Most people who have nothing good to say about Rangers have done one of two things 1- tried using them in a way they weren't meant to be used 2- they never do any thing to take care of their vehicle. I have a '94 and a '04 Ranger. Both are well maintained and have never given me any troubles. Most of what you are calling problems are just normal wear items or abuse.

Your right i need to vacuum mine out and maybe a wax wouldnt hurt.Everything is basically been upgraded, Just bought some new tires, brakes, locking gas cap, cruise control buttons, rain guards, and bug shield for my 99 xlt splash flaresside. It's been good to me so far.all it Needs a rear bumper.towed up to 1000 pounds in the back with no problem.

01 SE B3000 here. 107k miles got it at 85k. Cam synchronizer wasn't in correctly caused a check engine. Fixed it, and the only thing I've done to this thing since then was fluid changes. One front wheel bearing and a few other normal things. It's been mudding, etc, and hasn't given me any problems. Love my little truck!

Purchased my Ford Ranger 2.3L (manual) new back in 1994. After 26 years, it still runs great with no issues at all. Parts are cheap and you have many DIY things you can do to the truck. Now, with 373K miles ... do I have to say more about this truck.

1997 Ford Ranger 2.3 5 speed purchased new now has 310,000 miles. Never an engine, transmission, or rear end problem. Only big issues have been all 4 spring mounts, brakes lines, and now it needs new radius rod bushings (and probably new radius rods and mounts). You cannot kill these trucks!

It's still better than sohc 4.0l, that thing breaks timing chains when you look at them wrong lol, then you have to pull the engine to get to the one in the back of the engine, what a hunk of 💩 😆.

@@everydayirace Yes that's for sure. Ford does some bonehead designs, trying to turn a pushrod block into an ohc by running a timing chain in the back and front of the engine.

Excellent informative video. I have a 1996 3.0l Std Cab Long Bed and it runs like a new truck with 181,000 miles. Every two years, I have to smog it and I put in "Guaranteed To Pass Smog" that cleans the entire fuel system and the read out from the smog test is amazing that it reads like a new truck. And the truck will be 27 years old next year. I love my Ranger.

I put the Explorer rearend in mine because it's just way cool to have 4 wheel disc brakes. I also put LED lights in the dash so many colors to choose from. I also put and Explorer instrument cluster (with 100k less miles) in mine because I'm not selling it and the face is white very cool.

I bought a new 96 Mazda b 4000 and put 315K miles on it before I gave it away. At around 200K miles the transmission went out and I replaced it with a rebuilt one. and shortly after that I had the front end redone with new bushings. Around 280K the front left bearing went out due to the fact that I never checked them. AT 310K the transmission went out again. At 315K I gave it to one of my employees! Wish I still had it. Also the 4x4 electronic activator quit working around 280K. For a truck that I put this much milage on it driving around 70-80 mph all over Texas, this was one of my best buys. I changed oil every 6k miles and plugs every 100k. I went through 6 set of tires driving this truck and it rode smoothly and drove well. One great truck.

Really enjoyed this video. I have a 95 Mazda b2300 with 300k plus miles. Recently replaced the air compressor, heater coil and condenser. Blows cold after replaying the recently cracked heater control valve. Was pretty easy to do myself. It was cracked worse than it displayed. Was broken inside the hose also. Radiator recently replaced. Check your hoses when replacing radiator. My radiator system is so sealed that it still has pressure on the upper hose the next day. Hey, I have a 95 B2300 that I bought brand new. After all these years I only have 108k miles. I had problem with starting the car. After changing so many parts like the fuel pump, pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuses STILL couldn’t start the car. What was the problem? I ended up new direct wiring from the fuel pump to the battery with an on/off switch. Cost? $16 special wire from Amazon did the trick.

Nice video, very interesting. I love my 96 Ranger, but you forgot one more problem: spare tire carrier LH support. Overtime, the metal support tends to crack, which completely destroy the spare tire carriage if you dont fix it on time. Everyone who owns a Ranger should check the spare tire carrier for cracks, common issue. On my truck, I just laser-cut another metal bracket overlaping the original, welded both together and never had any issue! My original bracket was starting to crack, it had a tiny little crack, but if you dont pay attention on time, it will fail for sure.

I just bought a 96 xlt 3.0 4x4 from my neighbor. She bought it new. Almost 30 years of records was damn near a full file cabinet. 236k miles and I have receipts for every oil change. It’s a damn shame I’m only going to be driving it 10-12 miles a week🙄

My 2000 ranger does not have one of those problems. After 136000 miles My problem is the tailgate won't open up. Engine is fine and rear end is good. I have an advantage , I live in California. I change the fluids all the time. I watch Scotty all the time.i do preventive maintenance .Luckily it runs well. 3.0 engine.Good video From Sacramento

WD-40 to the rescue. Take the panel off on the inside upper part of the tailgate and start spraying. Once you free everything up and before you put the panel back on, spray the heck out of the interior with Fluid Film.

