The Saab 9000, the big, safe, comfy Swedish executive car, how good is a 32,000 mile example today?

Stunning. BTW, once you've owned a Saab it's VERY difficult to go for anything else. Hard to put your finger on it. Also, the 0-60 wasn't their strong point, so to speak. Saab (ever thoughtful) gave you better mid-range, as they felt power is better used when you want to overtake stuff.

@@amigachris I owned a MkIII Cavalier SRi (with the red top engine) I've also owned a 2nd generation Saab 900, currently own a 9-3 on the same platform and a 95. The Saabs (especially the first two) feel VERY different to my old cavalier (which I loved). They might share a few components, but that's it.

I had a 95 .Loved it . Did a lot of miles and no problems at all. Only thing was depreciation ,which was savage . BMW sales bloke told me that ,when they saw a Saab coming onto the garage forecourt, they all tried to hide to avoid telling the owner just what it was worth ! But good for the second owners !

Had a 1998 CSE anniversary 2.0 eco turbo auto in amethyst. Possibly the best car I've ever owned, cost me £1,050 and I ran it for five years. All it ever needed was an ignition module, fifty quid from eBay, fitted in ten minutes. Never felt safer in a car than in that thing, though the economy wasn't great. Booting it into kick down you could get the mpg-ometer down to 6mpg. And it had the most comfortable seats of any car ever, before or since. Had a 9-3 convertible afterwards, absolute pile of toot by comparison.

I have had a few 9000’s in years gone by and absolutely loved them. Super reliable, comfortable and safe. My favorite was a 3 liter V6 Griffin. It did suffer from the typical Saab supplied warping plastic rocker covers but easy fix is get a metal set from a Vauxhall Vectra 2.5 V6 which cures that so no leaking oil on the exhaust manifolds.

My first Saab was a 9000 saloon. It was initially the strangest, and then quickly became the best car I had owned. There followed a series of automatic 9-5 saloons, all with the 2.3 engines. Whenever I changed to different make, I would always return to Saab, wearing a big grin on my face. Smooth, supremely reliable and stylish... Get one.

I had an old and battered 5-door 1986 9000i from 2000 - 2004. The steering on it was so precise that I could cruise down A-roads at 50 mph with just one thumb at the 6 O'Clock position on the steering wheel, and the leather seats were so comfortable that I once was able to do a non-stop seven-hour stint from Stockholm to Helsingborg. A Latvian relative had a 9000 turbo around 2010. Once, it was parked outside in -25 Centigrade for a fortnight. When we went to pick it up, first we had to pry the back door open and climb over the seats to the front to start it. But it started at the first turn of the key. Then we had to climb back out and remove two feet of snow and ice while the car warmed up in idle so we could open the side doors. After 15 minutes of digging and scraping we were back on the road. I then got my next Saab in 2017, a black 2004 9-3 sedan with turbo and beige leather seats. It's a nice car, and it looks really, really great. Since it's well-polished and always clean inside, it often gets praised, even by non-Saab owners. But it's not a 9000, it's just not. So I have started looking for a 9000 in good condition. There was a ten-year anniversary model up for sale a few weeks ago, but I was only second in line, and the b*stards ahead of me bought it.

This was a nice reminder of the 93 9000cs I had back in the day....it was exactly the same model non turbo manual. The ride was so smooth and comfortable.....it was a beautiful car for road trips. One quirk I loved in the car was the light under the hood.....not many cars have a light for the engine bay! It was expensive to repair and i was always concerned how much the next service would be lol. Great review.

5:00 The 9000 never had stability control. It did have traction control offered on some models. I have a '95 CDE with 2.3 turbo and automatic. I've installed full Aero interior, led lighting and some performance upgrades. edit: I have to say though, that the 9000 has aged rather well. Even the latest models are now 20+ years old but they are still fine cars on the road.

I sent a comment a year ago and was re-watching it today and heard you say that Giorgetto Giugiaro was the designer - well yes he was but only in part I understand? My understanding was when the Saab 9000 first appeared in the late 80s it had the central body tub design you see here, but with a more angular/straight up and down front and rear end, designed by Saab's Björn Envall. Giugiaro was given the job to update the car with minimal cost post early 90s? Which resulted in a new front and rear end design seen on the 9000 in your vid to end of production. I feel this was a happy marriage and resulted in a better looking car, one of the great Saabs, particularly in AERO manual form.

My old 9000 CSE Turbo has finally just run out of road. It was the sixth Saab I owned (I started with a 99, then had a 900 followed by another, then three 9000's). It had covered 240,000 miles, and had a replacement 2.3 litre engine put in a few years ago, as the original 2.0 litre one had developed a problem where it sounded like a load of knives and forks going around in a washing machine. Not good. I loved it, even though it broke down on me quite a lot. What finally made me to decide it was time to let it go was both the front doors developing a fault so they could only be opened from the outside (and the parts I needed to fix that seem non-existent these days), the fact that I had to bang the dash to get the dash panel to light up, and the final couple of tricks it played on me. I came out of work one morning, got in the car, tried to start it, and found the battery was completely flat - not even a click when I turned the key. I phoned a mechanic mate of mine, and he said it sounded like the battery, which was knocking on, had shorted out and died. As luck would have it, Halfords was just around the corner, so I bought 103 quid's worth of new battery, fitted it, tried it, and it started first time, so I took the old one back to them to dispose of. Then I drove home, parked up, and when I got out I noticed the the brake lighst were still on. A quick stamp on the brake pedal solved that, and I realised they must've run the battery down while I was at work, and I'd got rid of a perfectly good battery. The next morning, when I got in it, it started ok, but the slave cylinder had gone on the clutch, and I couldn't even get it in gear. That was enough for me.

