I was fortunate enough to have spent some time in Toby Sweet's pool room in NY, back in the early 80's, when I was a traveling salesman. Being a pool junkie, I would jump at the chance to get to watch his practice routine that he would go through starting each day. His practice routine consisted of breaking a straight pool rack and then running 100 balls without missing before quitting. And that was his routine. Although I was only around for about one month to observe his warm up routine, I never saw him miss a ball, not once. I think his straight pool game was as good or better than anyone's at that time. I have never seen anyone control whitey better than him, his cue ball control was flawless. I don't ever remember seeing him play nine ball, although I'm sure he must have to have been a gambler. But I always thought his best game was straight pool. I never played Toby, he was way out of my league, but I played his young protégé, whose name I've since forgotten. He played extremely well, too, (and to whom I donated a few dollars on occasion, which I just considered a cheap lesson). It's a very fond memory I have of meeting, not only some really nice people, and to have been able to hang around with, but Toby is the best player I ever personally knew; and I've known quite a few very good ones in my 60 years around the game, both as a player, and as a table technician and billiard supply store owner.

He may not be as well known as some of the other great players, but that's due to the fact that he was a hustler in his day and he intentionally kept his prowess on the down low, but he ranks up there among the very best; at least in my book he does.

I knew Toby when he lived down here in south Florida. I went to this match even . He wanted me to date his daughter ( Holly ) bc he didn't like the guy she was seeing at the time lol. Unfortunately for me it never happened but she was very beautiful. He taught me a lot about the game . He was a great player and a great person imo.

The touching atmosphere has really been captured in this video for posterity. Invaluable tape, in my opinion. I was not familiar with Toby Sweet, and I'm glad I was able to see this part of pocket billiard history. Mizerak is something else altogether. ​It's sad to see how Mizerak let himself go. He suffered a stroke in 2001 (~5 years after this event) and died in 2006 from "complications during gall bladder surgery" according to google. He was ONLY 61. Take better care of yourselves people! You only get one shot so make it count for as long as you can!

Too bad for the mistake on 7 ball at the end; there was tension and perhaps fatigue in that arm, already felt in two mistakes in previous tables. But Mizerak had been quite unlucky on more that one occasion. It is a beauty to see these legendary players who have made the history of the game (Mizerak the greatest player of the 70 years). It would be great to be able to games from the 70s and 80s too. Green table are better for aesthetics as well as the traditional color of the balls. Thanks!

I really like them talking about alternate paths, and the pluses and minuses of each choice. Five games in now, and forget any "for seniors", these guys are playing great here, negating any age qualifications. So far, one shot that wasn't given proper respect, by Miserak, on the rail first to the upper right corner, that he barely missed...and that's pretty much it. NICE! Nobody could have played that first table any better. An easy table, but perfectly played, just as I almost always DON'T. "I've tried to help him out along the way...teach him what he needs to know" "Yes, you've helped me out a lot, financially" Great ending, really didn't see that coming. THAT was a gift. When you get to a high enough amateur level, paying a pro 10 or twenty bucks for a game, or a short match, is a bargain, just for what you learn.

He was a great player . I knew him well when he lived down here in south Florida but he moved back to NY sometime in the late 90's early 2000's about the time I stopped playing. Never stayed in touch with him though and YES he only wore bell bottoms lol . He loved that style .

Maybe but when someone runs 10 racks of 9 ball on ya see how easy it is to fire back. Those pockets begin to get smaller. Now days you dont see alot of offense running 6 or 7 racks in a row, tables are to tough. makes the game look boring from a fan perspective. I would rather watch people run the set out than play safe. Even though i love playing a great safety.

There were plenty of tables with tight pockets then as well. The players then preferred tighter pockets as well. This was in a local pool room which as you should know, keep the pockets easier for the ball bangers that come in and keep the lights on.

Also most decent pool halls then had one or more "money tables" for the real players to gamble on that had tight pockets

I think the game is easier today. The balls are more reactive, cloth is lightning fast. You had to really have a stroke to play before the 90's. Now you can fart on a ball and send it three rails
