I think the nsx looks a bit better. Could be because my dad had an rx7 and it was in the shop more than the garage when i was a kid so i might be biased. Also never been a big fan of bubbly body work. Regardless, the rx7 did rounded edges right.

That generation Mazda logo was intended to represent the eternal peace flame at the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan (Mazda's Worldwide HQ). I have made a study of Mazda history was unaware of the triangular logo in Doug's review. However the flame logo was replaced soon after by the familiar stylized 'M' logo we know now.

The overheat exhaust system was really to let you know not to park over dry, grassy areas...as those areas could (and did) catch on fire if you idled your RX-7 over them.

Buck - Actually the heat sensor only detects when the pre-cat gets too hot, not the entire exhaust system. The purpose of the pre-cat is to help heat up the main cat quicker so that it can start working a bit sooner after first starting up a cold engine. The problem is the damn thing could sometimes get red hot and often in as little as 30,000 miles the core would fuse into a solid mass choking off the exhaust system and robbing the car of all its power. This is why most RX7 owner, myself included, either gut the precat or replace it with a down pipe. And once you do this that light will never come on again because you will no longer have such extreme temperatures in that area. Anyway you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that its bad to have a red hot hunk of metal about two inches from your passengers left foot (also where the sensor is). And of course letting it get red hot leads to the core melting problem I mentioned above. I can’t really say if the engineers at Mazda were thinking about the dangers of parking in tall dry grass when they put in that heat sensor but I’m sure they may have been considering the possibility of some sort of fire.
@KutWrite
@KutWrite 5 жыл бұрын
The exhaust overheat warning is because the cat. caused some fires when the car was parked in dry brush. What you do if it comes on is ensure you're not parked over any flammable materials such as dry leaves. The headlight pop-up button is so you can clean the headlights, or if the motor breaks you can put them up manually and flip the button so they don't retract until you get the problem fixed. I had a '95 and ripped out the crummy Bose sound system. The supposed subwoofer was horrible & took up about 1/3 of the trunk. I notice your test car didn't have one, either. The car was fast and handled and stopped wonderfully on Texas ranch roads. I had the car up to 150 mph on Interstate 35. I ran out of guts before it did, though I felt stable and safe at that speed. It was definitely a date-melter!

@streetrage 4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha would have been great to see him review the version with the Bose acoustic submarine tubes 😂😂😂 that was def a cool/weird quirk. Man.. if have to disagree though, those things sounded amazing and produced more hard clean bass than probably any car of its time. I LOVED them. The tubes only came standard in certain models though, not all trims. Either Touring models only or whoever ordered them as an option, not sure, but they had 3 different audio trims.

As I recall, rotary engines get quite a bit hotter than traditional pistons. Not sure if it's the nature of the rotary, or if it's the higher RPMs they can withstand (maybe both lol), but my friend used to have one of the older models and had caused one or two (thankfully) small brushfires.

Had my Integra broken into about a month after buying it living in a very quiet neighbourhood in Australia where car thefts are far from a hugely common issue. So yeah, can confirm EVERYONE tries to steal Integras. You can also get into them with nothing but a screwdriver, the only thing that saves it from being stolen in a single minute is the immobiliser so do not park them somewhere where they can be towed or pushed down the road.

I was totally in love with this car’s looks back in 93’ (and still love it). Although, the early versions did not have a fin on the back which actually looked even better. More accentuating the clean design of this car. Funny to hear Doug gush over it exactly the same way I used to. I would love it even more in bright red no rear fin! Great car

I drove one of these beauties once in my lifetime when I was a valet attendant. It was red with beige leather seats all stock and in mint condition. The fact that it's a very rare car, e I complemented the owner and we had a chit chat for a few minutes about it. This was back in 2008. It was an automatic but it didn't matter because these cars even back 11 years ago were rare to see on the streets. Most of my co workers probably had no clue what this was back then. But 90s Japanese cars have always been my thing. And I think that's why the owner was very charismatic and nice and even talkative to me because I instantly complimented him on his ride. And it was an elder gentlemen. He was a man who was intro his Rx7 FD and made sure of it.

