4th QTR crunch time and they’re talking about a substitute offensive lineman.......because at that time it was a a difference in the game. Joe Jacoby was the main reason they were finally able to pass the ball down the field on that drive. These announcers today would have been talking about the quarterback controversy or something.

As amazing the Skins were the previous year I remember the divisional playoffs against the 49ers as very frustrating because the breaks just didn't happen for us. 1990 & 1992 loses against the 49ers Rypien needed to carry the skins. The fumble between him and Mitchell that could have given us the lead late in the game is one of the more frustrating playoff games that I can remember. This 49ers team easily could have been beaten. That the beginning of the end of the Redskins after that game. The Redskins limped into the playoffs with 2 straight losses and then the upset win over the Vikings. Once the Redskins lost that game Joe Gibbs retired, the Redskins would flame out after a 2-0 start and Mark Rypien would be gone from the team the next year. The "Posse" of receivers was gone and the Redskins won only 1 playoff game with Norv Turner and 1 with Joe Gibbs back in 2005.

Toghest loss as a redskins fan, but the 49ers deserved to win, they were the better team even when they made a lot of mistakes that kept the redskins in the game. It is amazing how the redskins were able to compete and almost win it at the end, would have been a miracle if the redskins had won this game. It was a bad game overall, the field was bad, it was a rainy day, a lot of mistakes by both teams. My biggest victory as a redskins fan came the year before when they won the Súper bowl and this game was the toughest loss because by all that happened I though they were going to win at the end with all the momentum and confidence they had during the last quarter.
@cesarmedina70809 ай бұрын
Wouldn't have been a miracle. Redskins were underrated. They were the defending super bowl champions, a couple of plays from being 11-5, won a playoff game and nearly beat the 49ers and did it all with a ton of injuries to a lot of key players. If they hadn't had so many injuries they might have been right back in the super bowl.
@nyjin084 жыл бұрын
These two dominated the league together for so long that it's a shame they didn't play more huge playoff games against one another. Sure, you had the 83 NFC title game but in my opinion that's not nearly enough. I don't even count the 90 and 92 divisional round games because those are akin to preseason games for these franchises. As a Jet fan I perceive a divisional round game as a gift from God, but for these teams and their fans a trip to the promised land was expected on an annual basis.
@TheLocalLt4 жыл бұрын
That doesn’t mean a divisional round game can be dismissed, given the right circumstances the true super bowl could happen in a divisional round game. No it’s not quite as epic as a conference championship but given the right matchup it can be close. Remember Cowboys-Packers in 2014? As great as the NFC title game was, everyone remembers “did dez catch it”, the same can’t be said about the packers botched onside kick in the nfc title game. Even a wild card game can be very hyped if the circumstances are right.

Summerall and Madden in the booth (best pair ever) and battle of the Joes (Gibbs and Montana) since Gibbs had different QB’s and Montana has 2 different coaches in their 12 year rivalry. This was last year for both Joes in these rosters (although Gibbs came back to Washington in the Aughts). And although I liked first generation artificial turf unlike most people, these two teams always battled on natural grass which Madden loved. What great teams they had those years but damn did the crowds suffer look at the kickoff no one even standing! For a playoff game kickoff! From like 88 to 2000 the candlestick crowds were pathetic. Full of all the bandwagon fans and that’s where the whine and cheese came from. It was that era. I can’t tell u how many times I was told to sit down while cheering a big play. At a football game! But when they got real bad in 04 to when they got relevant again those crowds came back and it was a great atmosphere at the stick. But those late 80s and 90s crowds were wine and cheese.

I usually would never question Joe Gibbs' play-calling, but when the Redskins had that first red-zone chance following the Steve Young fumble, I think they got too pass-happy. They had a VERY good offensive line and a running back who could get the job done. I don't care that Byner had that unfortunate fumble back in the 1987 AFC Championship Game, I would have given the ball to him AT LEAST twice in that "Goal-to-go" scenario. Just like the stat showed, the Redskins scored TD's in those situations 36% of the time in 1992, a HUGE decrease from 1991 when they won Super Bowl XXVI. I know that I would have had at least two TE's in there on each play.

31 straight days, with some rain in it. I remember it very well... I couldn't stand Summeral & Madden "Doom & Gloom" Madden was Doom, and Summeral was Gloom Their voices calling our games against an NFC East team were like nails on a chalkboard, and usually meant a loss for us and more than likely a controversial loss. So many classic games that were played in that shithole that was Candlestick Park. Hate to see games of this magnitude decided by fumbles and errors made because of field conditions, but that is football. /End Rant

Never heard the Forty Niners, nor the Faithful whining about the frostbite in Minny, and Lambeau, nor the fans in Mile High throwing snowballs. Home field advantage goes to the team with the better regular season records (that includes wins at home and on the road) and by advancement in the post season. Hate to see busters complaining about mud, yet ignoring the unserviced, worn out Astroturf laid over concrete, with bald spots around the league back then...
@pardonmedoug8863 жыл бұрын
@@kidmack1121 Maybe I ignored the astroturf over concrete because it has no context in this game. Great argument though. Candlestick was a dump, that's it. Good day.

@@pardonmedoug886 Your criticism didn't have anything to do with the outcome of this game either. The Forty Niner's playoff home and away record during the Dynasty was something like 25 - 1 I seriously doubt that your "dump" label had anything to do with their overwhelming success at the Stick. Steve Young was never really a good big game QB, he was great in the Super Bowl they won a couple of years later but that was against an inferior opponent. His turnovers in this game almost lost them the game, and his turnovers the following week cost them against the Cowboys. It's kind of a shame Seifert never put Montana in. I will always believe they would have beaten the Cowboys if Montana was in there.
@TheDeadlyYears5 ай бұрын
On the hundred. That Dallas dynasty never happens if Joe plays in that game. Steve Young couldn’t handle the bigger games. Steve’s Super Bowl win was bought. That team was never the same after 1994. Dallas got that ridiculously absurd trade Minnesota trade and the 49ers gifting them Charles Haley. Then the 49ers giving Steve Young the job was crazy and the icing on the top for Dallas. Dallas had way too much luck all at once.
