Duke fans cannot possibly understand the level of obsession surrounding this team in the state of Indiana. 4 of our starters were born and raised in Indiana while Duke might as well be a professional team with their players from all over the country. This Indiana team was made up of champions, and it represented the passion of all Hoosiers. One game doesn't change that.

Duke lost only two games that year and both were when Bobby Hurley had a broken foot. I'd put that Duke team up against any team in college bastketball history. To this day, I haven't seen a coach tear open the officials the way Coach Knight did during the second half - and that was during a timeout. Too bad the title game was a dud - Duke cruised against the Fab 5. Thanks for putting this up on KZbin...

All but one starter for Indiana was fouled out of the game. Personal Fouls called: Alan Henderson - 5 Calbert Cheaney - 5 Damon Bailey - 5 Greg Graham - 5 Chris Reynolds - 4 Matt Nover - 3 Eric Anderson - 2 Jamal Meeks - 2 Todd Leary - 2 In the 1991-92 season the Hoosiers averaged 18 fouls called against them per game while forcing 23 foul calls on their opponents per game. They averaged 28 free throw attempts to 18 for their opponents per game. Indiana was called for 33 fouls to Duke's 18 in this game, with Duke shooting 42 free throws to Indiana's 16. Indiana got whooped in this game...by the refs. Absolutely terrible referring. That being said, Indiana almost had a lead of 10 points. Would have been 12 at the half had Anderson knocked down a jumper, but he missed and Duke cut it to 5 at half. Ouch. But still, the calls were terrible. @@brianarbenz1329 I understand the skepticism, but it was obvious even in game, and your eyes don't lie. I realize I'm biased, but I have talked to neutral fans who feel the same thing, especially those who watched at the time. Blatant and known animosity between night and the official, and one official is old that's needed to dramatically impact a game especially when it comes to fouls. Look at the foul disparity, especially earlier in the game. They wanted Duke to get through, and Valentine certainly didn't want Knight to get through.

@teddyboy3120 Indiana was on the verge of blowing out Duke late in the first half and early in the second half until the officials called seven fouls on Indiana in a five minute span, putting Indiana's two best players on the bench so Duke could make its run.
@ujohnlynch234110 ай бұрын
@teddyboy3120 Indiana was up double digits late in the first half. Duke couldn't stop them. The only reason Duke caught up and took the lead was because the officials began calling fouls left and right on Indiana while letting Duke get away with bumping and hacking. Indiana's best player, Damon Bailey, was called for two fouls in a four second span barely two minutes into the second half. After the second one, he was hacked going up for his own shot. Official Ted Valentine, who disliked Knight, immediately called a technical on Knight. At the next TO Knight asked another official why he was called for a T, "What did I say?". The other official said Valentine called the T because the Indiana bench jumped up after seeing Bailey get hacked on his shot with no foul call. That's biased officiating.

I believe this was the last season where the clock didn't stop after a made basket in the final minute. The ending sequence would have been interesting - Nover's three went through with around 7 seconds still to play but because the game clock ran during the 5-count all they had to do was basically get it inbounds. Back then if you were down two possessions late in the game with no timeouts you had to score with over 5 seconds remaining otherwise the opponent didn't even have to inbound.

I was furious after this game, but I've gotten a bit more philosophical about it over the years. The stat every announcer pointed out that season for Indiana was "they make more free throws than their opponents attempt." And that was the game, for all intents and purposes.

I remember it being a really bitter letter, Knight didn't have balls enough to deliver it himself, he had someone else do it. I think Bobby Knight is one of the top 5 coaches in NCAA history, but he really is a jerk in many ways, no reason to treat someone like that, I mean they were in battles together at West Point, Coach K acknowledged Knight many, many times and gave him credit for a lot of his own success. In my mind growing up in ACC country this Indiana team didn't have a shot to win. This Duke team is an all time team. When you think about even comparing Duke to the UNLV team the previous year, Duke was the more talented. Grant Hill was a transcendent NBA talent and Laettner the most accomplished college player of all time. If Indiana would have won it would have been a historic upset. Im a Duke hater btw but Im honest

IU fans just shutup. Duke played a poor game and beat your best game of the season. The FT disparity is because Duke had rim attackers....Hurley with his drives, Laettner, Hill guys, Davis, Lang. Those guys go hard to the cup. How about IU defends without fouling. If it makes you feel any better you all got revenge in 2002 and us Duke fans could point out some suspect calls against us in that game but we wont, we lost that game to a gritty IU team that yr. The IU fans crying about refs this game are embarrassing their own program. Have some class.

Duke fans... just shut up. Admit the game was rigged. You don’t shoot 42FT and have 4 players foul out if it’s called fairly. IU could’ve beaten any team in the nation that year.

Id like to remind you that you do have the right to remain silent. Anything you say as a Duke fan can and will be used against you in the court of law.

@@tonikesterbulger1048 you are probably one of the 8 bots that liked the one guy's comment calling me an idiot. Classy. You all can come up with conspiracy theories all you want and have more likes on your comments than mine all you want (the door of people who don't like me goes way beyond the corner and around the block.....so no big deal to me) but it doesn't change that Duke won that game 81-78 and went on to win the 1992 National Championship 🏆
