Nothing ever changes in the end does it. We've come full circle after fifteen years of Tory rule, we're right back to this as normal again. But now it's even worse.we have people living from food banks, and epidemic of drug use that dwarves the heroin of the 80s and a social attitude that would make Thatcher proud. Everyone looking over each others shoulder to see if they're getting something, and a total denial of any social problems before the wave of migration at the turn of the century. Look how people are living then, I remember it! No-one had migration to blame then🤷 it's government serving their own greed that's the problem.

@@Cloughjordan23 The 70s were better in many ways but maybe that depended on where you lived. I remember a great community spirit where everyone looked out for each other, local shopkeepers who knew everyone by name and nobody going hungry even if we didn't have much with neighbours taking meals to the less fortunate. The 80s is where it started going downhill IMO with Thatcher telling everyone to get on their bikes to find a job as unemployment reached record levels, the beginning of breaking up families and increasing homelessness as people headed for the big cities, especially London.

Living as a student in Manchester in the early to mid 1990s it was a 'little like that' living in squalor and when I arrived in London to work it wasn't much better, living in some dives (the Y.T.S. was one for a couple of months) but I slowly worked my way out of this substandard living. I mean it's crap but if you've got little to no money what can you do ? No middle class parents, just my mother and she was secretarial due to bad life choices but she did her best and cared which goes a long way.

Having watched documentaries like this here on our ABC in Australia during the ‘80’s, I became aware of the social issues surrounding people my own age. Due to this, I viewed Thatcher’s Britain during the 1980’s as extremely harsh & unfair. However, the music coming out of England was creative & mind-blowing! Pop, Punk, Synth-pop, New-Wave, New Romantics, Ska, etc. I’ve since met many Poms who have migrated here to Australia, who were in their teens/early 20’s during the ‘80’s & they never had to deal with issues like this, because they had parents, education & homes, etc. Even now, I feel sorry for these young, vulnerable parents and wonder how their life panned out. 😢

Married? You do realise marriage doesn’t guarantee a husband who isn’t lazy or adds to a woman’s issues. I agree though that to protect unborn children women should be on some form of contraception until they meet the threshold to ensure a safe environment for their kids without being fully reliant on the state. And if someone does have a child outside these parameters then it should be adopted out to people who can’t have their own kids. Sounds harsh but I just think it’s selfish having kids just because *you* want them then spending your entire life leaching off the state and having countless kids whilst providing quality care to none of them. It’s a pattern I saw generations repeat whilst working for a government welfare department. The kids are frequently dirty and hyper and you see them grow into young adults and just repeat that same pattern. It’s an epidemic and tell me those kids wouldn’t have had a better future if not only were they wanted but they were *also* supported properly to meet their potential to have a better life than their parents.

I could have been one of the children in this doc. The difference is my parents got married (mum was 19, my dad was 22), and they made sure there was a stable roof over everyone's head BEFORE they remotely contemplated bringing children into it! My parents couldn't afford to stay in London either, so they had to bite the bullet and move further out. My mums always said, "The 2 things you get for free in this country is education and contraception, and no sod wants to use either of them". And its true! That young woman in the white "i had a miscarriage because i had to walk up so many stairs." Why on earth are you getting pregnant again??? Its always someone elses responsibility. "Well, the council hasnt done anything. Its wrong the way they treat us". Its like these people are born, have their parents raise them, and then expect the government to carry on where their parents leave off! Wasn't such a problem in Oxford, England, for these types of families in 1985. If you got pregnant and needed social housing you would go to the council and get a set of keys for a house almost straight away. However, Oxford's huge increase in immigration from the 1990s and onwards soon changed all that, and now, it is almost as bad as London.

The housing crisis of 1985 was certainly improved by the massive increase in the population.

The system was broken when this film was made and now, in November 2024, the situation is a million times worse. Irrespective of the millions of illegal migrants flooding into the country now and swelling the numbers needing housing, our current population (right across the country), are being preyed upon by unscrupulous people - often foreigners who are landlords and taking advantage of the gaping holes in legislation that allows them to house homeless people in properties which are simply not fit for human habitation. The country needs a shakeup of monumental proportions, starting with these scum landlords who are getting rich on the backs of the misery of others, swiftly followed by an enema to replace the politicians who are not fit for purpose.

It’s our politicians over decades that keep on creating their shit show over and over again with their policies and legislation that serves them and never the British public . Will we ever learn 😢

I don't get that woman with the six day old at all. When you are already in poverty with a toddler, why in the world would you get pregnant again?! I don't care that this was 40 years ago, surely people still had common sense NOT to lay down and have kids!! 🙄🤷
