I currently own three SAABs with over 400,000 cumulative miles. A 2002 9-5 Aero sedan, 2003 9-5 Aero Wagon, and a 2006 9-3 Aero Convertible. So far these cars have only required normal preventative servicing and parts replacement for worn items such as brakes and bushings. In all these years of ownership, not once have any of these cars left me standing by the road side waiting for a tow truck. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you and Cheers.

Worked for the Vauxhall V6 engine plant which supplied the 3.0 v6 for the 9000, 2.5v6 for the 900 and 3.0 V6 turbo for the 95. Spent a lot of time in Trollhattan great place great people. Every car that came off the production line was driven around the plants banked test track at speeds of over 100 mph then inspected. I remember Vauxhall introduced all service items ie oil cap, dipstick and so on were all coloured yellow, Saab complained that the dipstick was a slightly different shade of yellow! Another time I went to their design center to listen to what they refered to as Phantom Knock, an intermittent tap only at idle with no load (in park or N) I couldn't hear it, they told me you could only hear it if you got on your knees by the offside wheel, we did come up with a solution to this which didn't include turning the radio up

Touch screen with Nav, vented seats, bi-xenon headlights, rain sensing wipers, paddle shifters and sport mode. The car is ridiculously quick (40-60 mph and 60-80 mph in 2.6 seconds as measured by the ecu), good on gas for cruising, comfortable and fairly quiet. Thanks for the review, solid channel, excellent car and an epic job covering the car. I’ve owned 2 9-5’s myself, so a little story time if you’re interested. First car and 9-5 was a 2001 2.3T SE manual Saloon with Aero exterior, 280 bhp (not original trust me) fully loaded with tan interior, ventilated front seats etc. That car was a blast! Went like hell on wheels but sadly the engine gave up due to poor maintenance (timing chain tensioner failed meaning it jumped a few teeth and shortly after oil pressure dropped meaning the engine seized on me covering it in a cloud of smoke) Second car was a 99 9-5 Aero estate(one of the very first ever made) It had everything possible to option brand new including the Harmann Kardon stereo, sunroof, engine warmer etc etc. The heater could melt about everything and ice went off with ease even with a cold car in -15 degrees. Oil changes and services done every 10000km’s, same auto box as the one you tested, and my god that was the best car I’ve ever owned. Sadly it had issues, bad turbo, vaccume hoses were shot, dampers and brakes all around. Got around to fix most of the items, until my wallet ran dry and had to sell it. I’ll never forget the day that I drove it home, dark metallic blue, felt like riding on a sky on the horrid Norwegian winter roads. I’ve never cried upon selling a car, but I did when seeing that go out of my driveway. I’m now the owner of an A3 1,8 TFSI 2014 MY, but as that’s getting sold, getting my hands on a 9-5 again is just the ideal choice. The car feels like home, and I’ve missed it ever since.

In 2010 I bought a 9-5 2.3T for £1600. 72,000 miles in immaculate condition. The seller bought it at auction but he didn't know it needed a repair, he thought it had gearbox problem and wanted rid. Knowing Saab 9-5 I knew it was a defective DI cassette causing unpredictable jerking of the car through misfiring. On changing the cassette the car was transformed and it's performance was way better than my previous 9-5's. A little digging into its past revealed it was ex-police and had been through the police special vehicle operations team. I kept the car for 3 years selling it with 135,000 miles. Other than the normal service items nothing was needed and I drive my cars hard but I always look after them and change the oil more frequently than the advised service. I have great stories of some high speed long distance runs and being taken on by what are called exotic cars, people think I'm making them up! On selling my ex-police 9-5 I bought an E series Mercedes which was another bargain price car. I'd always liked the look of the E series but for me it's not as good as the Saab as its too heavy and really costly to keep on the road. If I can find a low mile 2004/5 Saab 9-5 I might be tempted to have another.

It changes the turbo and fuel delivery maps to about the same as the HOT version, a good tuner won't push it past the safe limits for the engine and these are well made. I did 100,000 miles in a remapped Alfa with no ill effects
@Alexandr_Silver5 жыл бұрын
@@furiousdriving How did the remap influence fuel consumption?
@notroll12795 жыл бұрын
@@furiousdriving Thank you! But is the difference between the 185 HP and the HOT versions (which went up to 250 HP) as sold by SAAB really entirely within the software? Didn't they make changes to the whole power train (from pistons to the transmissions) and the remaining car (esp. brakes and suspension) to cope?

I was excited to get a 9-5 as it seemed like great value and looked wonderful, but after a few test drives, one thing that ended up putting me off was the terrible brakes. At first I thought it was just poor maintenance but every one of them had uneven and weak brakes. I really wanted to love it, but after an old 5 series, the brakes and steering just seemed subpar.
@andrewlaw5 жыл бұрын
You just needed to fit Goodrich stainless lines for a better pedal feel. You get used to the Saab pedal feel, it takes more of a push to get a reaction. Citröen brakes are the opposite, my C5's would stand on their nose with the slightest of pushes.

