The fourth-generation Nissan Maxima made its debut for the 1995 model year sporting an all-new, sleek design and serving as a replacement for the outgoing model which had been on sale since 1988. Continuing the use of V6 power, the new-for-1995 Maxima implemented a new aluminum DOHC 3 liter V6.
The fourth-generation Nissan Maxima was a sporty sedan that targeted buyers looking for not only practicality, but also a bit of driver appeal.

My grandma had a 95 Maxima. She picked me up from school in it every day from 2005-2012 and it was the transportation of my childhood. It only failed to start on us 3 times due to a dead battery. She ultimately gave it to my cousin. My grandma still talks about that car as the most reliable car she has had to date.

Its amazing how the Nissan Maxima used to be such a vehicle of respect back in the mid 80’s- early to mid 90’s. It used to be a dream car of mine as a kid in the late 80’s….the keypad on the the doors, the warning chime voice etc 😆 I saved money and bought a 92’ in high school back in the early 90’s, thanks to my parents signing. It felt like magic. GXE with Luxury Package, GLE wasn’t available in this generation. Also owned a 1991 Black SE as a 2nd car many years later…as well as a 2000 I30T. It makes me sad to see how the Maxima ended up in its latter years. No real respect. It was the car many automakers tried to mimic.

Great generation of Nissan Maxima! My dad had the 1995 model and I borrowed it often from running errands and taking the ladies out on dates. The build quality was very solid and refined. The selling point was the quick v6 engine. Quite possibly the fastest 4 door sedan in the world at the time. What a nice memory. I wished they put an engine like this in the current 6th generation Altima instead of the sluggish CVT - the style is great but engine and performance does not match. That was the golden age of Japanese sedans and cars in general.

The car is near perfect and runs fantastik. I did spend thousands to sort out all the issues with regard to suspension, gaskets, belts, tires, ect... Extremely clean. I had owned 5th & 6th gen maximas but they didn't compare with this one. The prior and only owners were a childless couple who only drove the car to church & other affairs. Has a spare engine for them. Lots of parts. I had a 92 SE silver loaded that had a rare engine I was told ...I cannot remember. Not super rare but rare. Mine was black leather bose and all. His are tan on both leather and the SE has been well cared for. So I miss mine. One day I'll get another one. They are the absolute best 90s sport JDMs for the money then and now. Yeah honda is good too. But many slept on Nissan back then going honda and missing out. As Honda was the Coca-Cola or Coke of Japanese cars. So most thought they were the only good ones. Then people caught on. Toyota Nissan and Honda were par for the top best buys. Powerful 4s and 6s. I love me some old school JDM. Never really modified my cars but I did some camaros and trucks. That 88 (and on) SE model-especially in black with a tan leather interior-was GORGEOUS. The dashboard let it down a little bit, as Nissan hadn’t sized up the buttons and other controls proportionally to the larger dimensions of the car. The long shift stalk and large expanses of plastic to the left and right of the HVAC and stereo in the center stack are awkward for example. In the late 90s I cross-shopped a used Maxima SE with a used Mazda 626 ES V6. I chose the Mazda. The Maxima felt a bit “loafy” and oversized, yet spacious when compared to the 626. Slipping in to the 626 made me feel like everything was proportioned for ME (average height/weight 5’9” 150 lbs). The Maxima had a power edge, but the 626 was more of a tight fitting glove- almost like a Miata sedan. The following (94+?) Maxima models seemed to lose their edge as compared with the late 80s/early 90s model, which was a pure purposeful design. As Nissan began to embrace the low end luxury market, they slowly started to incorporate extraneous curves and embellishments unbecoming of their self-proclaimed “4DSC” badge. I love your channel, the insights and historical details are top notch. Let’s chat before you tackle the 626! :)

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon we agree! I love those door handles… their pure geometric shape, and how they extend to the edge of the door. Lovely. Still, the Maxima did not have the “fit like a glove” feel that the Mazda gave me. I’m sure I’m lonely in my opinion there, as no one regards the 626 in any esteem these days…however, I was able to chat with John Davis from Motorweek during one of their KZbin retro episodes, and he told me that the 626 GT turbo was one of his favorite cars ever!

You did an excellent job as usual. I am not a fan of Nissan, but I do watch and keep up with many car companies in the world. Very informative and good footage. I knew about the Infiniti I30 and Maxima connection. Nice to know they were built in the same plant. Maxima was really high teach in the early years. It changed with the times. It is gone now, but it became too much like a more expensive Altima in recent years. This is why Altima thrives and in still with us. The recent Maxima competed more with larger cars( Toyota Avalon) in the recent years. I did like the information about the international markets where it was sold and the names it used. good job showing the Maxima some love. I own a 2002 3.5 with a 6 speed and I love it. one of my friends had a 96 with a 5 speed and after borrowing it one day I wanted one which I got in December of 2012 with 171,000 miles, now it has 327,000 miles and it wasn't babied at all. main thing I remember about the 96 was that it had really good throttle response and it loved to rev. the 3.5 came with a heavy 35 or 38 lbs dual mass flywheel and didn't rev as nice, I have a JWT 15 lbs flywheel now with 350Z clutch setup. I also added a H-LSD from a Sentra SE-R Spec V donor tranny.. 3.5 takes really well to exhaust mods. mainly because they come with the same choked up 4th gen Cali spec exhaust manifolds, pre cats and Y pipe. along with that it came with 2" exhaust with a dented pipe to clear a small center brace that I eventually removed to get bigger pipes put in. I'm also running regular FED spec 4th gen exhaust manifolds with a Warpspeed high flow Y-pipe which forum members say flow almost as good as headers. only header option these days are OBX and people say they aren't that great. the 3.5 even shares heads, cams, and pistons with the 350Z so once the ECU was flashed to optimize the intake cam timing along with ignition and fuel it made a huge difference in top end power. the 3.5 does feel kind of weak down low though. on the intake side I have all the NWP intake mods, and I optimized the factory airbox with silicone couplings aluminum tubing. cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/maxima.org-vbulletin/1300x731/a1_7f2f3c00336e3eaed8a358c2aef1e4c19363d957.jpg the main issue I have had with the car was repeated throw out bearing failure and engine mounts, Nisformance makes the best mounts for the 5th gen. at the moment I'm getting ready to swap in the more powerful 7th gen engine

