This specific model, the X300 and X306 were the most reliable and best built jaguars period. A very rare stock configuration in the UK has the Getrag 5 speed manual, which turns this car into a true high performance vehicle. The AJ16 inline 6 engine used between 1994 and 1997 is extremely stout and smooth, but sadly it got replaced by the infamous v8's with the nikasil issues. For XJ's, this is where it's at, and they remain my personal favourite.

They were comparatively reliable, and I was ALWAYS happy driving them, and kept them pristine. I sold them because it had become difficult to obtain key parts (driveshaft center support bearings, for example). Covid killed off aftermarket manufacturing for a lot of their parts. I was very happy for the time I drove them, and they will be at the top of cars I most enjoyed to own. Just sublime. This was one of the most perfect models they ever made. I have a 1987 Series 3 XJ6 I love dearly, but I’ll admit it’s short on power and has older car shortcomings (although I find it’s actually very well-built and the only problems I’ve encountered are where previous owners ignorantly tinkered with things). The later XJ40 (I also had a 1994) addressed a lot of issues, but the 1995-1997 X300 was such a beautiful and well-made car that retained the beauty of earlier XJ’s. The 1998-2003 XJ’s were beautiful, but they had the needy V8’s with their annoying timing chain issues and the ZF gearboxes had the cracking drums. With the later XJ, the 2006-2009 was basically perfection. V8 was bulletproof in those years, build quality was great, aluminium structure couldn’t be beat, etc. 2010 and later went a bit too far in trying to make a statement, although I would still have one. I visited a Jaguar dealer yesterday and all I saw were ugly crossovers with ugly black wheels. Heartbreaking, as I know people would still buy Jaguar sedans if they put them out there in front of customers. I still see lots of new Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc. sedans, so I don’t believe people only want SUVs.

This body style was iconic and should have been retained like the VW bug where for decades it is fundamentally the same car but with minor changes and improvements. But let’s be honest. The mechanicals and electrical system were absolutely garbage. These cars vanished so quickly from the roads. The day after the warranty ended, it was economically totaled if one thing broke on it. Too bad in the 00s the SUV craze blinded car enthusiasts from making drivetrain swaps in these a common thing like how so many people out Chevy 350s in XJs during the 1980s. The ideal drivetrain and entire electrical system transplant to put in would be from the 98-00 Lexus LS400 to get the legendary UZ engine durability and refinement. Some people have put Chevy LS engines in them in more recent years but this is rare. Jaguar made the quality worse in the successor model for 2004 and lost the iconic look.

I don't claim that the old cars were better than the new cars. But I claim that old cars (especially in the 1990's) were much better looking than the new cars. Just think about old air cooled Porsches (964, 993), BMW E39, E31, Ferrari 355 and these classic Jaguars for example. Look at those brands now. Mostly ugly or at least mundane designs, like F-Pace or those horrendous BMW's with gigantic grills. Porsche Taycan is so bloated and ugly that small children shouldn't see that car before bedtime. I'd say that the most iconic designs were done in the 90's. Sure this Jaguar base design is from the sixties but so were Porsches and BMW's. Then the manufacturers started to add gimmicks and technology for technology's sake. This era of cars can be driven forever and repaired forever (providing you take good care of them). New cars are disposable plastic garbage with no classic value in the future. This XJ (and the one that followed in 2003'ish) were beautiful, elegant cars. And before someone says I'm living in the past, I'm 34 years old and I love the 90's cars.

