For some vehicles. Others the early 2000s were the pinnacle. Subaru definitely peaked around 2005. Toyota for some models peaked around 2004 for tacomas and others. For the landcruiser it may have peaked much earlier (1980s???). You couldn't even get a manual trans in the 80 series; at least in america.

@Swampy it takes 3 hrs to go 45 miles in LA on a good day, what do you think that time will be in a major disaster? Literally infinity...total gridlock as vehicles run out of gas, break down, and are abandoned. Burr is smarter than you, obviously. Up...and OUT. If you cant do that initially then worrying about biodiesel etc wont even matter. Get off the X.....then you can worry about step 2, which I'm sure he has.

My only question is why don't these restorers tear down the factory 4.5L and build it back w/ more HP? Awesome 80! I want one. I have an original 1996 FZJ80R GXL which has been with my sister's family since new. I finally managed to convince her to sell it to me last year. It had a genuine 83,000 kms (51,573 miles) on the clock when I picked it up. And they've never ever taken it off-road - not once. Closest to off-roading it has done is driving on unsealed roads. First thing I've done is fit new all-terrain tyres. I want to keep it relatively stock and original, but will upgrade the suspension and raise it 3" - the maximum legal limit in Australia w/o requiring an engineer certificate. I've also removed the third row seats and fitted some rear drawers. As well as a Rhino-Rack Pioneer flat roof rack. Since picking it up in Oct 2018, I've added nearly 10,000kms. I've takne it off-road, from challenging fire trails, to the beach (and anything in between). It's a keeper, and I have no plans in getting rid of it.

If it is for an apocalypse he should have gotten a 1 wire run diesel engine for it. Something that will run on anything from veggie oil to used motor oil or kerosene or diesel or gas. Something like an old 12HT or a 13bt or a 12 valve cummings. In an apocalyptic situation u want 3rd world reliability, fuel economy and a vehicle that will still run after an EMP. That LS will be a boat anchor without infrastructure.

as a Toyota tech for the last 20 years and an owner of a FZJ80 i can say without a doubt this is one rig that absolutely is the best of the best. not just a lipstick and makeup rebuild like some of those "shows" put forth, but an honest to god no shortcuts taken overhaul of the whole vehicle. Joe, I'm sure it wasn't cheap, but from here it looks like you definitely got your moneys worth. nothings worse than having a expensive adult toy that always has that feel that it's on it's maiden voyage.

I wish you put a modern Toyota V8 in it. The 5.7 or 4.6. The LS triggers me hahaha So does the GM 4 speed. The whole mantra of the Landcruiser is bullet proof reliability, and nothing bout this powertrain is reliable. Great job anyhoo
@glen30-kx5st6 ай бұрын
My sentiment exactly. The Toyota 5.7 and 4.6 are way better than any GM motor. Period. My 4.6 has 212k on it and runs as strong as new with ZERO problems ever.

What a beautiful job. Extraordinarily detailed, and complicated. Jonathon occasionally talks about how much work it was, but wow, 3,000 hours. Remember, that’s time. It does not include the cost of materials. One of my favorite mental exercises with these videos is to imagine a digital dollar odometer inset on the upper left corner. It starts at zero and begins spinning as soon as Jonathon starts talking about details. Normally the 100’s digit becomes a blur. This time the 1,000’s digital was zipping by like pennies on a gas pump. Is it worth the money? Absolutely. Because the boundary of worth and value is entirely subjective. That boundary is driven by pocket depth, and for a significant portion of Jonathons clients, the key word in play is “bottomless”.