Since making this comment, I actually went and bought a 2006 9-5, fool that I am. I think it was a question of finding a low-mile one that wasn’t run into the ground, which I had almost given up on. For $3000 needing only a few items addressed, it seems like a worthy purchase!

Problem is with Saab, apart from their relationship with GM , is that they had a very limited model range compared to any of the Germans. Even Volvo had a more diverse range than Saab, who basically soldiered on with 9-3 and only slightly bigger 9-5 for years. So instead of having a hypothetical 9-1, 9-2 and so forth to rival Audi, they failed to market their cars in an ever changing world.....

Top tips for this age Saab. Only use Synthetic oil.. Clean the strainer in the sump ... And upgrade the PCV crankcase ventilation system... I tried a 05 Vector for a year and could not wait to get back to a 01 Aero. It was like driving a brick in comparison... BTW Yours appears to have a faulty EML :) :)

I have just bought a 2001 SAAB 9-5 SE for £650, i bought it off a well know auction web site and wondering what i had bought as you hear some horror stories, i picked it up from the seller at a dismantlers yard... yes yes i know what your thinking ... i did too at the time. It was filthy with moss growing in the gutters on the roof and most of the rubber window seal and around the light washer wipers was green. I sat in it and almost at once i said ..."my goodness how comfy the seat is" so with baited breath i put the key in the ignition....after fumbling around the steering Colum first...! foot on the brake and turned the key. It fired up straight away with the lights on the dash and pinging sound attacking my senses. I put my seat belt on ,put it in "D" and with trepidation i took my foot off the brake peddle and away i went on the 12 miles journey home. As i pulled on to the drive got out, my neighbour who took me to pickup the car could see the huge smile on my face as i got out of the car. Why oh why had i never thought of a SAAB before..? the ride home was amazing .... the thrill of the turbo as it kicked in when i pushed the peddle mad my nether regions tingle. The car has history from day one , with one owner all it's life and thousands spent to keep it on the road. Even up to February this year it had over £700 spent on it. So as now i am the second owner of this wonderful piece of Swedish engineering i am smitten . After replacing a couple of breather hoses ,an oil change and a good scrub later it's better than my old S-type Jag, there are a few little bits to get this car looking mint.. but those will have to wait for the better weather. I have watched many of your videos and i felt i had to tell you my short SAAB journey to happiness after watching this video. Cheers...!

Entertaining vid as always. I've got a 9-3 1.9TiD on an 07 plate, and I'm a proper Saab convert, I love em. Only wish I'd bought the wagon though, but I'm currently on the hunt for one, or a nice 9-5 Aero wagon. I don't mind diesel or petrol, but preferably around the 100k mark. I've had my 9-3 for 4.5 years now, and it has never failed an MOT. Advisory for a slight leak from the steering rack, but that's all. Oh and it has a minor chip in the windscreen on the passenger side, so not even an advisory. It has 95k on the clock now, and has honestly never let me down. So if anybody is interested, I'll be selling her soon. I'm looking for a grand ono, MOT expires Jan 2020. But it should go through again with nothing more than 1or2 advisories, if that. Certainly nothing major wrong with it, and its got a great 6spd auto box with semi auto, cruise, and thumb paddle shifters on the wheel. It is the 150bhp 16v variant, not the under powered 120 version, so it has plenty enough torque. So if anybody is interested, I also live in Kent, hit me up. Oh, and cam belt and water pump was done at around 84k if memory serves me right. Intervals on these is 90k, so it was done before it was due. So it should be good for at least another 60-70k before it is due again.

I had a 2001 9-5 Aero Estate many years ago. It was a fun car, but it had its flaws. I think I changed everything in the front suspension, but it was still clunky. I had to do a major engine service with changing the timing chain and upgrade the oil return pipes to avoid sludge and blocked oil channels, and the ABS module failed, so I had to get that refurbished. Fuel economy was worse than a Chevy van I had about the same time... But did I love the Saab? Sure! It might be worth mentioning that I had two 9000 Turbos prior to the 9-5. What do I drive now? You commented on a MK3 Mondeo in this video. I drive a MK4 Mondeo 2.2 tdci Tit S, and frankly, it's a better car than the 9-5 ever was in almost every way. :)

I had a 98 S reg Saab 9-3 2.0 s and I have to say it was one of the best cars I've owned. As for the mk3 Mondeo, I had a 2006 2.0 lx auto and that rates as probably the worst car I've owned with a number of breakdowns and problems in 3 years of ownership. So going on the fact that your Mondeo was also less than reliable my advice would be don't buy another Mondeo instead if you do decide to buy another to add to your fleet make it a Saab, they're well built, generally more reliable and far more interesting.
