Thank you so much for uploading this. Lived in Camden forever and it’s an important part of our history. God bless these old boys who worked so hard building and maintaining London for all.

Excellent documentary, thanks for the upload. I found it quite moving as I'm currently homeless and have lived a similar life to a lot of these men i.e. no roots so I can relate. I caught a sense of the genuine hearts of the staff who appeared to have a real emotional investment in their roles, a lot of good souls there, tenants and staff.

A house that has saved many many souls from self destruction. Every town should have one for those less fortunate than others. Walk a mile in another man’s shoes before casting judgment

Thought it was a documentary about that big tower block on Margate seafront for a moment (also called Arlington House)
@kieranlane4428 Жыл бұрын
The man who appears at 5:35 looks identical to the Arlington resident who appeared in an elderly poverty documentary a several years later which is also on KZbin. Only here he is called "Lou" and in the other documentary was called "Fred". If it is the same man in the other documentary he had gotten a lot frailer and made one final trip to his childhood village.

There is a similar place in Fieldgate Street in Whitechapel, I think that they were originally built by Lord Rowton.

Proof that addiction mental health zero mental health or support in the NHS even then, it is non-existent now, since covid getting in to a dr is like making an appointment to see god, in fact you would be more successful in achieving the latter, All these men needed was a good support network in the community, good treatment options, just a spark of hope, such a shame, and no doubt has troubled their families hereditary ever since.

Never lived in The big house as it was called , but knew "many" that did over my drink / drug years ( now 20+ years clean). It just takes the right triggers at a bad time in your life to end up in olaces like this. NEVER think that these people then or now, have always lived this lifestyle, they are just struggling & drink / drugs helps them survive day to day. For any woman thats reading this, you can now see sexism at its base value !! A woman would never be allowed to sleep on streets long term, she will always be ve offered help as she will be classed as "vulnerable" yet males are not. Most of the females i knew during my drink / drug years spent very few nights in a hostel before being offered accomodation . Yet men spend years in hostels ( never mind years on the street) before being offered any "real" help. Seem sexism only exsists one way