They are lovely cars the 9000! Never knew they were offered without a turbo. The interior of the Aero model is a real delight, with those 'winged' front leather seats, so incredibly supportive and the wooden dash, door cappings and centre console if fitted as it was an option. Most Aero's just had the wooden dash, though I've seen one without. Built to last they were.

I learned how to drive in the SAAB 9-5, 2006, Vector tdi. Great car, it has flaws as the rust protection is not the best during its later years. It has also broken down quite a lot, having to change basically everything you ought to change in a car. Only thing we have not had any issues with is the stock turbo, but even with its flaws. I think it is the best car I have ever driven, controllable, fuel efficient, superb safety compared to the competition, great handling, great fun and great accessories such as the radio, speakers and etc. It has gone over 30k Swedish miles and the biggest issue with the car is the god damn gearbox, second- and fourth gear has some issues. They tend to slip out or grind if you do not know how to operate it, it is almost as some kung-fu move required to get the gears in position. I took it on a two-week road trip through Sweden and driving this car around the mountains was pure bliss. You felt nothing except the acceleration and you'd hear the turbo's whistle as you'd ride down a 20km straight tarmac road, it was as you said, light on the road in an unexplainable manner. Wish I could get my hands on the latest 9-3 or 9-5, or a 900-series.

I had experiences of 9000s as a kid. My real car nerd magazine stage started a couplenof years later but I remember the first time I went cinema was in 1993 to see Home Alone 2. Mates dad at the time had a midnight blue 9000 saloon. It felt premium with its beige velour seats. My uncle had a new Scorpio a top one the time as his company car and it was the only decentish car Id ridden in until then. My experience if the the Saab felt unique and even at 8 years old I could detect it as premium. Id never really heard of them but I knew what a Scorpio was and the Saab just felt expensive. Then another mates Dad had a top of the line red one with spoiler a hatch aero all leathered up which was a beast L reg in 94 with the 3 spoke wheels and I used to get a lift in that from time to time. Lovely cars.

I'm lucky enough to own a 9000 Aero - the top-of-the-range turbo charged one, and it is AWESOME! Driven gently, it is capable of turning in well over 40mpg on a run (I've seen 46mpg!), yet I've blown off a Porsche Boxster in a straight drag race, and left a lot of very puzzled BMWs and Audis in my wake! Mind you, it won't do 40 mpg if you do that too much! Mine's done 214,000 miles, and drives like a new car. It doesn't burn any oil, and everything still works as it should. The seats don't feel all that great at first - comfy, but nothing to write home about. But drive it for three or four hundred miles, and you suddenly realise that you don't have dead legs or a numb bum or aching shoulders! Everything is at your fingertips, without having to stretch or reach for it. Any downsides? Well, the lack of traction control means you need a delicate right foot from a standing start if you are trying for a quick getaway! Forget just flooring it, you will get terminal wheelspin! And yes, there is some turbo lag, but its not excessive. And when the turbo kicks in, it just feels as if a giant hand has got hold of you and hurled you at the horizon! The best car I've ever owned, bar none! And I've owned a few! Nothing on the market today even comes close.

I sold these new and this one had 2 options the Le Mans Blue Metallic paint and the 3 spoke asymmetric Alloy Wheels (expensive) although these may have been added at a later date.

Testing a basic car was an interesting alternative to the usual rants about high performance turbo versions. I specialise in saab spares (forgive the punt steve lewis saab) so I feel I can justifiably comment on the video. The basic versions definitely give good bang for the £ and the 9000 and classic 900 offer classic motoring for reasonable money whilst putting you in what would still rank as one of the safest cars ever produced. I have a collection of photos of severely wrecked cars where the occupants walked away to demonstrate this. The 9000 in particular will put up with a shed load of abuse and still get you home. I once bought a cse for £150 and drove it home (illegally at the time) with a dodgy alternator in the rain and at night and the car still hung together. Changed the alternator and bunged it for an MOT and it passed except for a rear reg number tail light. I'd recommend a basic 900 classic .. it will be very different and I can give you a shed load of design cues that would be worthy of note in a video.

Good comment mate. We provided this little gem for this video and the car was sold about a month later. A basic 900 would also be a good follow up. I'm pretty sure that Jamie @ 2 stroke would be happy to support with an appropriate vehicle.

My first car at 25 years was the same Saab as this but dark grey 2ltr but leather seats an better spec We were involved in a crash an went into a lamp post my wife an two kids 6 an 1 years old totally unharmed so I brought a 9000 aero which went like shit off a shovel. I now drive a C70 T5 Volvo so still keeping the fast Swedish dream alive but now with the roof down. Sigma males love Saabs and volvos

I always wanted a Saab 9000 Turbo, but when I looked at buying a £1500 'flat-front' one when I was 26 years old in 2003, I discovered that the insurance premium was £2000 fully comp. No thanks. I bought a Volvo 740 estate instead... I finally bought a Saab in 2015, albeit a 9-5 SE estate. I now have a 2000 9-5 Aero HOT estate, which is simply awesome.

There's a point to the 2.0L engine, it draws less fuel than the bigger 2.3L and especially turbos. Although I don't understand why you'd get one without AC.
