Jim Kaat must of put a hex on Dennis Eckersley because as soon as he mentions on air (at the 2:33:25 mark), the infamous home run that Eckersley gave up to Kirk Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, Roberto Alomar also takes him deep. And mind you that 1992 was the same season in which Dennis Eckersley won not only the AL Cy Young Award but the American League Most Valuable Player Award.

Just want to acknowledge Olerud's contribution as his awesomeness often sneaks by unnoticed.
@BAYAREA-kd1ig4 жыл бұрын
I recognized it, for a couple of years felt like he was the missing piece for a up and coming playoff team. Signs with Mets in the late 90's they got better, signs with Mariners and guess what they improved. He was like the missing piece. One of my favorite players and oh how I wish the helmot story about him and Rickey Henderson was true.

Olerud was underrated as a Jay IMO. Always contributed either at the plate or defensively on the field. '93 was his best year obviously, winning the batting crown( .363 avg )& carried a + .400 average well into August that year.

Thanks for posting this. I watched this game live 28 years ago on a Sunday which was my birthday. I thought for sure, we would lose after Morris’ outing. When Alomar hit that HR, I knew it then they were going to the WS and had a shot at against the Braves. This game was the turning point in Blue Jay history!

The Thanksgiving Day weekend in Canada in 1992 was this series. I was with my folks at my brother's house for the turkey dinner when I told him what happened in innings 8, 9, and 11 of this game. His eyes got wider with a stunned look on his face especially when I got to the following part: "In the top of the ninth, with a runner on third, The Moment! ALOMAR.....BURNED.....ECKERSLEY!......lined him over the right-field wall, TIED the game!". After I told him, "Derek Bell tagged and scored. It was the final run of the game; 3-1 series lead!", I reminded him about previous collapses by the Blue Jays. He responded; 'There isn't gonna BE any collapse THIS TIME!", and then went back upstairs.

Love the way Henke didn't mess around and went right after McGwire for the last out - threw nothing but strikes and had him off balance the entire at-bat. That's how it's done - not nibbling at the corners and running the count full.

I sooo remember this game, I hated these BlueJay teams so much, 92 and 93, the Phillies in 93, had the best chance at beating them, but blew it, with the Joe Carter home run, I wanted them to lose sooo bad, but knew they were going to win, they were loaded with all stars, from top to bottom.
@bravesrule3842 жыл бұрын
@ Fartbrain - as a Braves fan, I was so pulling for Oakland in this series, bc I felt like they were an aging team (at the time) and would provide the Braves with the better chance of winning, than the Jays would. I felt the 92 Braves team were a bit overmatched by the 92 Jays team. As far as what happened in 93, as sad as I was the Phillies knocked the Braves out of the postseason that year, I pulled for the Phills in the WS against the Jays bc I still had no respect for the Jays after the 92 WS. I still distinctly remember both Gruber and Alomar doing the chop after two wins by the Jays in 92. I remember going to sleep at the point in Game 4 when the Phils were up 14-9, thinking they had wrapped Game 4 and my jaw completely dropped when I woke up just shortly after the game ended to find out the Jays had came back to win it 15-14.

Wow. McGwire bunted over the runner in the 9th. You would NEVER see that from a big bat nowadays.

I wish the Jays players of today would watch this video. After Alomars huge home run, you see the players being men, they line up and high five him as he comes in, and that's it! they act like they've been there before. Not doing all the silly antics they do these days like putting on a jacket and dancing around like girls (even in games when they're losing). Back then the players had intensity and maturity as well.

It’s so ironic that the commentators were talking about Eckersley and the back door slider to Gibson in 1988 that was a game-winning homer -then immediately Roberto Alamar does the same thing to the back door slider from Eckersley. Straight out of the park. The only difference was this was to tie the game.