@@flick22601 thanx, I did all that. Not working. The side catches are misaligned. I tried to realign the side door catches but the screws are in their extremely tightly. I will have to pre lubricate them and try again .I'm sure I'll have better luck next time. thank you.

The heater core stopping up -reverse the hoses going to the heater cvore and let the water pump clear it. Install a coolant filter on the pressure hose going to the heater core. Filters the gunk out of the coolant and solves that problem on the cheap. Use a remote oil filter relocation kit, and it uses a spin on oil filter.(DO NOT USE A FRAM!!!)

My 97 Ranger was till running good with no issues at 298,000 miles when I sold it and the the trans that's in those is n't the A4LD it's the 4R44E which is an upgraded improved version of the A4LD. As long as you service them regularly ,they'last very well. Mine did fine even though I pulled a heavy tandem axle trailer regularly. I now have an F150 Supercrew but would gladly trade it for another well maintained V6 Ranger SuperCab. I've owned 4 Rangers of various models and they have been some of the best trucks I've ever had. By the way I'm a retired Certified Ford,GM,Chrysler and ASE Technician.

The reason that the mid to late 90's cars have heating and cooling issues is that for several years they never put rust inhibitor in antifreeze . They realized that was a dumb idea and fixed it but several years of cars and trucks , they left the factory with what may as well have been salt water in them . My Dad has 2 97 Dodge 1 tons that had to have their heater cores replaced on warranty with in 2 years of being new .

I had a 98 Ranger. Bought it used. Had it for many years. Never gave me any trouble. Loved that little truck. I ended up selling it to my cousin because her car's transmission went out, and she needed a vehicle for her job. I do wish that Ford would have made all of it's Rangers with 4x4. Driving it in the winter sucked!!

I bought a 94 ranger last year. So far I've replaced the shocks. The brakes. The tires. Passenger side window. And the AC compressor, lines and evap, etc.. it needs a new clutch soon I think. It catches kinda high and chatters a bit on take off. And the front tie rod ends seem a bit loose. Next projects. Oh yeah and the dash lightbulbs, half of them are out. Video was right on about that. Eventually I'll rebuild the engine. Leaks oil in various different places. Almost 200k miles

I drove my ranger from new to 200,000 miles. I chaned the oil, tires, and brakes. Spark plugs, one ball joint, and one u joint. Oh and the fuel filter. That is all. I only sold it to get a bigger truck. I will probably never have a vehicle as reliable as my ranger again.

I have a 94 w/ the 3.0 V6, 5 speed manual. 176,000 miles, still runs strong. I've had to do some shackle and shock mount work, due to rust, (it was a north eastern truck) The 3.0 runs like a top, not bad on gas either. I plan on keeping this truck until the engine fails. it doesn't blow any smoke, pulls hard and stops good. Your video was informative, thanks!

My 2000 ranger v6 has 2 different spark plugs. 3 on one side of the engine and 3 different plugs on the other side. It's in the owners manual

Got a 08 3.0 50k on it for 350 got it in , and running again for 10 years it would of been this year, but I wrote the bitch off . Got me a 94 four banger now, in pretty nice shape , but needs shackles as well

I don’t think the automatic transmission models are anywhere as bad you’re saying, although I do know the later models such as ‘98 & up got a different transmission that was much better. Regardless of the year, I’ve seen countless examples of these trucks with automatics that have very high miles on them. Disagree about the 4.0 V6 too, that’s an excellent engine. I think the 3.0 is gutless piece of junk though.

My 07 had a problems when on normal, put it on Max and it cooled like it should. Thanks to u tube I found the control module on the damper and repaired it. 100000 and still going strong. knock wood

My 4 cylinder 2.3 has 360000 miles. Regular oil changes and maintenance is all I’ve done except for an alternator at 200000 miles and the blend door needing replacements and a blower motor at 340000 miles. Best truck I’ve ever had.

1997 Mazda B-4000SE 4.0L V6 here ( same as a Ford Ranger XLT) - mine suddenly one morning after using all day before would NOT START (it's happened before a few times), cranked like nuts, no "fire". What did I find? It was the F'ing Fuel Pump Inertia "collision" switch mounted on the passenger side inside the firewall. No truck impacts, no bumps, no anything that should have tripped that Inertia "collision" switch!! Fuel pump is fine! Beware Boys, ALWAYS ALWAYS check that damn Inertia "collision" switch FIRST on ANY Ranger or Mazda B-Series!! A kick of a foot, a package you have on the floor bumping it, could easily trip it! Push the button down to reset and GO! YOU DON'T NEED A STINKING OVER PRICED MECHANIC!

