One of my favorite generations of Dodge Dakota right here folks.
Came in after a failed distributor cap replacement, and now she’s gonna get the works!

Just revived an '88 Gran Fury cop car that hadn't been run in years. Few hours of work swapping parts, soaking of the cylinders, cleaning the carb, 5 gallons of gas with a high level of fuel system cleaner...she fired up. Ran like trash for about 10 minutes, then started running well enough to drive around a back pasture (at a ranch) and discover it has a "Sure-grip" axle. One of the better free cars I've gotten

I have a 95 dakota that I just got as a project truck. It's beautiful. The previous owner tried to play mechanic and now the cooling system doesn't work. I was going to send it to a local shop but it would be way more fun to see you fix it 🤔. Lol I love this channel and what you do so that would be so cool!

Yes, a Dakota with a 318 V-8 and a 5-speed manual is exactly what I’d want. But this V-6 sounds nice!

I’ve got a 1987 Dakota I bought new with 87k miles always garage kept and all original. Looks and drives like new except for an intermittent problem I’ve been chasing for a few years. I have to feather the gas pedal when I take off or it will stall and if you’re going down the highway it feels like you’re pulling a trailer against the wind it starts bucking. It will do this for a few days and then it clears up. I’ve always ran super unleaded and non ethanol gas in it. I’ve been going to take it to a shop but every time I go to do that it is running fine. I’ve been waiting for it to do it again so I can let them see what I’m talking about. It’s also got the 3.9 v6 but it’s the only year with a carburetor. I’m at a loss of what it could be. The truck even looks brand new no one believes me it’s got the original paint job on it. I don’t want to get rid of it I love the damn thing.

When I was in high school, I learned the hard way that you should never get the ignition system wet at a car wash. I had an old 1965 f100 352ci that I loved. I went to a self-wash and got carried away with the high-pressure foam while I detailed the engine bay and when I went to leave... I couldn't. lol I traced it back to the cap and rotor (no spark). When I pulled the cap there was actually soap suds still in it.

Just started following your content. Great to see that one back up and running. Not too many around up in Alaska anymore. They were solid trucks and people ran them to death usually. I ran an 89 Dakota as my first truck in high school as well as my family had both early and mid 90’s dokotas and s10s. Lots of good times. Happy new year!

Another fine specimen that would be worth probably double up here anywhere in the salt belt. They have a much worse reputation for horrible rusting issues than either S10 or Ranger no matter how much you take care of them. Don't see that many maybe for that reason.

I haven't really even seen the newer Dakotas here. I think people drove the heck out of 'em. Kinda like S10 and S10 Blazers, they are VERY rare. Lemme just put it this way: If you ever play "Slug Bug" with a Dakota, you will arrive at your destination with nary a mark on your face. 😅 Good job Jay!!

In the US those warranty void stickers do not mean anything. You can open that up and they still have to honor the warranty. You just need to have all the original parts. That is why the rotor and cap have the stickers. They don't want you putting 3rd party caps and rotors on while it is still under the warranty. and why would you? if it breaks. take it back. Love the content man, congrats on the 100k. Been subscribed for years. Remember when you hit 10k!

My hourly isn’t even half of that, and my diagnostic fee is completely waved if you have me do the repair too. I could have came to that conclusion (if that’s even what’s wrong) for less then an hours labor. I sure hope you get it sorted out though.

Got a question truck you're working on in this video I have the same exact twin I have a shitload of brand new parts in it and I still cannot give it to start up is not sending some kind of signal to the fuel pump to turn the fuel pump on and I turn around and say fuel to the engine act like it's got no fuel going to it

These trucks are bad for PCM failures, and ignition failures. If your truck has the tilt steering wheel, pull the covers off and check the wires around the key switch. Give them a wiggle and see if anything changes.

You never set your timing dude. I was waiting for that part of your precise tuning . But you let me down.😢. I’m thinking that you don’t know how. Why would you replace a distributor & not sync it to the engine.? Only reason I can see would be knowledge is missing you are misleading all your subscribers in my eyes.
@MXguy95
@MXguy95 Ай бұрын
The “magnum” engines don’t have fully adjustable timing. It’s computer controlled like a later vortec smallblock. Just ensure your at TDC before pulling the distributor, and reinstall the new in the same location. You can only get a few degrees of adjustment out of it. And with that you can set it by ear, the pcm handles the rest of your timing on these.
@normstjean2758
@normstjean2758 Ай бұрын
Sorry for being rude not my nature , I totally agree with you about timing not adjustable , but if you look at your scanner there will be a distributor sync process, this is very important to perform as if your off with alignment of new distributor you will get a very rough running engine. By syncing your distributor this is used for injector control . This was a must to do every time distributors were removed. Simple to do with a scanner or a DVOM. Cheers Brother!!
