ESPN say his career as a player was overshadowed by that as coach. He was a very fine player who would have played many more tests had he not signed for WSC.

So this was the silver jubilee year for this test. I’m currently watching the lords test against NZ during the platinum Jubilee. Amazing

For us Aussie's, 1977 in England was a shocking disaster. Having lost both Ian's, Chappell and Redpath to retirement, the great DK Lillee to injury, Greg Chappell's team displayed very ordinary batting, and also close in fielding, with any number of dropped catches behind the wicket every test. Thomson was coming back from his terrible shoulder injury, Walker bowled very patchily,Pascoe being inexperienced, and O'Keefe with his 'nude' leg spin bowling,we were a sorry lot. The announcement of Packer's WSC also had an effect on all involved. I still can't watch much of the series, even after all these years. Thanks for the upload, nevertheless 😁😉

Always thought the 77 squad was probably the second worst Aussie team to tour England in the last 50 years. (85 the worst) (As well as the players you mention Ross Edwards was also missing. The bowling was weak and the batting was very inconsistent

@@dlamiss Thanks for your reply. Indeed, the '85 side was very ordinary. I guess the commonality between them was in 77 and the upcoming Packer series ,and '85 the rebel tour's of South Africa. Either way, it was hard to watch!

@@nealenewton4193 the 77 side had Chappell and McCosker who both got runs as well as Walters who also finally had some consistency in England and in 85 for the first four tests the batting was ok but the bowling was massively short. The rebel tour seriously weakened them. I reckon had Alderman and Rackeman not been banned they probably would have held on to the ashes but by the 6th test they were awful

@@dlamiss Greg Chappell got runs, both McCosker and Walters were patchy in their run making. There was no rebel tour in 77,tho this series preceded the beginning of World Series Cricket. The rebel tours happened in the mid 80's,after Chappell,McCosker, Walters, Marsh,Pascoe etc had retired.

Hang on - 64 for 4 and 23 overs left, that's only 7 an over, and in today's tests, Stokes would have a go, as would many teams, interesting how slow and careful teams were then.
