I do remember the Maxima being about the fastest Japanese sedan you could buy at the time though I don't have any sources to support that. But there were a few Japanese V6 players back then. Honda and Toyota V6 sedans weren't fast back then nor were Mitsubishis. So that leaves the Nissan Maxima. In the late 90's and early 00's I was able to drive various cars as I worked in car rental and I don't recall any other Japanese sedans being faster. It wasn't until the 2003 Accord was released that Honda had an answer for the speed of the Maxima and 2005 that Toyota released the newly redesigned Avalon although the Maxima kind of fits in between those two

Black on black leather with some things not working (sunroof, windshield washer pump) but runs fine. 200,000 miles on it and drove it 70 miles home without issue. Just needed to brighten up the headlights (yellow haze) and new LED bulbs, replace all 4 struts, and a tune up. Runs great! Straight body, decent paint, new tires and fresh fluids. Not bad for $2,500.

What won me over was the phenomenal handling and more modern features on the Audi A3 (2007). I was willing to take a hit on less interior room. The 1997 Nissan Maxima SMX is the one you really want. Yokohama-wrapped 17-inch MOMO wheels combine with Eibach Progressive Pro springs On Bilstein Shocks. Nissan 300ZX calipers with metal matrix pads squeeze cross-drilled ZX discs up front; the stock Maxima rear brakes also get the pad and drilling treatment. It has a full Stillen Cat-back exhaust, intake, upgraded ECU, Stillen strut brace, super short-shift kit, thicker anti-roll bars, a full Stillen body kit and spoiler. It puts out 230hp and 330NM of torque, hits 100 (62mph) in 7 seconds or so and goes onto a top speed of about 250km/h. 120 SMXs built of which only 20 were manuals.

And still in pretty good shape since it came from Florida. The midrange punch from the v6 is still pretty nice too, it doesn't feel worn out and it still shifts good too. The last 10 years or so I've bought and sold many cars. I reached a certain level that I can afford to buy and enjoy a short time and sell at a loss if necessary. During the 90's I drove an '82 Buick I resurrected from the junk yard. I struggled just to eat but still drooled over the cars I could not buy. My #1 cars were 1990's Acura, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti, Mazda. I bought an extremely clean 1997 Maxima GXE in October, with 44,000 miles, one owner. The owner was a farmer in N. Carolina who'd been dead for years. The car was sitting in a shed and needed to be sorted out mechanically. I spent thousands to get it right but had to put away for the winter. When I take it out in 5-6 weeks I will first get new tires. It has Goodyears with lots of tread but date code is 2007 and rot is present. I'm really excited and almost cannot wait. Just the 20 miles or so I drove it was a beautiful experience. Yet the car is so simple, and that's part of the beauty of it. This is one car I might keep instead of enjoying it a little and selling. I have no interest in Mercedes, BMW, Porsche. Had them, and they're junk, aggravating, expensive and time consuming to maintain. I live in my small cheap condo & get laughed at for it but not seeking "status". I don't give a sh!t. Let the broke people buy that garbage.

For 1992 the SE got the 24 valve twin cam VE30DE engine which made 190 hp while the GXE retained the 160 hp single cam VG30E. Also I can't think of a quicker or faster Japanese sedan from 1995 through 1997 but I distinctively recall the Lexus GS400 being introduced for 1998. That was both quicker to 60 in 6.2 sec and faster at a governor-limited 148 mph. Both numbers are from Car and Driver Nov 1998.

I had a 1995 Nissan Maxima SE 5spd with black leather interior and metallic midnight blue exterior. It was a fabulous car. I once clocked a 6.8 sec time in 0 to 60 test. I truly loved owning it for 12 solid years (from new). By the 13th year, things were beginning to fall apart. The entire muffler system was shot. The suspension was still very good though, because I'd replaced it with a sportier, stiffer setup about 5 years prior. It was also starting to burn oil (despite regular oil changes) and most frustratingly the center console was becoming a rattle-click fest that created a "whack-a-mole" situation (fix it once, then a month later another rattle). The A/C compressor went at 120k miles, but the replacement never got as cold as the original. It had 174k miles on it when I gave it up. Still have many fond memories of my time with that car.

I'm about to pick up one of these tomorrow for $500. It's a 1997 GLE with 230000 miles. No body damage or rust! But the interior is trashed, needs a wheel bearing, tires, brakes and AC doesn't work.

I bought a new 1997 SE in Rosewood fully loaded w/o abs and still have it. Driven it cross country, took it to Europe and drove England, Wales, France. Two of my sons used it until they had enough to get their own car and my third son is about a year out from using it. It looks a little rough but eng/trans still great.

This was my first car and I had it up to 2018. One issue I had was that the parts wore down fast. I know that almost 20 years is a long time but within that period, I had to change all of the coil packs, spark plugs, belts, alternator, starter, struts, driveshaft, ecg valve, and many more. My sisters Camry has only had a few mechanical things replaced and nowhere near as many as that car. Loved the way it drove but an owner's nightmare with mechanical issues.

My first car was a dark green 97 SE, 5 spoke wheels, spoiler, light brown dash and cloth interior. I've owned quite a few cars since then and have come to realize just how special it was. If only I could find another I would buy it immediately.