@@IGamingStation The market. In the 80s/90s the market and economy were really good. Big tech and automobile boom. Car makers had multiple sports cars for all price ranges, and especially: coupes. Coupes aren’t so popular now because people don’t have as much money for even a cheap sport coupe, would rather make the possibly single car they can afford one that can carry their family. Even if they can afford two their spouse may need their own. SUVs are unfortunately all the rage. There are *less* sports cars to choose from, they don’t make new and varied platforms as often either. Hence why the Nissan Z has looked the same 2003-2020. Challengers, camaros etc. manufacturers are not confident.

I had an 1985 non turbo Targa, wow what a car, it was my first RX7, and everytime I drove it I couldnt believe the nimbleness, the power and joy of driving it... The problem is that NOBODY, not even the dealers who sold these cars knew anything about the Rotary so you basicly became your own mechanic/expert as I did by reading up, watching youtube videos, joining RX7 clubs, etc... The biggest thing about the Rotary engine is that the weigt to power is phenomenal, they even use the 13b in PWC conversions, there is also another rotary version in Japan that has another rotor attached to the 2 rotors that came with this car, which some people have bought from Japan and stuck it into their RX7's making their cars into ashphalt melters... But the biggest problem outside of the mechanical stuff inside the engine is that it is a GAS HOG, you need the revs to make the power and that eats gas.... LOTS OF GAS.

My Rx7 set the ground underneath on fire. The exhaust, and its "thermal reactor" can get ridiculously hot. A stretch of the exhaust was glowing red. Thats when the ivy underneath burst into flames. Rotaries can put out some heat! Sharp looking car though. And if you like engines, and mechanics, a rotary engine is totally fascinating; A dead end , as far as engine evolution, but really cool.

Yeah, that was what surprised me last year when i bought a FD RX7. I have heard that they tend to spend more time in the mechanic shop then on the road, but i've only had to change so far was the cooling liquid cause it was 50% full. Meanwhile my BMW 550i has been to the mechanic 3 times this year alone. So yeah, they seem pretty reliable so far. Next step is to get a Veilside body kit and some minor engine/performance and cooling upgrades and it's gonna be a beast.

But the engine was a beast with the Iceman Intake AEM Brembo brakes and few other parts like Jackson racing, Skunk2 Type R exhaust, etc. That car was his everything, next to me.

Mechanical "auto down" window switches were fairly common in the 90s for Asian brands. I had them in my 1986 Toyota Celica, my 1995 Nissan 200SX SE-R, my sister's 1991 Hyundai Scoupe. The pop-up headlight button was on every car I had with pop-up headlights: Honda Accord Coupe, 1986 Toyota Celica, et al. I'm pretty sure it's so you can clean the glass on the headlights. The strange size/shape of the panels in the trunk is to allow room for the "Bose Wave" sound system you got in the premium Grand Touring trim level. Lastly, this is one of the cars I lusted after when I was a kid in the 90s and saw it in the showroom. My dream color combo is the ultra rare silver with red leather or the "Montego Blue Mica" paint with tan leather, but only with the solid panel sunroof, not the moonroof. Yeah, I've put a lot of thought into this.

O-60mph in 4.9 seconds was top 10 for production cars for that era. Since the rotary has ports instead of valves, there is zero turbo lag which is a unique feel. The twin turbos are sequential. When the second turbo kicks in accelerating with full throttle you get quite a jolt. The touring model has an awesome Bose sound system though the bass tubes wrapping around the cargo space eat up some volume from an already small space. With low CG and 50:50 weight distribution, handling is excellent, too. Touring model has a sunroof. It was quite a fun ride.

