This was back when major bowl games felt like big events even if the national championship wasn't at stake. Nowadays except for the Rose Bowl the non-CFP bowls feel like preseason games. This game got almost as high a TV rating as the NFL playoff games that were played the day before.

Footnote: Tom Krug, who played at QB for the Irish after Powlus got hurt late in the year and who played his butt off in this game, is now a judge in Florida.

Florida State fan here! Losing to Florida is never a good thing, but at least we weren't the team getting blown out in the Fiesta Bowl! Also, Pooh Bear Williams was a great talent. Too bad he ate himself out of football! Go Noles!

They didn't plan on it, but the last Orange Bowl in the Orange Bowl was between Florida and Syracuse 3 years later.

From 1993-1995 the two teams played three straight season first at Notre Dame on NBC the year later in Orlando on ABC and this one the Orange Bowl in Miami on CBS

This was perhaps the last truly really good Irish team until the Kelly era. Backup quarterback and they still played FSU to the wire. (And Kelly still hasn't won a big postseason game.)

Agreed. I miss the days of the Orange Bowl actually being in the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl actually being in the Cotton Bowl.

I agree. Although the Orange Bowl was a dump. I was there 1/1/91 to see the Irish lose to Colorado (after a bogus clipping penalty during an Ismail punt return.) At some point Miami was going to need a new (or at least renovated) stadium. But that new stadium sucks. It was built for both the Dolphins and the Marlins, which by definition makes it a lousy stadium.
