I raced and trail rode an 86 CR500 for quite a few years. Torque ported with a 2 lb flywheel weight on it made it docile on the trails as long as I kept it out of the main jet. However if cracked WFO one better be pointing where you want to go, the thing was a beast! Someone once asked me when it hit the powerband. I told him if you could hear it running it WAS in the powerband..

A CR500 (or RM, KX, YZ) with a paddle tire in the dunes is untouchable! It takes a bit to get used to the bike wiggling all the time in the sand (unnerving at first), but you you can move through the dunes faster than anything else because you have a ton of power and a single track. Friends on banshees or a quadzilla would try to keep up, but not even close.

way back in the late 80's , when I was young, I arrived at the track late and as a result I had to run my practice laps with the open class bikes. I managed to fall behind this CR 500 during the practice. I was on a RM 125 and this 500 started pounding me with this roost to my body and bike that I had never experienced before. A couple laps of that Sh*t was enough. I decided that I had plenty of practice lol! A beast for sure!

Danny "Magoo" Chandler would frequently hole shot Trans USA races on his 1982 LOP Racing Honda CR480 starting in 3rd gear... and that was when they only had a 4 speed gear box! And I mean hole shot by 50' to 75' ever time!! First time I saw him do it was at Mid Ohio, one click up into 2nd then one more click up into 3rd and bam, blew away the pack by 75' into turn one. I about died watching that, what balls, har!! Those were the days:)

You can build a 4 stroke that will match its power all through the rpm range. Not just wide open. You just need deep pockets. And a competent builder who understands flow and valve float issues. Not stock tho!! 😂🤣😂

I started racing in about "74" to "81ish" and wasn't around anything but four strokes until I started racing. Elsinore was my first bike. I got to believing two strokes ruled....until I bought a single four-stroke 500 Yamaha and rode it through the woods in Colorado 20 years later with that supertrap exhaust echoing and that four stroke easily pulling hills. It got me turned on to four strokes in dirt. Nothing like the echo of a thumper grunting through the woods.

I bought a bone stock 1989 CR500 in 1993 not ridden much, person I worked with was in a pinch for money and got it for $400 bucks, my first modern mono shock bike coming from bombers , he had geared it for a small local track and it would do about 65 mph wide open, I tried that track and one lap I was exhausted riding my new to me CR500... 3rd gear hole shot and 4th gear only around whole track holding on for dear life, twitchy , tank slap and wanted to toss me off the back.. never rode it at a track again... I lived way out in the desert at the time, and made a casual desert bike out of it.. I had a 20 mile loop of mountains and 2 tracks, I geared it to keep up with a buddies Husky 500 at the time, I should have been dead many times riding it blazing dirt roads at 100 mph.. It flat does not want to turn at those speeds , still docile enough for slower rocky stuff with out slipping the clutch... I rode it for many years /miles and it was great, 20:1 golden spectro and never had to re-ring it... Just never ponied up for a Scotts steering stablizer which it really needed , sold it back in 2003 to a person at work and he blew it up first outing, come to find out someone told him to run synthetic 2 stroke oil at 60:1 and melted it... I do not comment much, but THANK YOU for bringing back fond memories and THAT feeling again, it just made me overshare stirring up all that fun back in the day now that I am an old broke down man... Much respect for anybody who rides one of these, I just never had the skill to do so .... Hard to believe the bike today is 31 years old......
