Rotaries are THE MOST reliable internal combustion engine design. What killed these engines was the massive amounts of emissions equipment to try to keep a motor from the early 70s compliant with modern standards. If they just used a premix reservoir instead of a standard oil circulation from crankcase as internal cooling/burning, then NONE of the carbon buildup problems would have occurred. It just adds an extra step to owning the vehicle. You fill the tires with air, don't you? How about gas for your fuel tank? Water and Coolant for your radiator? Change your differential and transmission fluids? Why not just have a 2 gal premix fill that needs to be refilled every XXX miles? Since the average premix ratio of the OMP is somewhere around 100:1 (Fuel to Oil), that means that you would only have to fill your reservoir every 8-10 fillups at the gas station. The same time that you should check/fill your tire pressures. People are stupid. Rotaries are dying because of moronic owners, plain and simple.

RGHTBrainDesign Lol.. youre being sarcastic right?
@RGHTBrainDesignDrive
@RGHTBrainDesignDrive 9 жыл бұрын
When you consider the dozens to hundreds of designers who refined this engine design vs. the tens of thousands who refined a reciprocating engine, then no, I'm not being sarcastic. Simplicity is key. Why use hundreds of parts when you only need a few? Material choice is the main downside of the rotary..coolant seals are the weak link, not Apex Seals.

People that clown rotary engines don't know a thing about them and are just bashing them because of trolls saying they aren't reliable. I've had several rx7 fd3s and none of them were a problem because they were taken care of properly??? IG Dicnick_r35
@KoopaXross
@KoopaXross 5 жыл бұрын
Very true. It has already been proven in a study, somewhere online, that rotaries have less friction than pistons. There's a graph showing the frictions at different rpms. Rotary is always lower. Less friction = longevity. Only maintenance for these, opposed to piston cars, is premixing. You don't need to be a mechanic whatsoever.

That's a nice clean RX7. I have a white '94 FD (original owner) with light, but fully reversible to stock, modifications -- under drive pulley, intake and cat-back exhaust. Basically, it is Pettit Racing's base modification package. I kept all of the original parts in case I ever want to go back to original. Anyway, I just wanted to compliment you and your RX-7! Nice review!! :thumbs up: If I were King at Mazda, I'd bring back the RX-7 with a 3 (preferably 4) rotor non-turbo Wankel. Our RX-7s get so damn hot and with the rat's nest of vacuum lines and other necessary crap to run the turbos, it makes for a mechanic's worst nightmare. Not that mine has been unreliable. In fact, it's been great, but it's not easy to work on.
@gav240z
@gav240z 9 жыл бұрын
tscooter22 I agree a 3 rotor non-turbo would be nice or just a modern turbo that spool super fast and doesn't require the complexity of the twin sequential set up with the vacuum hoses and solenoids. I actually think they are not that hard to work on compared with other cars of the same era, eg: 300zx, 3000GT etc.. Standard the engine bay is a bit cramped but everything is relatively accessible. A big problem for North American, AU and UK market cars was the pre-cat system, it added additional heat, the JDM cars didn't have the pre-cat and didn't suffer as much in terms of reliability (Version III FD3S owner Type RB here). Mine came with Twin Oil coolers stock also. Which they really should of all had standard.

That's so true. The mid class Japanese sports cars of the 90s totally stomps on the crap being sold nowadays. This RX-7, The Supra MK4, The MR2 turbo, The Nissan 300 ZX TT. Look at those quasi exotic looking gems and look at the garbage now. No comparison. The 90s, car designers had vision and creativity.

People who say rotary engines are "unreliable", "drink too much fuel" and "consume tons of oil" need to get a few facts straight. I have owned a FD for 7 years now. I have tracked it vigorously on road courses, daily driven it for a little and just beaten the snot out of it on canyons. Granted I TAKE CARE OF THE ENGINE and TUNED IT CORRECTLY, I am still on my original motor pulling strong compression. AVG 21mpg. My E39 M5 burns more oil than my FD; which required 1/4 quart every 1k miles.

also, the car has 2 identical turbos so you also would say it is its twin, if you would like pictures i could take a few right now, they are sitting on the floor right now waiting to get shipped to a new owner. Actually they are upgraded models of the stock ones, BNR Stage 3 ... so again it is a TWIN TURBO or sequential Twin Turbos, Mazda Themselves say Twin turbo

The oil pressure gauge spiked with rpm, but you can see that the coolant temp gauge was north of the mid point. If the coolant gauge ever goes north of the mid point in one of these cars, that's a sign that you should change to 4th and let it cool down.

He's correct when he says these turn heads everywhere you go. Every time I take mine out it certainly gets a lot of attention and it's a plain Silver colour not bling bling yellow (I really wanted a yellow 1 but couldn't find 1), the only draw back is every boy racer wants to take me on, just last night some guy in his Scooby-Doo was trying to egg me on, I usually just ignore them but you can feel people's eyes on you at stop lights. I bought 1 because I love them and they way they drive and always wanted a rotary powered rocket. The attention is a by-product of owning 1, even if you leave them stock and understated like I have.

+ChaChingU That's pretty high mileage. I would wait to find one with under 100000 miles or 140000 km, simply because that increases the chance of better maintenance. The Miata can last you over 200000 miles, but only if maintained well. It's a great car, but as with any car, you have to pay close attention to condition. They are the funniest things to drive and will never treat you wrong. Best purchase of my life.

No words about fuel economy? In Europe, fuel is expensive in these days. 1,50-1,60 Euro per litre.

Well of course an engine provides rotational motion to the wheels, but you don't understand why it's called a "rotary", more specifically, a Wankel Rotary. These engines don't have pistons like "other engines" and instead convert eccentric pressure into rotating motion instead of pistons doing the work... Also, fyi, diesel engines also don't have spark plugs unlike "other engines". Not all engines are the same, do some research and you'll see.

That license plate needs to be moved away from the radiator intake. As I said 2 years ago, what a beautiful RX7!
