The Tide rolled to an early 17-0 lead but found themselves down late in the 4th period 23-17. Alabama QB Freddie Kitchens held the outcome in his hands. This was Gene Stallings' final Iron Bowl at stake...

I was there. Still got my ticket stub. When Riddle scored I was actually scared the Stadium at Legion Field was going to collapse. You could feel the concrete vibrate and sway, no joke. I have never heard a louder spontaneous outburst of pure noise like I did when Dennis scored. It was something to behold.

I had given up & left for the concession stand/tunnels... I could not bear the loss! Then, I heard the rumbling and realized I had missed seeing the win. In a minute, my (then) husband found me and throwing me all around said, "You can't ever give up on your team, baby!" Great win but sad night (Stalling's departure)! RTR!

A big part of what happened in the 90s was that 4 schools were on probation all at one time: Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama and Kentucky. Alabama wasn't televised prior to this season and couldn't go to a bowl game. I remember visiting family as a kid and wondering why a team could've punished that harshly. Postseason bans I got but it was bogus then for SEC schools to be "shut down" other than attending games in person. Stallings was forced out because he was struggling to compete with the likes of Auburn, Arkansas and Mississippi State. LSU was starting to get a little better but the East was a stronger division. Sad that a great man was forced to retire...he probably was going to soon anyway...and then Alabama had 3 coaches that were a complete disaster. The 3rd of which never actually coached a game at all. I agree that Bryant Stallings and Saban are in a league of their own.

I love Gene Stallings! He will always be my second favorite BAMA coach ever, right after the Bear. Saban is wonderful, and he's accomplished more; but Stallings just carried himself and represented himself in a way that epitomizes everything BAMA stands for. First class man all the way.

I really like Stallings, but he lost control of the program sometime around 1995. The OC and DC hated each other and would not ride in the same elevator, coaches were publicly blaming players for losses and players were publicly blaming coaches -- it was a disgrace. A head coach can, if he chooses, leave all of the play calling and all of the recruiting to others, but the one thing he cannot delegate is uniting all the various elements into a single TEAM.

My dad and Gene Stallings was best friends during the 92 seasons and own up until my dad passed away in 96 and Gene and some of the coaches would come to North Alabama and a small town called Union Grove and go dove hunting pheasant hunting down in a place called Partridge Cove when my dad passed away in 96 Gene came to the funeral in Rainsville my uncle's went up to him was wanting his autograph and talkin about football and I'm telling you Gene Stallings came unglued on them he told them that he ain't here to bury the best friend he ever had and wouldn't talkin know football he was supposed to gave my dad a 92 national championship ring but they was some kind of confusion about it and me and Daddy went down to Tuscaloosa and he told Daddy Daddy didn't have one and he open the drawer of his desk and got out this little box and he opened it up and it had Super Bowl rings in it and told Daddy to pick him on and he picked on put it on and no would just swallow his finger and he asked him about the one he had on and he took it off and handed it to my daddy and he said this is the one I want it was a 1977 Super Bowl ring from the Dallas Cowboys he went on to give all us kids some really cool stuff like a anniversary year football hundred years was made out of elephant skin signed by all the coaches to players and Daniel Moore paintings and give Daddy Bunches of them Gene Stallings is a straight-up good man❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@patslovokia3834 - It's kind of sad. I have seen Legion Field on some "worst stadium" lists on KZbin. Yes, it is old and run down by modern standards but damnit, The Old Gray Lady is a special place that hosted games that are amazing parts of so many people's memories. I have loved her since I was first taken there as a kid, you know, back when Legion was "The big stadium" in Alabama. 😁