Any ranger after 98 is a POS I avoided most problems by droping in a 95 5.0 from a Mustang GT. And also like how the front suspension on my 94 Ford Ranger Splash is so simple and built like a tank

I have 2004 Mazda B2300. 5 speed. When I got to start it, it coughs for nine seconds. It’s been doing this fir a year. It eventually starts, but after 9 seconds. This issue can be caused by many mechanical or electrical faults, it can be fixed by testing each component and finding the faulty one. How much will depend on the component that is faulty. Any abnormal behavior of the truck can and will shorten the truck's longevity, problems don't fix themselves, they cause other components to fail. For example, if engine has a faulty $4 spark plug and it doesn't get fixed, it will overheat and melt $1000 catalytic converter which then can cause head gaskets to blow.............

Thank you for taking your time to explain what a pos i bought..lol..no but seriously…i love my little Mazda..uncover Ranger…so far i have not covered all those problems….mine has been dome light..gauges ..fuel pump..sensor and pipe….battery cables..making a lot of false warnings…on gauges..mass flow sensor someone wired backwards…and just shifts hard…not a problem for me…consider it was abused..more like a work truck…i cant blame it all on the truck..it is a 97..manual shift..i worked in parts for 20 years..so i knew about some of it…i finally found all the missing parts..and back to original…at a junkyard that specializes in Rangers…jack handle..ac vents…dome light..under tire carrier and spare…sun visors..i had covered…trim for dash…they even took it off for me 80..i paid the guy who took it a 20..very people…but thanks to you..i can keep an eye on this other stuff…appreciate your help and thank you so much…good luck on making a truck…i think that’s what i did? I did have to retire most of the truck and used soldier..shrink wrap…and looms..looks really good now..except for paint..i like used look better..?

This is a good video if you have to troubleshoot a Ranger. I'm rescuing a 2000 Ranger with 2.5 automatic and seems there's differing opinions on that combo. Either way, it's a free truck with clear title so any money in counts as purchase price in my opinion. They put a push button start in because the ignition on column toasted. So, I got to 1st figure out ground wire issues.

I have a 93 ranger 4.0 2wd automatic. She starts up fine but when go to give it any kind of acceleration, starts to putter bogdown. As I release the gas peddle it has lag.

The 4.0 pushrod V-6 is known for cracked heads. I had to replace both on my '99. My '09 4.0 has OHC and so far, so good. (75,000 miles)

Dont forget pcv valve. They are kind of hidden so guys dont change. A bad one filled my intake with a coat tar.

Had/have 2 Rangers ('94, 4L and '03, 3L). Experienced various combinations of a lot of these things. Still (my opinion) the best value small truck available. 4L V6 seemed to be over square, knocked a lot when driving in hills/mountains, forced me to use higher octane fuel when on routes involving steep grades. I prefer the 3L, slowest vehicle on the highway but works for me. What I hate the most is the (styled and unnecessary) humped up hood on the 03. It blocks view of about 2 feet of road ahead which is annoying in parking lots

Im going to look at a 97 b2300 4cy standard today for $1200 223000/mi i think. This video is great, being a chick i think i can maybe check alot of these things myself m/l when i test drive it or while the men are discussing their expertise. Its body looks great and it has a clean title. The only issue they said is that it probably needs new spark plugs because its ruuning a bit rough. Any/all advice? I want to surprise my boyfriend who really deserves a treat, and he's always kinda wanted one of these again. (and i have the money) but looking at others similar for sale i think its a reasonable price if its not a money pit in a week~aka our luck. Take that price and run or offer less? Please help me guys!

I've been working on my grandads old 1999 xlt stepside sport with the 4l v6. I plan on installing a 3.8l supercharger from a thunderbird or stang and replace the pistons. Timing and front suspension is perfect just needs traction bars to stop all the swaying including wheelhop and a skid plate for that low hanging radiator. Starter is a trooper.

Watched your video. As for now, problems I've found with my 95 2.3 Ranger: blown slave cylinder (a real pain in the a** to get the top 2 bolts on the trans); leaks on thermostat cover and water pump; broken odometer; cracked fuel filler hose; and finally, broken lower ball joints (waiting for them to arrive) And normal things that i've already replace and service: clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, spark plugs and cables, all filters (fuel, air, oil), brakes (disc and new brake pads).

I've done these on more than few occasions, top trans bolts can be a pain, on my truck I take them off with a wrench from the engine bay.

I've pulled a ton of M5R1's those top bell housing bolt's are not that hard put about 3feet of 3/8 drive extension with a swivel and go up from the side of the tail shaft after you pull the cross member out and let the trans come down a little and voila you can get right to them.

Rear cab mounts are another major issue with Rangers in the salt belt. The factory mounts are just stamped sheet metal.and rust out regularly. There are heavy duty mounts available online from a company in Pa. for a very reasonable price. They're formed from 1/8" steel and bolt in place of the originals.

