Thanks, Nathan. Watching your video I noticed that the male part of the fuel tank that the locking ring threads on to was a larger diameter than the one on my 98 which is smaller and black rather than white. I had been beating the devil out of the locking ring trying to get it on and finally, thanks to your video, realized that the locating tap on the fuel pump unit was keeping the locking ring from starting. I ground the tab off with a Dremel tool and was then able to get the locking ring to go on. I don't know why my 98 would be that different unless someone had replaced the gas tank with an earlier one. Anyway thanks for putting this on - it helped me solve my locking ring problem.

I caught what you said about idle issues. I have been fighting idle issue on mine for ages now. I really hope replacing the fuel pump helps! Thanks for the video! A note for the unwary...there are 2 types of fuel pumps...with Evaporative Fuel Loss System and WITHOUT. The difference is the vacuum line on the top of the fuel pump. If you are replacing the whole assembly, have a look at your truck before you order the wrong one.

Agreed! I am on my 3rd '97 Disco and I really like that I can do a lot of the work myself. They are tough! I had the main idler pulley on the serpentine belt fall off and take off into the ditch one day. I just kept driving and the belt just ran on the pulley shaft. New pulley assembly took 20 minutes max to change.

Could I trouble you for the source for the pump or for the specific pump specs? If one searched "defender 90 fuel pump," usually the entire (expensive) unit with housing comes up.

Nice video. I need to do this job on my 98 Disco 1 to get rid of the in-line pump the previous owner added instead for replacing the in-tank pump, so it is nice to see ahead of time what I will need to do. However, did I hear you say use a vacuum cleaner to clean out the gas tank? You should know that a shop vac (which someone might likely use) has a motor with brushes and sparks and could blow up big time if it sucks up gas fumes. Not a good idea. Better to wipe it out manually with a rag if it is dirty, assuming one can reach the bottom of the tank through the hole. Thanks for all the other tips, though. Very helpful.

Hey there. Just fixed a disconnected wire in the float but now the car won’t start. It turns on but not starting. Any suggestions after getting pump back in if theres another step I need to take? (Pump the gas or something like that?) my final ring is not on because I wanted to see if it worked before locking it down.

The old wire you've removed had a protective cap over the negative terminal , but the replacement doesn't. Won't it be danger to place the two terminals next to each other without a cover?

Not really. But you can use some electrical tape over it.

Hi Nathan, I took out the old pump, but I cant fit the new one. I saw on your movie that you probably had same problem, but this part of the installation is cut. What is the hint? is this the rubber ring that should go inside, but it is preventing the pump lid to stick closely to the plastic slot?

I have a 1998, that just turned off on me last night. As i click the key foward, no fuel comes out of that shrader valve. not even a tad bit. I had been noticing loss in performance, and she had been for a couple of months been turning off on me. I always thought it was the crank sensor, or other of the sort. i have had the truck for about 6 years, and have only needed to replace the alternator, and battery. i think its time to get her a fuel pump. All fuses have been checked. now, question is, do i buy the whole assembly, or just the little pump motor you got?

@@blacksquirrel4008 depending on the model, but usually hard dash models you'll find the fuse under the front passenger seat there's a small rectangular box with fuses. It's one of them, fuse number might differ according to market specs.
