You can buy a digital OBD device that enters any digital mileage and can change it so my recommendation is to do it on the truck you took it out of before you take it out. So it matches your mileage exactly. The mechanical mileage you can't mess with it at all You will screw yourself any digital though can be reprogrammed

I have a 1999 Ranger also. Mine came with a 5 speed manual and no tachometer. The cluster I like best is the ones out of the Explorer Sport Trac. They have a white background with orange needles. I was glad this was a plug and play on the Ranger. The older Mustangs that came with tachometer had a different wiring harness, not so with the Ranger.

The “Fuel Reset” light is actually your “Door Ajar” light. You get that issue when you swap a post 1998 cluster on a pre 1998 car (I think!) for whatever reason they rearranged the lights in those years

Nicolas Novoa hey whats up man! That very well could be, definitely some good insight! From what I’ve seen, the ‘97 and prior didn’t even have the Fuel Reset lights anyway. This ‘97 didn’t, my ‘96 doesn’t, and I’ve been to the junkyard since and noticed other 95-97 without it as well!

U have to switch the ground wires. After 97 the door adjar ground wire moved. The upper black connector has an blk/orange wire that needs the be swamped with the gry/orange wire from the upper larger white connector. The Grey/orange is the fuel reset light and the blk/orange is door adjar. If ur looking at the back of the bigger white connector it is the fifth one in from the right. Swap it with the blk/orange 2nd from the right. Works perfect.

Awesome video! I also a 97 B2300 and the odometer stoped about 120,000 miles ago. And my Speedo was off by 20 MPH. I found a 2002 Ford Explorer gauge with a tachometer and it fit perfectly

Im sure it could be figured out, possibly even without the ECU. But I wouldn’t know any specifics personally to guide you in the right direction. Go do some comparing between years at a u-pull-it and/or look at some wiring diagrams im sure it could be figured out.

I've got a 1998 Ford Taurus SE that has a Tach but doesn't have the Voltage or Oil Pressure Gauge. Any chance one of these Clusters would fit in a Taurus? I have to take mine out anyway to replace some burned out bulbs, so I thought if there was a way to replace it, I might consider it.

Why didn’t you just pull the bulb from the FUEL RESET light and put the bulb holder back to prevent dust n dirt from getting in the cluster?

My guess would be the cluster is bad. These clusters are good for different malfunctions. And IMO they are cheap enough that you can grab another one to easily make that determination.

FYI any digital odometer can be digitally programmed to whatever number you just have to have the correct OBD plug device

Speedo worked just fine. Ive done this on few Rangers, all with no issues. Speedo works every time. These clusters are notorious for fail points, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just defective.

I had to put new bulbs in the cluster on my 04 ranger 3.0 2wd 5 speed and now the speedometer arm keeps dropping to below zero when I just turn the turn to the on position and not having the engine running. I can’t figure out why it keeps doing it. Any suggestions?

Just outta curiosity, does your cluster have a stop-pin at 0? I’m asking because I don’t see how the needle would drop below the stop-pin at 0 unless the whole arm is poking out farther than it should be at the center hub of the needle.

My 97’ ranger has the sMe cluster as the Mazda, was very confused for a second, especially how it literally says it’s Ford made on that cluster. I’m replacing the main 5 bulbs on the cluster rn and it’s a very precise process as you can mess it up very easily.

I literally just went through this a few hours ago on my 1995, the 96 to 2003 I believe are the same 1995 is a one-year only for some reason, the plugs are the same but the check engine light will not light up and some of the other oddball little tiny lights don't work. You can also use a Ford Explorer gauge cluster again if it is a 1995 only use a 1995.