@@everydayirace I don't know how to post a link but the manufacturer is Parker Metal Products in Tarentum, Pa. They have an Ebay store which is where I bought mine. I paid around $130 for 2 brackets, bushings and cab mount hardware. Hardware to bolt them to the frame isn't included but is easily found locally. They also sell just the brackets (no bushings or hardware) for about $40/each. Trust me when I say that these are VERY high quality parts. I have a 94 Ranger 302 swap going on right now. Even though it had almost 200k miles on it, I made enough selling the original 2.3/5 speed and all of the electronics to buy the Trans-Dapt "Swap in a Box" kit and a 12 pack of Busch beer lol!

A less common problem with the 2.3 is recessed valve seats. Symptoms are usually a dead cylinder after reaching high rpm. Clears up if you let it idle for a minute. At it's worst the truck will die if you rev and let off gas. If you don't let it reach over 3 grand it'll never bee an issue.

I have a 94 Ranger and she isn't the most beautiful but she just starts up and go. I bought it used (cheap) in '05 (negotiated low price because I knew it needed some work). I replaced the ball joints, shocks, all fluids, radiator, AC heater/dryer and the clutch assembly not to long after purchase. The slave cylinder went out so I replaced all clutch items with new stuff while in there. Most of the work was optional and not required but I wanted to replaced many of those things. I've had no problems, except I've replaced the muffler, brakes and oil (normal maintenance stuff). I installed the Curt Class 3 trailer hitch 3 years ago and now she's a hauler. She pulls a lot of stuff. I am looking to buy a Toyota Tundra ('05 to '10). I don't know what I will do with the Ranger. I will probably just park it at my Moms if I find the Tundra I want.

Question: My 1994 Mazda b4000 SE 4wd ac will freeze you out of the vehicle on little trips around town but if I go 30 minutes or more it barely puffs out of all the vents. My blower motor is working on all 4 positions but there is very little air coming out of the vents no matter if it's on max, defrost, panel, floor and panel, etc. I thought there might be trash blocking the vents but #1 there isn't a cabin filter and #2 I read that there is a screen mesh under the cowl vents to prevent trash from getting near the blower. Thoughts??

After seeing what it would take to replace one of the bulbs on the panel, I will continue to keep a flashlight handy to check the gas level when it is dark....... The column shift tube is broken so I'm looking for videos that mention that. Seems that was a common issue in 2000s.

I have 2 4L V-6 ranger 4x's. One is a 94 pushrod motor 3xx,xxx mi. , and the other is the '07 SOHC motor 2xx,xxx mi I blow trucks like yours away all day and newer v6 cars & trucks. , I've even blown away lesser V8's. I've driven 4 banger rangers & no way they can keep up You can't say there's no power, I'll leave you behind in the mountains too!

That anti-slosh module you showed has a swollen capacitor. Those capacitors dry out and stop working over a few years and need to be replaced. Simple to solder in a new one and maybe save you a trip to the parts store. Capacitors are dirt cheap online. Don't cheap out on it. There are 3 or 4 good brands that last the longest. Avoid the Chinese ones.

One of the most major things wrong that wasn;t mentioned is that THIS is northern truck.Weather EATS these trucks up ,so undercoating is very smart. I have a 96 and and 97 down south in Ga.,this guy would lose it over, my 96 AUTO[ 4r44E POS] has 400,000 and will be changed to M5ODR1 and fresh 2.3 TURBO!

Don't forget the infamous 'GEM' module.. If that goes bad it will drive you nuts trying to chase a bad ground, everything with an intermittent function doesn't work right. I bought one on e-bay for ~$70, so no prob.

Maybe that’s what is keeping my 97 from starting? It just died going down the street one day and won’t start. I replaced the fuel pump because the float was already known bad so I had no fuel gauge. Then I checked the batter and charging system and wires. Now I’m going back to the book to start troubleshooting over again knowing the battery and pump work.

@@mikesaltman I don't think the GEM module would make your truck cut off driving down the road. It is for lights, buzzers, door locks etc. A truck cutting out and not starting is almost always fuel, or ignition. A very clogged fuel filter could do it, bad pump, bad crankshaft pos. sensor, bad/bumped fuel cutoff switch in passenger comp.. something basic.

I just did ignition control module and coil packs, plugs and wire. That was for an always running rough condition. Also check Iac valve.

Great video, I need a slosh controller. I have a couple problerms you didn't cover, which is my speedometer is intermittent, and the fricking e brake is worthless even with new shoes. I have to use a chuck on a string sometimes. String so I can grab it without getting out. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very valuable to me!..

Anti slosh module can be bought on eBay or picked up at local salvage yard. Intermittent speedometer can be caused by many things such as poor contact, bad speedo servo or bad gem. Weak e brake can be caused by stretched cables or misadjusted brake shoes.
