Chase is a rad dude, idk how I found him on Instagram but his car really does capture your attention. It’s so oddball and out of the left field to see this but it makes me want one, it also reminds me of my dads old Taurus. It wasn’t a sho but it’s also one of the first cars I remember riding in as a kid and thinking “man this car is ugly” only to see Chase’s car and have a totally new perspective and love for them. Hopefully down the road I can find a Taurus wagon and do something cool like he has

I could be wrong, but... I don't think there was a single mention of driving impressions. No mention of handling, acceleration, stopping... No sound sample. There was no talk about how its horsepower compared to other cars in its class, other Tauruses, or even the Mustang GT. Nothing. There was no mention of why Ford went all-in on ovals for the '96 Taurus. We just looked at a hideous example of the car for no good reason. "Here's a pink/purple V8 Taurus. Bye!" But we got that stupid water bottle test, which predictably failed. 🙄

And probably why this SHO didn't sell well: the V-8 had to be adapted to the typical front-engine/transverse powertrain layout. This led to it being called an "interference" engine, and its timing belt wasn't good. Sales were also not helped by Ford's decision to not offer a manual transmission with the V-8.

Nice to see a young person getting excited with something we older persons have known all along. There are MANY things that separate the Taurus from the SHO. Besides the bespoke, exotic engine..nearly debadged monochromatic markings..those seats are SPECIFIC to the SHO. The outside has many differences as well, from front to back, right to left that keep it unique from the standard production brethren. The suspension, steering, Z rated tires a big departure as well. (some of these components are made in Germany and shared by BMW cars!) Many know me by now (around the FB GEN 3 group) and by comments to the various videos pertaining to the GEN 3 such as yours here. Having owned a 1997 for nearly 24 years now, you really get to know and understand the TRUE limited production sports sedan class SHO. Each year, (through the four year run) small differences can be found. One of them, the console ashtray and drink holder assembly. In 97, they became totally hidden and pneumatically driven when you push on the 'hidden' door. Very cool stuff. This summer, I was able to get the 'antique' plates and registration, insure it through Hagerty and now taking it to the auto shows once again. It is VERY exciting to see the attention the car is getting now. Back in 2000-03 when I was showing it, there were many that laughed when they saw it, since plenty of standard Taurui were on the road at the time. Now, all these years later, no one is laughing, and it's amazing how many people at the car shows have never seen one in person. Fun times! Thanks for helping in keeping them alive. Been doing that here, since 1999 🙂

I just can't understand why Ford decided to do this. It's absolutely horrendous in anyone's eyes. There is no chance in hell that the designers thought this looked good. I don't hate it anymore simply because of the nostalgia, but damn Ford. Dethroned themselves.

My 2000 Taurus has a 24valve v6 putting out 200hp stock. A lot lighter higher reving motor with no cam or head problems. Cruises at 100 all day. I live in Florida where it rains all the time and I use the car for highway driving so the front wheel drive is a blessing. Best part. Has the shifter on the column. Full front seat for road fun. Lots of cup holders. lol.

Always loved the Taurus (still drive one) and I wish Ford had not gone so crazy on the styling. It worked on the first Taurus but they went a little crazy. If you look at the front end it looks like a "unhappy catfish." But the owner of this 1996 SHO has made it look sharp with the wheels and colors. And a 3.4 V8 stands out in a North American Ford. Too bad all American versions of the Taurus are gone now. Thanks for the information and nice ride.

I can relate bro, my Dad also had a 1996 Taurus he bought used in 1998 when I was 12. wasn't the SHO either , was the next level under the SHO a loaded GL which was better than the base L and LX trims which were cheapend granny models! His was silver metallic with the upscaled bucket seats with a marble cloth which was exclusively to the GL models. It had the center console and same dash setup as your SHO had the better V6 engine too with the Mach Audio system and chrome wheels. I liked this car and it was the car I learned to drive in and got as my first car later on. Held up well for many years he replaced it with a 2010 Ford Fusion SPORT which is basically a baby SHO also in silver metallic with every option. Was bought brand new off showroom floor and it is my car now. It is stored every winter and is still perfect condition. Love the Ford's 👍😎

That radio setup was trash. There wasn't really an inexpensive way to install an aftermarket radio. So what I did. I went to RadioShack got some parts and soldered some writing to the back of the tape deck to allow me to wire an AUX cable in. It worked great and was better than using a tape adapter and was really clear. Also the JBL sub in the back deck was perfect to tapin to, I worked aftermarket subs and amp directly to that. It had almost perfect balance since it was a dedicated baseline.

The V-8 engine under the hood might have been revolutionary by itself, but there were plenty of front-drive cars that had V-8s before: the Oldsmobile Toronado (1966-85), Cadillac Eldorado (since 1967) and Buick Riviera (from 1979-85) were among them. But in the case of the Taurus, the powertrain layout was of a transverse-mounted engine and transmission, which is why some sacrifices had to be done to the 3.4L twin-cam V-8 and thus why I don't believe this iteration of the SHO had sold very well. This engine used the 2.5L Duratec V-6 as its basic blueprint, which explains the 60-degree angle and thus was an "interference" engine, same as Chevrolet's 2.8L, 3.1L and 3.4L V-6 engines, and its timing belt was also not very good.
