Why do motocross bikes come with kickstands? I do like this design that can be unbolted from the swingarm without the steel nub that hangs of the frame of most production bikes.

I bought a WR500 when I was 22 for $500 and put about $2000 of parts into it. What a labor of love... I had the head shaved and ported, header, KX500 carb, etc.. Clutch basket impossible to find. Do not forget to replace the crank seals to see the bike's true power potential. Shell adjustment swingarm design does not suit the torque produced by this bike. YZ250 swingarm mod was ideal for being lighter than the Deltabox and also threaded for nut-bolt adjustment. Suspension not designed for weight of bike. A set of forks and rear shock can really wake the bike up. Clutch was smoothest I've ever used on an older bike. One-finger pull. Impressive really. Very fun machine, and very particular. Unlike anything, really. Hillclimb and woods were its strength for me. Also they sound meaner than the CR and KX because they are a long-stroke motor and therefore make it sound throatier. CR and KX will take this bike for a walk any day though. Buyer's guide: check clutch basket, crank seals, compression, and swingarm for damage where chain adjusts.

But I absolutely love what you stand for for this Industry and market and I don't think there is anyone as compassionate as you and telling the past. Ken I give you 2 thumbs up but it just . . . There is quite a few of these bikes in New Zealand and Australia that have been rebuilt. I bought one 4 years ago and fully rebuilt it. The suspension was rebuilt and the suspension guru in NZ said the shock was very high quality and said it didn't new any aftermarket parts as he could modify it very easily. As for the forks I had gold valves added. I also change the springs to suit my body weight and that made a big difference. I also fitted a Lectron carb which made a big difference to the bike and increase the fuel range too. The best thing about these bikes is when you are going through a bog and then have a steep up hill climb to get out, the motor just pulls like a tractor with it's huge torque and you just slowly wind the throttle and haul yourself out. Long live Big Bore 2 Strokes!

I had the choice of the wr250 or 500. I took the 250 & won a heap including a variety of events from mx to cross country & enduro, & for a few seasons. It was faster around a track & lighter yet super reliable aswell. It was the best bike I've ever owned to this day..but I'd still love the big girl as I did have an IT490 before the wr250. It was a tough choice but the correct one at the time..but now in 2022 it was the incorrect one ha ha. Nice

I always wanted a YZ or an IT490 in the late '80s/early '90s. I read from an unverifiable, but seemingly well informed source (the Internet) that these were YZ490 motors in the YZ250 frames and that the model was put into production to empty their stock of 490 motors. I would be interested to hear opinions in either direction. This specimen looks BRAND NEW to me. I still don't understand why they discontinued the ITs, especially given that the KDXs were made for 20 more years, but so be it. The compound looks great, Ken!

In Canada, the last year of yellow yz s was 1981 . Then red/ white in 1982 . I had a 81 yz125h , rode it into the ground, finally sold it with cracked cases, the cases had cracks all the way around each crank main bearing ; it would start & run 5 min. Then foul from motor oil getting into combustion chamber. I took it apart, cleaned it up, ran it again, 5 min. Then cleaned it again, sold it for $400 & made sure the buyer knew what he was buying , no deception.never deceive .

1992 WR500 what an amazing machine. I love your outfit Captain America wow! That clutch is amazing how it pulls in so easy for you you got that right. That's an extremely rare find I've only seen a few and the few that I've seen have always been on TV and it's always been like supercross riders the best ones too out of all the videos that I have watched getting up to a year now that spike is amazing. Mind-blowing Kaplan psychos is number one best New England motorcycle museum in the world❤

If Steve McQueen were still alive this would be his bike. Air cooled, big bore and bad ass. Just something to be said about an air cooled beast that sits in a more modern frame, seat and looks

Bradshaw shocked everyone when he holeshotted millville and led many laps. I didn't know they used the 250 frame. Good idea

That WR is a beauty! The WR200 is a great bike as well, I never knew a WR 500 even existed, a 500cc 2 stroke thats aircooled is amazing, I have a 1995 DT200R and a 1987 DT200L here in Canada, I just finished rebuilding and restoring the 200R and the 200L is next in line

Before they offered the wr490 I made my own on my 1987 . I lowered the compression, ported and polished the jug and piston and added a lighting coil . I added the pro circuit pipe and a bigger tank and rode the hell out of it.

I am late to the party, but OMG I love this bike. While other kids in high school were into their sports, I was obsessing over bikes Motocross Action and other mags. I distinctly remember this bike in one of they buyer guides. (Probably still got the mag in storage). Thought it was cool then - it’s so much more so today. Air cooled big-bore on ‘modern’ suspension and geometry. Love it. A bucket-list bike for me. Hope the new owner is enjoying it.