Over many yrs I’ve owned a 96 & 2 98 maxima’s. They are great designed cars that run & drive great that are very reliable too. My current maxima is a 1998 I bought with in 2020 with 48k documented miles on it from the original owner for a steal @ $2,800 in mint with no rust, hood original paint & new tires. Todays it’s still running well just turning 77k original miles. A couple yrs ago I saw a 98 maxima online in ca. for sake with 15k original miles with asking price of $6,. I was very tempted to scap it up but shipping from ca to me in ny was $1k and i wasn’t flush with $7k expendable bucks at the time either. But Nissan got the 95-99 gen maxima’s right in all ways, the sr model with the rear deck spoiler & nicer looking larger AL wheels was by far the best looking of that gen maxima. I did buy a clean low Mile/45k next gen 2002 se maxima,it was a nice car with a lot more power(255 vs 190) that slso drove well too. But it wasn’t as comfortable a car to drive vs the prior Gen. & the new design motor was know for using oil brand new pist breaking of 1qt every 3k miles vs all 3 of my prior 95-99 gen maxama’s with the award winning motors that in my case never used any oil between the 3k mile mile oil & filter changes I give the using conventional oil. With proper maint on motor, trans & cooling system the 95-99 gen maxima’s can easily go 200k+ miles. I took the 1st 98 max I owned to fl a few times from ny with almost 200k miles on it and it didn’t use any oil getting 28mpg with 2 people in car with full luggage. I’m really gonna mis the 95-99 gen maxima’s when it’s time to retire my current 98 maxima that got many yrs left in it with currently only 77k mikes on it. But the issue with running old low miles cars that a normally bullet proof reliable is that being in my case 26+ yrs old age gets to parts that aren’t worn out from miles which I have hit sone issues with like pistons sticking in calipers, rubber dried out & cracking in the harmonic balancer?& vss as lv’e covers both of which I just replaced, all rubber hoses,a few relays for the starter etc got corroded internally not working properly requiring replacement, replaced exhaust from cat back too none of which would have normally required replacement back in the day being only 5-6yrs old on avg at 77k mikes vs today my car being 26yrs old with only 77k miles on it proofing low miles isn’t a safety net for reliability when a vehicle is 25-30yrs old. Happy motoring. Scott

I paid $800.00 5 years ago and last week I had a new water pump installed because it was a nightmare of a job to do. More than I paid for the entire car... $1,400. It has been a great little V6/ 5 speed! 180k miles, doesn't smoke, little oil loss around the valve covers, everything works and excellent in the snow. One problem it has is at low speed it kind of wants to rabbit hop slightly. Almost like it's lugging but it's not, if that makes any sense.

I just bought a '99 GLE. It was sitting in my friend's uncle's garage in Florida. I went to visit and he took me by the house he was selling for his uncle's estate. We happened to walk through the garage and he mentioned selling the car. I looked underneath and saw very little rust, new tires, clean interior and shiny paint and said hell I'll buy it! He didn't realize I was serious because I'm up in the northeast. But after I got a shipping quote I called him back and asked for first dibs. It's a '99 automatic GLE with 69k. I brought it up with 67K but had to start driving it after my daily got t-boned. I've been driving it for about 3 weeks now and I'm so impressed I almost wish I could keep it; But with no garage and the harsh northeastern winters the car will be ruined in a year or two, not to mention I routinely drive about 1K miles each week. So I think I'm going to sell it. It's really too nice of a car for me to turn into a daily driver. Everything works, even the cassette player and the Bose system sounds fantastic! It's my first Nissan and I love this car. I've had about a dozen Hondas, a Toyota and a Mazda that just got wrecked. If I had a house with a garage I'd hang onto it. Hell I don't even own a home, I rent!

Good review! Very nostalgic. My dad purchased a new 1995 Maxima at the time and I certainly borrowed it a lot - even taken some nice dates out in it! A couple of the gals even drove it and was very fond of the car 😆 Overall, terrific 4-door sports car. I recall casually racing a Mustang GT and a few other import sports coupes and easily out sprinted them. The acceleration of the V6 was effortless! Unfortunately, Nissan today is a different story. They need to redo both the Altima and Maxima with regular automatic transmissions and have a V6 as an engine option. The turbo 4s need to be paired with a DCT not the CVT nonsense.

The 6'5 over 240lb owner give us a little history with the purchase of his 1997 top of the line Maxima. For his test drive he was accompanied by 4 Japanese Nissan technicians on the performance & it's ability to move weight quickly. The demonstration of the overdrive selector engaged at 67 mph that car has some serious freeway performance for the time.

Retired LEO here and the 1997 Nissan was known as the #1 vehicle to evade police back then. I owned a 1997 GLE and it was a high quality vehicle. The suspension was excellent, far superior to my cruiser, but my favorite feature was its seat heater which could isolate heat to the lower back. Nissan no longer offers that comfort option. I wish I still owned the vehicle. They don’t manufacture vehicles of that quality anymore.

I had a 98 maxima se manual that was given to me for free in 2011. This thing was rough on the outside being in Ontario Canada. This thing had 387,000km on it and had a mint interior. Rocked it hard coming out of high school with all my buddies. Thing was a ROCKET. I remember doing around 220km at top speed, actually hitting a cat; kid you not! Loved the car, mostly knowing I could write it off owing nothing on it so it was always driven hard. We use to take dryer doors off clothes dryers and reverse over them under the back wheels and lock the handbrake and ride around parking lots. Intake completely bypassed, straight pipe. Loved the car! Suspension died on it at 682,000km ish. Bose sound system leather sunroof. I want another one! Lmao

All I can say on the performance in. I got a ride in 1997 Maxima from the original owner from rancho Cucamonga ca to 6 flags magic mountain. Back in 03. Mind you the weight of 5 passengers & myself. The combined weight including the driver 6'5 almost a thousand pound I'm sure of passenger wait. This car torque to get the car moving was impressive.