When I was at the junkyard I pulled out a lot of gauges to figure out what the differences are I soon realized it was the location of the tiny "idiot lights" and there is a total of at least 8 different gauges for the 1995 through 2011 dashboard, this is what I figured out: There obviously is a tach gauge set and a no tach gauge cluster for all years of the ranger and there is at least 4 different versions of each 1) 1995 Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger use the same gauge set. 2) The 1996 and 1997 Ford Ranger and Ford Explorer use the same gauge set. 3)The 1998 through 2002 Ford Ranger and Ford Explorer use the same gauge set 4) 2003 through the end of production the gauge cluster gets a digital odometer and (solving the broken odometer that I guess is common on all the earlier gauges) I have no personal experience with this gauge set but from what I read they are all identical from 2003 until the end of production in 2011.

Good info! Love the effort. I did the same thing when in the junkyard like I mentioned in the video, but I didn’t get that deep & into wire pins. I was more-so focused on ensuring all the harnesses were the same. Make sense there would be some slight variations throughout the years though.

I like this video my question would be if you had to just fix the mileage cause it was broke and not sure how long ago that was how you would tell how much actual miles the vehicle had and could adjust it forward to the correct miles if there was a way to know how many miles the vehicle actually had since the the mileage broke

Unfortunately, there is no way to track mileage that wasn’t tracked by the odometer itself. There’s no way of retaining a mileage reading from the vehicle itself other than the odometer.

@@TheOriginalBeeCee that sucks but it's that's what I get for an old 90s vehicle. One thing I do like about it though is the memories it brings me back to. Having to roll the windows up and down manually and the low tech gauge and the old metal seat buckles that get hot in the sun shine on them during the day. I plan on giving it some upgrades in the future like a more modern day radio that has Bluetooth instead of having to get one of those cassette player things that has a cord to plug into the phone headjack so I can play my playlist when I'm not interested in listening to the radio specially for a hands free way to answer my phone if I need to during a trip cause I'm driving a stick shift

Yea sounds like you got a bad cluster. I wouldn’t have even uploaded this video if it didn’t work correctly as it should. I’ve had a few clusters (to sell) and all of them worked just fine!

Dustin Medley hey hows it going man. For 95-03 it would be plug & play. The 93-94 cluster itself is different than the 95-03 (like the clusters in the video), but I can’t speak to the wiring. I know there are differences, I just don’t know exactly what.

Somebody made a video on how to do it I can’t remember if it was in this video or another because it was so long ago but everything else was plug and play and everything is still working great and haven’t had any problems yet

TLDR: Anyone know why my new clusters tachometer is reading way too low and the speedometer is slow? My truck is a 4 cyl. Maybe the one I bought is for a 6 or 8cyl. I just picked up a 2000 Mazda B2500, manual transmission. It's my first stick so I'm learning. The problem is I keep hearing all the RPM teaching and I can't exactly know what 1500 rpms is by jusg feel alone when I haven't driven a manual. lol Problem is I just threw a new cluster in my truck yesterday, it is from a 2000 ford ranger. Everything worked fine except the tachometer was resting at 500ish RPMs but when I revved my engine I couldn't even get the rpms above 2-3k without it feeling like I'm flooring the throttle. lol Waayy too loud for what that to be accurate. Had a buddy test drive it for me too and he agreed. The speedometer is also almost 5mph slower than what you're driving. Tested before and after using the crappy method of Google Maps. I'm thinking I have a bad cluster or I have a 6 or 8 cyl cluster. Not sure if that matters.

Mine does the same when I swapped it. The weird thing is if I clear the codes the tach will read normal for a little bit then goes back to being off. I’ve heard you have to add a ground to one of the wires on the cluster but I’ve never tried it

Fernando Leon that’s actually a new one on me! Although, there are definitely similarities between the two, so I can definitely see that being a possibility. Easy way to confirm would be to check a junkyard and check if it has the same 3 harnesses going to cluster. Next time I go if they have one I’ll check it out myself.

I did the same with my 99 ranger, XLT Super Cab, manual trans and no Tach. Pathetic FORD, and it even has cruise control and factory back window slider and tint and back side window tint. Changed out my 2007 F150 as well. At least there both plug and play.