Great video! The only thing is the VG engine was a 12-valve SOHC V6, not a 24-valve. The VE motor (1992-1994 SE Maxima only) was similar to the VQ30DE with exception of the VE having variable valve timing on the intake (which was very problematic for that motor). I used to own a 91 SE and a 98 SE. Both were amazing vehicles!

@autochatter 2 жыл бұрын
I think the VE is basically a VG based engine and similar to what the 90 to 96 300zx had in it. The VGs were all iron blocks. The VQ was all aluminum and a new design.

@emmanuelriviera9654 2 жыл бұрын
@Yoshi Straddlebeam No, the narrator of this video is correct. As a prior third-gen owner myself, if I’m not mistaken the VG30E was a 12 valve, as you stated, however the VG30DE featured two aluminum heads with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder (24 valves in total). I’m pretty sure that was the mill he was referring to in the video.

@@emmanuelriviera9654 no, as I stated, the VE was 24 valves. The VG engine was never a 24 valves In it’s early years. I know both the VG and VQ motors inside and out.

@Yoshi Straddlebeam I typically don’t comment, but this was hilarious. The VG30DE was 24 valves. It was even in the JDM Cedric and fair lady Z. There’s even plenty of information out there from credible sources confirming it. C’mon man!

I had a 2000 Maxima. It was a great highway cruiser and its agile handling on the highway once saved my life by avoiding what could have been a serious accident. However, it had three issues: First, its fuel economy was poor. I averaged around 20 mpg in mostly suburban driving. Second, reliability and maintenance costs were bad. The transmission blew up at around 45,000 miles and needed a total rebuild. Mostly covered by an extended warranty, but still ridiculous. Third, I came to utterly distrust Nissan dealership service centers. And not just one or two. All of the ones I dealt with. I went all over Southern California trying to find an honest one. I caught them in lies, poor workmanship, over-charging, billing for work not done, double-billing for work done. It was so bad I was going to sue one dealership and the general manager had to come down and apologize and offer a bunch of free stuff. I traded it in for a Honda Accord that was one of the best cars I’ve ever had. Not quite as good on the highway as the Maxima, but much less of a headache. Kept it for 16 trouble-free years. Easily got over 30 mpg and very inexpensive to maintain. And no weird stuff from Honda service centers. Total peace of mind. Eventually sold the Accord with well over 200,000 miles and it was still going strong.

You did a much better job here than other 4th gen reviews but few errors. The 3rd gen had the rare VE30DE motor between 92 and 94 only on SE models. It had 190hp/190tq valve timing, variable intake, limited slip diff, and it had a higher top speed than the 4th gen all the way to the 7th gen from my racing experience. It was good for 150mph. KZbin "145+ in Maxima"

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon at around 5:20 you mentioned that the VQ was similar to the VG it was replacing. That both had DOHC and 24 valves, when in fact, the VG in the maxima had a SOHC and 12 valves. VG only had 162hp. It was actually the engine mostly used in the 3rd gen not the 24 valve VE. The VE is the only time Nissan used that engine in the US spec SE maxima and I never see anyone do any videos like this on it, and never mention it's existence. Not even the nissan dealer knows about it unless I would tell them to run the vin. You should have seen how many times I would get VG parts for my VE from Nissan parts and other parts stores/junkyards. Very frustrating. Btw, it was a direct competitor to the Taurus SHO of those years with the Yamaha engine. Just a bit slower, but that top speed was no joke.

Yeah I know but I was talking about the VG in general. There were JDM Nissans that were 24 valves in the VG-other markets also-I wasn’t being Maxima specific-that’s what I was referring to when I said “similar”. I figured you guys would already know that, I should’ve been clearer-a few guys in the chat got into arguments over that.

All Maxima's before 2000 were solid built reliable machines. After 2000 they turned that quality to a massive failure. Bought a '00 in '03, by '06, starter went out, bearings shot, power windows stopped working, heat sensor went out, gear shift sensor went out and Bose Stereo turned to rattling crap. Mind you with 222 hp, it's 0-60 was 8.0 seconds and felt like it too. DON'T BUY THIS CAR!!! Honest owner here.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon I don't know what happened but I hope they make it back. Many years ago when I was in high school we had a 1987 Maxima GXE top of the line. Car ran smooth and quiet powerful for its time. Unfortunately we moved to Toyota. They have been pretty much in our family since 1992. When the 2000 Maxima came out, nothing on the street looked like it so I had to have one. My mom told me not to do it but I learned my lesson so now I'm back for sure. Currently own an 03 ES 300. Paid cash for it back in 2017 and I still use that car daily. Only had one major issue back in 2021 where I had to get the catalytic converter replaced. Everything else has been normal maintenance from oil changes to tune ups, replaced minor item ect.. ect... I'm sold but will be looking forward to Nissan bringing that special niche back that they used to have. Honestly if I found a 1997 to 1999 Maxima I would still buy to this day. That was the last generation of true reliable Nissan products
