With the Nintendo 64 out by the end of 1996, all the major players of the video game industry had their new consoles out and the real battle of the console wars began. For Sony and the Playstation, it led to a year full of extraordinary releases.

It‘s great that you mention Command and Conquer. It was HUGE at the time and many people could not yet afford a full fledged multimedia PC in ’97. It was an amazing port with better quality FMV, including an expansion and easily beating the DOS version in every way. It lead the leaderbords for many months that year switching places with Tomb Raider.

Can’t wait until he talks about silent hill, RE 2 & 3, Metal Gear Solid, Dino Crisis 1&2, clock tower along with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1&2 all on the PS1. The PS1 freaking ruled the late 90s. Yet the N64 gave us goldeneye 007, The legend of Zelda OOT & MM, Banjo-kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Tooei, WWF No Mercy, WCW/no Revenge & World Tour!

Quick fact check - Wild ARMs was not the first RPG Sony published outside of Japan. A year prior in 1996, they published Beyond the Beyond in North America, which was kind of them testing the waters to see if gamers were interested. They were also planning to translate Arc the Lad as well around the same time, but that plan fell through, and the series would not see a US release until the early 2000s when Working Designs brought the entire series to North America in a collection box.

Final Fantasy VII was a straight up phenomenon. The closest my best friend had gotten to an RPG before that had been Link to the Past, but he fell hook, line, and sinker for FFVII.

Another problem with cartridges are that they require lead times of a few months to make a new batch of copies. Nintendo, who handled manufacturing game paks for themselves and their third parties, couldn't just churn out more copies of a popular N64 game once it sells out. They need the mask ROMs containing the software to make game paks, and getting ROMs made by a semiconductor fab is a time-consuming process. A batch of Compact Discs, on the other hand, can have lead times of about a day or two. If you run out of copies of a popular PlayStation game, stock was usually replenished within a week since optical disc replication is a rapid process.

One correction - Mega Man X4 launched simultaneously on the Sega Saturn and Playstation (except in Europe). In fact, it was developed as a Sega Saturn exclusive originally before being ported to the Playstation, similar to Tomb Raider. It also released on PC 2 years later

I don’t feel final fantasy did it on its own. It was the combination of Metal gear,ff7,gran turismo, tekken 3,resident evil 2, tomb raider 2 Then sprinkle ea sports Nfl,nba, mlb, nhl, fifa Smooth on Silent hill, ace combat ,crash bandicoot, doom, medal of honor, Syphon filter, twitsted metal, street fighter, mortal kombat, dino crisis, parasite eve, Most of the Games you can only play if you own a playstation . They out gamed sega with their own blueprints. Make it easy and cheap for developers and let them bring everything and express their ideas without constraints. Advertise and market like crazy And innovate without losing focus and going overboard . Out did Nintendo on the controller. Saw two analogs sticks instead of the buttons for camera controlling and rumble built in instead of in a pack And sprinkle in crash bandicoot fo

I’m Japan we’re Saturn was proper PS was at a dead heat Sega. Sony’s analog came later on in consoles cycle and really didn’t matter when it came to the N64. It was a great console because it permitted unlimited development from third party’s because they didn’t have a Mario or Sonic to fall on. Kanomi made around 4x the titles on PS than they did on N64 (though I enjoyed 3d Castlevania etc)

I think Playstation published Wild Arms cause the devs used 3D Polygons during the battle scenes., people can´t realize it now, but just like FMV and CGI based sprites were a big impactful thing on the sega CD or 3DO or PC CD-Rom, 3D Polygons were so impactful that made FMV and the Sprites like saw in Donkey Kong Country to look old., so i understand Playstation America´s approach, 3D graphics were just a more agressive way to market the product, in comparison to relative older tech that was known everywhere

Nintendo 64 was a good console but their unwillingness to switch to CD Disk really bite them in the behind when their established publishers switch to the PlayStation's powerful system, with Final Fantasy 7 becoming a huge success.

Sony had many rebuys due to hardware issues N64s didn’t crash. N64 top sellers as same numbers as Sony’s. Most Sony games didn’t outsell Mario Kart. Staying cart didn’t hurt really. No loading, great games.

The N64 was not really a thing to me, it may as well have flopped as the Saturn and PlayStation are what I and all my friends had. I still remember the Christmas I got FF 7 and Castlevania, good times....except those early PS1 suffered from bad hardware and most need to be tuned on its side to stop skipping during FMV, look Sony replaced these defective consoles under warranty.

Great work! I wonder how much of an influence the ease of piracy on the system was on sales. Curious. Unpopular opinion: The dual analog/shock design is not comfortable and should not have made it to the ps2. It causes the tendons on your hands to be stretched in an comfortable way for long sessions, is imprecise, and doesn’t allow your hands to fully grip the controller… there I said it. Come at me internet.

They fucked Sony over by going with Phillips behind their back. They made Sony believe that they were still working alongside them, only to then announce a day later at CES that they were working with Phillips a day after Sony had basically publicly embarrassed themselves by unvailing the Nintendo Playstation. Nintendo got what they deserved in the end.
