1997 Maybach Concept Car

At the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz presented a highly distinguished new concept vehicle, the chauffeur-driven Maybach limousine. The Maybach offered the fullest and most exclusive possible range of in-car amenities including a reclining seat and a state-of-the-art rear-seat entertainment and communication system. The engineering too was of the very highest standard, including features such as electronically controlled adaptive headlamps or a V12 6.0 liter engine with automatic cylinder cut-out.
The Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept was enthusiastically received by the public, ensuring that this model too was able to move forward to volume production. The first hand-finished models left the Maybach manufacturing facility in Sindelfingen in 2002. Their radiator grille was graced not by a Mercedes star but by the Maybach "double M" insignia, Mercedes-Benz having decided to revive the renowned name as a brand in its own right.

The Maybach name isn’t appreciated the same way as Rolls-Royce. It started out as a custom coach build company long before 2002 when the 57 and 62 models were introduced. I remember seeing a 2004 Maybach 62 pulling out of a parking space on Wall Street in NYC and thinking about how massive it was in length. It was the first time I saw a Maybach in person and it was just stunning in purple and gray paint. The current Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4MATIC and S 650 are very nice, but they lack the bespoke styling of the 2003 - 2013 Maybach 57 and 62 models.

I might be wrong here so I'm apologizing if any I write is wrong Maybach is an old company that shares big part of their history with Mercedes - Benz, in fact their history goes back to 1900s when Germany's first auto producers were settling down. Although first was Benz (Currently Mercedes - Benz) Mercedes and Maybach were settling amongst the first as well, during war times they shared many things such as projects, shares, products and alike however after the end of WW2, Maybach was shut to prevent Germany from having too many companies and such and in 2002 Mercedes bought Maybachs remaining shares and acquired the brand as a whole however after 2013 when Maybach sales were tanking Mercedes announced that it'd be kept as a trim level just like Mulsanne to Bentley. Both Mulsanne and Maybach are old coach building companies (Maybach also used to produce military vehicles and alike in the old days)

Random fact: Mercedes initially considered developing a 9 Liter V16 engine for the Maybach but the idea was dropped in favour of giving the M275 engine that was released in 2002 in the S-Class a slight power boost and name it M285. Rated at 550 PS and 900 NM, its output was comparable to what the figures of a n/a 9 Liter V16 would have been.