They are twin turbos, and yes, they do lag. Because they are small though the stock turbos spool pretty quickly and hit somewhere around the 3k rpm mark. Second gear is where is pins you. You won’t feel that much in first.
@xnadave
@xnadave 6 жыл бұрын
t@@mbr05c I had a '93 and a '94. The turbos are not identical, which is always what is meant by manufacturers who mention "twin" turbos. This is not a "twin" turbo car. This is a "dual turbo" car. "Twin" typically applies to a V-configuration motor, where you have at least two exhaust manifolds, and thus more than one turbo to avoid miles of ridiculous piping. The point of the dual turbo (again, NOT "twin") setup on the RX is that the (much) smaller one spools faster to reduce lag. There is still significant lag, but, for a ~25 year old car, it's pretty impressive.

I always enjoy your videos but I wish you would put a little more thought and also a little more investigation into them. The reason the cargo compartment’s are in this car is because it didn’t meet up to crash test standards in the United States with rear seats. So they were eliminated in the United States versions and cargo compartments were put in in place. This went across the entire RX7 lineup, first generation through third. The reason the headlamp button is there to hold the headlamps up makes perfect sense when you drive one every day. When you have to make six or seven stops you don’t want to have to hear the headlights bang up and down so you push that button to hold them up so every time you get in the car all you have to do is turn the headlights on and you don’t have to listen to the zzzz bang,or wait for them. There are many other things on this car that makes sense when you drive it every day. As well as for a lot of the vehicles your review. The opinion of someone who is seeing a car for the first time and might never see it again isn’t really very valuable in terms of long term car ownership. I mean keep doing what you’re doing, but talk to the people that really know what it’s like to have the car for years on end and you’ll understand a lot of the features much more easily.

Karl Sachsenheimer Spot on. The RX7, ever since it's 1978 inception, have been awesome, although I didn't like the series 4 styling....

Agree. Very superficial and flippant. No mention of full aluminium body or Zagato-style bubble roof.

How does it only get a 6 out of 10 for importance? The RX-7 is a completely unique car in terms of looks and the fact it was the ONLY car with a rotary engine. Sheer mention of an RX-7 gets everyone i know excited beyond belief.. the RX-7 is a legendary car.

The headlight hold feature is for washing and maintenance of the lights. Certain fasteners under there can only be reached with them up, including the motors.

Also for colder climates so you can keep them up over night if its going to freeze and you want headlights the next morning.

Of all the cars I have owned, the two RX7s I owned (both older and newer body models) are still my favorites. As for why you can raise the lights without turning them on... it's for those of us who live in colder climates... it's so they don't get frozen in the down position when it snows (which they will).

Kicking myself for selling mine 20 years ago. I had the touring package, and it started having a bunch of problems with the turbos, the electrical harness was fried from the heat of the engine, and then it blew a radiator …. I just said hell with it and sold it for $4000 cash.

it would be a show of two older guys beating a kid, the first two try to learn about good cars and the last one trashes good cars because they have not cup holders, and has no sense of time ,he thinks that all cars were made in the same era,here´s a doug type comment" the model T would have more interest if they use bose speakers and cup holders, why didn´t they do that, even toyotas have them", regards

Amazing how the 94 RX7 had better styling than the newer RX8. 94 was the first year many car makers started going from boxy to sleek again. 94 3000GT was the same.
@brd7477
@brd7477 Жыл бұрын
You're correct in that '94 was the first year for the 2nd gen 3000GT, but I fail to see how it went from boxy to swoopy...... The design differences from the FC to the FD are extremely dramatic because it was very different structurally from the FC in addition to needing that 'updated 90s look.' The FC hit the USDM for MY 1985 and thus sported the boxy 80s architecture whereas the 3S debuted for the '91 MY. Huge differences in styling from 1985 to 1991.

I must bring back the first Need For Speed. Used to play in my old Acer 486 DX4 100 MHZ. You could drive a yellow RX7. Max speed was 157mph (faster than toyota's supra 155mph), but the slowest acceleration of all. Either way, it was an iconic car. I miss driving all of them: Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborguini Diablo, Chevrolet Corvette, Toyota Supra, Acura NSX, Mazda RX-7, Porsche 911 and Dodge Viper. Good memories. Great time.