@@detonator2112 You have it right, the X350 came out in 2003. I liked the upgraded technology of the X350 and was in love with everything else, but the horizontal grille slats and bulky, flat rear end at introduction in 2002. I didn’t hate it, but I feel it needed more work. Tbh, I was still on the X308 hype train and disliked every XJ before it. I feel the descending/tapering rear end was an XJ trademark until the X350. I must state, Jaguar Cars took much too long to release that car. Having entered development in 1997, it should’ve been released in 2001 or 2002. I get 2001 wouldn’t have been possible, as 4 years is too short, but 5 years was viable. Jaguar prioritized the S Type and X Type way too much. The prestige of a Jaguar was still strong in 2000 via XJ/XK and attracted even young buyers, but within 5 years that had collapsed. Both the X-Type (February 2001) and E65 7-Series (November 2001) ruined X350 chances horribly. D3 Audi A8 of 2003 to a slightly lesser degree, but strong enough to make a dent. Against the Lexus LS 430 and the Mercedes-Benz S430/S500, the X350 XJ was a formidable opponent. Sales of the XJ Series fell horribly, once the X350 was available in North America in late 2003. I remember going to my local Jaguar dealership circa August or September 2003 and seeing the fleet of X308s in the parking lot. The new 2004 X350s hadn’t been delivered yet. I wish I had taken a photo that day, but camera phones and the like weren’t so common. Didn’t even have a digital camera on me nor a Polaroid. I regret it, because that beautiful dealership was sold and beautiful white stucco building demolished for parking space. Sadly once the X350 came around, dealer stocked very few of them and the lot became filled with S-Types and X-Types in the mid-2000s. I became disenchanted. BMW’s ugly, but high tech and imposing 2002 7-Series made enough of an effect on non connoisseurs in the flagship segment and the much more modern looking still aluminum A8 which had come out a few months earlier. The X Type ruined the XJ proposition, because of how its design came out 2.5 years before the XJ. The X Type design was finalized in December 1998, but had actually been based on the final X350 XJ design completed earlier in 1998. Yet, the former came out first some 26 months later and the XJ took another 3.5 years to even reach UK showrooms, USA even longer. People ended up seeing the new XJ as a dated flagship contemporary with more lacking prestige thanks to being now seen as an inflated X-Type vs the other way around. The X Type was frumpy looking upfront. Biggest gaffe Ford management ever made was to take the flagship model’s design and put it on a cheap car coming out years ahead. Radical X351 was not what true Jaguar buyers wanted either in 2010, so price was paid dearly and killed the nameplate altogether. The XJ40 was even much too dated and attempts to fix/modernise the exterior from the 1979-80 design were rejected by superiors, as that had been due to release originally around 1983-84, not 1986-87. The square lights were available from XJ40 launch in late 1986, but became standard by 1993. Due to internal politics, I don’t think the XJ ever had a chance at long term survival once BMW started taking luxury sports sedans seriously. The invisible 2800/Bavaria gave way to the E23 7 Series in 1977 and the next gen 735i in 1987 a massive threat, which hurt Jaguar in the eyes of American public, but didn’t eradicate interest entirely yet for another decade. What happened then? A study needs to be made, to determine why Jaguar sales fell off after the X308? 1999 was IIRC the best sales years ever. Was it the S Type, lowering the price of entry for unsuspecting buyers?

Beautiful, dignified - and the XJR was a 90s sleeper beast. But my goodness, these were unreliable. I could have sworn he said "our Jag LEAKED through the 1/4 mile" @2:00 - which would have been just as accurate. 🤣

Picture it. Playground around 1996. I’m six years old. Time to leave. Car won’t start. Somehow according to my dad that’s my fault. He can’t figure out what’s wrong. Where even is the battery? Turns out it’s in the trunk. The bolt holding the cable on was not tightened and came loose. Easy fix. Did I ever get an apology? No. Am I in my thirties and still hold a grudge to my father? Yes.

Nobody should have one because they are way beyond expensive to have!

Elegant, luxurious, classic, but I will always prefer MB S Class, Audi V8, BMW 7. Jaguar would be my last option in the world of the premium cars

The XJRs were absolute junk , they should have came with a wrecker to pull them. Ask any mechanic that ever had to work on one or refused to work on another.

My great uncle had a V12 2 door from the 80’s in his barn with 22,000 miles that he could not give away. I remember going over there and being in awe of how nice it was and how huge the motor was and he would tell my dad that he could have it because he didn’t want it. Everyone was like no thank you. It had an electrical problem that could not be figured out and my dad was like after sitting in the barn for 10 years it’s only going to have more problems. No way did he want to deal with it. Now that I’m older I would probably try it, but I would go into it knowing it may not ever be running right. It’s a shame because they are stunning cars. It was dark green with tan leather. I still remember the good smell.

Ford ruined Jaguar. GM ruined Saab. When a big company buys a small or failing company. They always change too much. I understand making some changes. But if you want a brand to have success. Let them be theme. Just give them help
